Flour Bluff (TX) Parent Upset Over Lesson on Terrorism & Government (CSCOPE Curriculum)

CORPUS CHRISTI -- Many parents check their children's school work to make sure they're getting good grades, but how often to you check the content of those lessons? One mother of a child in Flour Bluff ISD says when she did, she was shocked that lesson taught her son to blame the United States for the 9/11 attacks.

Kara Sands posted the test on her facebook page and it began to spread like wildfire. The test covers content watched on a video in class. What bothered her most is question #3 on the test. It asks why the U.S. may be a target for terrorism. Her son chose the correct answer - 'decisions we made in the United States that negatively impact people elsewhere.'

"I'm not going to justify radical terrorists by saying we did anything to deserve that, over 3,000 people died," Sands said. She contacted her son's principal and teacher, both met with her and contacted the video's distributor, Safari Montage.

Representatives say they stand behind the video, but have already changed the corresponding quiz that may have caused confusion.

Sands tells us the quiz opened her eyes to the content in lessons taught at the school. Her biggest concern is curriculum called CSCOPE.

One worksheet on the Bill of Rights names food and medicine as rights, not personal responsibility. "He got marked wrong, because it is, it is our responsibility for shelter, its our responsibility for food for medicine, its not the government's responsibility," Sand said.

Flour Bluff officials say Sands is the only parent to complain about the test specifically, but her post on facebook now has 1,662 likes.

Several parents plan to meet next week and Sands says school board members Shirley Thornton and Wade Chapman have requested the concerns be brought up in the next school board meeting. The agenda for the March 28th meeting is not yet posted to confirm the item.

Sands says parents need to get involved.

"When I teach my children that you have to work hard and you have to earn a living and they go to school and learn something different I absolutely take issue with that," Sands said.

The predatory whores that draft and authorize this pro-terror propaganda deserve exposure.

Some things are not worth fixing.

************

Agree but I think this system can be usable without trashing the money already invested. Clean it up, learn from the past, install the proper oversight and move forward.

Who the hell is going to come up with the text books, approve the content, fund the efforts, and what are you going to do in the next five years while all that is being developed?

Dan Patrick is a conservative and if he’s seeing a postive then I’ll trust his opinion.

snip from the article I linked above:

Senator Dan Patrick agreed, “I’m glad the CSCOPE Board realizes that immediate and long term changes must be made to address the serious issues raised by our committee, parents, and teachers. Our committee will be monitoring the situation closely to ensure they follow through with their commitments. We will also be looking at legislation to ensure these changes cannot be reversed in the future and that the SBOE continues in their role of oversight of CSCOPE content. The future of the program will depend on CSCOPE keeping the commitments they have made and gaining the trust of the legislature, teachers, and parents.

end snip

He isn't using it.

Run, run, run, as fast as you can! Cscope is an unholy mess. My district forced us to use it for 3 six weeks until we finally revolted. Now it's supplemental. They spent a fortune on this junk, and we've been receiving it from ESC experts just days after it is written. It's full of mistakes and seems to have been written by people who have no concept of how to differentiate curriculum. I teach lots of students who are LEP, and it seems like there has been no regard for them in cscope. It's a one size fits all disaster. If you can avoid it, DO!

Our school district has purchased the C-Scope curriculum. My daughter is an A honor roll student. She has been coming to me for explanations for 7th grade math. Some of the word problems that I have looked at have the potential for two answers depending on your interpretation. My daughter's teacher is working the problems for each interpretation. You can not have 2 answers for 1 problem. The teacher is seemingly having to work the problems for an answer. The kids are telling her their answers while she is working them on the board the next day after the homework and she gets short with them stating that she doesn't know the answer, she has to work for the answer. The teacher makes the kids take notes for home work and then takes up the notes at the end of the day. The kids have no workbooks for examples. I corresponded with the teacher and superintendent about the lack of workbooks. The super stated that he would get me access to the online C-Scope curriculum. I haven't gained access yet. I beleive Atl ISD is using this as a stand alone curriculum. Is this C-Scope a joke or what?!?!?!?

This “system” sucks.

***********

Didn’t say it didn’t. But you don’t always throw the baby out with the water when you can make the necessary revisions to fix the problem. Senator Patrick seems to feel that way at the present time.

Different states use different approaches...

No textbooks is a disaster. Read post 43. There’s more at the link in 35. Ditch this mess!

Texas will handle it as they see fit. Hope all is well with your schools.

"Attempting to fix it is like trying to make a Tiger into a house cat after it ate its last three owners."

LOL! From what I am learning, I tend to agree.

Eye-opening notes from the Texas Senate hearing held 1/31/13.

The Similarities Between CSCOPE and Common Core

Seven years! Shocking that more Texas school teachers did not speak out. Oh wait, that would have been a crime!

"CSCOPE is clearly created and managed by a group of highly untrustworthy people who will not change." --- from your comment in post 36.

I haven't found any comments by Gov Perry on CSCOPE???

In my schools, they quit teaching English at the 4th grade. No verbs, nouns, adverbs. No wonder our young people are a mess.

My 2nd kid stood up and told a teacher that what she just said was incorrect. He then hauled out a science book that he'd gotten at the library and proved it.

My children were not popular. lol

Dan Patrick appears to be hard working... at least HE says so. However, he is often willing to compromise too much for my taste. Just a little too conciliatory. The longer he remains in Austin the more conciliatory he seems to become.

I’m not one who says that if Dan Patrick says it is good it must be good. I don’t trust him or anyone else that much.

Just my opinion and you are welcome to yours which I don’t share.

Kara Sands, the woman who is leading the protests against the CSCOPE social studies lessons, lives in Rep. Todd Hunter's (TXH-32) district. He is the chairman of the calendar committee. He has quite a bit of power to make CSCOPE reform a high priority. Furthermore Kara is a long time Republican activist in Nueces county. She's known Todd Hunter for years, well before he decided to try to return to the legislature in 2008 after serving a few terms in the late 80's and early 90's.

I think I'll ask Todd about CSCOPE reform at the Nueces County Republican Party Lincoln Dinner next week. We'll have a large crowd. US Senator Ted Cruz is the speaker.
