SEATTLE A state legislator started a firestorm by claiming bicyclists add to greenhouse gas emissions by breathing heavily as they ride.
Bike shop owner Dale Carlson said he was so concerned about a proposal to tax bicycle sales that he wrote to state legislators.
The email he received back from the transportation committees ranking Republican, Ed Orcutt of Kalama, made an unusual claim.
He talked about the effect on global warming we have from breathing hard, said Carlson.
Orcutt refuted the idea that cycling is environmentally friendly by explaining that cyclists have an increased heart rate and respiration.
Orcutt wrote that means the act of riding a bike results in greater emissions of carbon dioxide from the rider. Since CO2 is deemed to be a greenhouse gas and a pollutant, bicyclists are actually polluting when they ride, the email said.
Oh, I thought that was amusing, said Carlson.

OMFG... are you serious?
So the liberals want to legislate what we consume and want to legislate against the obese, but they don’t want us to exercise because it will contribute to “emissions?”
GTFO!
So, what's the connection here? Well, it's simple ~ the leftwingtards also believe that bicycles are the way to a biologically safe world which means their bicycle sales folks are among their pantheon of minor dieties. The Republican took a chance to skewer him too as a proxy stand in for leftwingtard environuts and enviroweanies!
It's just another way to poke a stick in the environmental extremists spokes!
That is certainly in my top 5 of the stupidest things I have EVER heard a politician say. What a moron. Does anyone with a brain run for office anymore?
and...what else will they set their sights on? (Yikes!)
To say they are maroons is disrespectful of maroons.
I guess this goes for sex also...
LOL
Then we should ban SEX..................
I’m going to be using it the next time some local idiot starts crying that we need to spend more on bike trails.
It’s a known fact that getting excited, emotion, statism and the like causes more perspiration and CO2 that remaining calm, collected, pragmatic, logical and conservative.
Therefore, the ‘Rats, statists, liberals, progressives, who use emotional arguments contribute tremendously to glowbull warming.
Conservatives, on the other hand, by using reason, do not.
They want us to stop breathing. I’ve known it for quite some time.
Yup. All they had to say was seattle and that should have ended the statement right then. I look at it as feeding our little plant friends so they can keep producing Oxygen for us.
I spent years at off-road.com writing about people this crazy and even this very issue in one article... and many thought I was being ridiculous.
TOLD YAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps he was just trying to take Rush’s approach of “demonstrating absurdity by being absurd”, albeit it’s a strange place to do it.
Well, this means only one thing. High lung capacity cyclists should be banned.
Deemed by whom? And did these lawmakers seek permission from exercise queen Michelle Obama before making their statement about cycling?
Queen Michelle Obama Wore $156 T-Shirt For Bike Workout
Perhaps we should kill them, Orcutt.
Perhaps we should kill all athletes.
Then all non-athletes.
Then all land animals.
Fish breath too, do they not?
What about the birds, Orcutt?
Mankind has lost it’s f***ing mind.
GOOD! I HATE “Pedal-Bikers”! Bastard want to use the streets and roads the I and ALL other motorists PAY FOR with MY Gas Taxes. I say let’s have a 9% Road useage tax for ALL “Pedal-Bike” Parts and “Pedal-Bike” Bikes. THEN and ONLY Then they can use OUR roads/streets. Let’s “spread the “wealth”” around some!
The crazy things that one can come up with while sitting around smoking pot, or shooting up the H. Fortunately, all of the crazies tend to reside along the coast. Once you move inland further east, especially east of the Cascades, and into the high desert, it’s actually pretty conservative territory. Something about the coast must attract the loonies.
