Even after the horrific slayings of schoolchildren in Connecticut in December, it was probably inevitable that an effort to ban military-style assault weapons would come to naught.
There was widespread skepticism that the ban would do much good, especially since so many of these guns already are on the streets and in homes. There was no Republican support, and even red state Democrats were reluctant to back the measure.
We still think there is value in sending a message that assault weapons and extended magazines are dangerous and unnecessary, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has to count votes and made a wise decision this week to focus on the possible.
Now his goal is to pass bipartisan legislation to make gun trafficking a federal crime, boost funding for school security and toughen the background check program. We'd also like to see a ban on the sale of ammunition on the Internet.

"Dangerous and unnecessary" - People who would rob us of our freedom.
***Makes you wonder why they want to take away our assault rifles so badly...***
It is so they can get a foot in the door for a Federal Gun ban. Handguns are their REAL target, and AWs are just a target of opportunity, a place to begin.
Classic “constrained” vs “unconstrained” vision.
One woman was assuming a “constrained” worldview where man is sinful and not perfectible.
The other is assuming an “unconstrained” worldview in which man is perfectible if we just set up the right environment.
Until the two address their base assumptions, OR EVEN RECOGNIZE THAT THEY HAVE THEM,
they’ll just get frustrated in their discussion.
yea the pro gun woman just raised her arms up and gave up, the anti gun woman who could not understand real life just kept repeating the same mantra of men should be tld not to attack and then women don;t need guns.
Am I the only one who has heard left wing folk talk and they sound like little kids but when you hear conservatives they sound like grown ups.
Oh and how any one can even talk to Colmes or beckel is beyond me as it;s so obvious that they do nothing but lie
Seems simple to me, but then again, I understand the “problem” that the unconstrained woman had.
I’d simply ask - “do you really believe that rapists will stop raping, 100% guaranteed, if you tell them not to?”
One of the reasons is to establish dominance. They want to establish the fact that they are in charge and you can do nothing about it.
Stopping these insane bans are the equivalent of punching the school bully in the face.
