Department of Homeland Stupidity: Huddle like Sheep and Die

The Department of Homeland Security just posted a video called "Options for Consideration Active Shooter Training Video." Its grossly incompetent guidance on how to survive a workplace shooting underscores the Obama administration's total lack of fitness to tell citizens what kind of firearms they can own for self-protection. We should also make sure that as many police as possible see this DHS video, which portrays law enforcement professionals as incompetent buffoons who recklessly endanger their partners and innocent bystanders.

Duck and Cover versus Huddle like Sheep

The DHS video takes a cue from the much-maligned "Duck and Cover" film of the Cold War era by advising people to hide under desks, which would actually be the right thing to do upon seeing the flash of a nuclear bomb. The desk would block the bomb's heat, along with shards of imploded glass. If you were far enough from Ground Zero that the entire building did not collapse on you, you could easily walk away with minor or no injuries while everybody who did not "duck and cover" was ripped apart by flying glass and/or burned to death by the thermal effects. A nuclear bomb will not, however, walk into your school or workplace and look under desks for individual people to kill.

At 1:44 in the video, a woman hides under a desk and pulls a chair after her to conceal her. Note that for every person who agreed with this video, more than ten disapproved, and with good reason. All the shooter has to do is look under the desks to find the people who have followed DHS's advice to huddle there like sheep, and then slaughter them accordingly.

You underestimate them. They have been indoctrinating your children through their entire school years. Most of them are proper little brown shirts now. They will get all of the information they need through school and medical records. They routinely ask kids about guns in the home and all of these data are recorded. Guaranteed they will use these data to target and take out the threats (you) before you know what is happening.

You remind me of the HL Mencken essay “The Malevolent Jobholder,” wherein he advises a system whereby citizen be allowed to kill government officials so long as they can show cause before a jury afterwards. It was well dramatized in the libertarian sci-fi classic “Lone Star Planet.” I see it as a useful suggestion.

Very funny, actually, but inaccurate.

The victims in Pompeii were by and large on the run when killed by superheated gases and then covered by a rain of ash and small pumice stones or lapilli. The ash also formed hollow molds of the victims after the bodies rotted away, which an enterprising archaeologist filled with plaster to make the famous casts. The victims were mostly found in the streets (and the personal recollections of Pliny the Younger indicate that a good number did manage to escape, although his uncle did not).

On the other hand, the victims in nearby Herculaneum were incinerated by a pyroclastic flow while trying to "duck and cover" in the warehouses at the docks, since ships could not get out against the prevailing wind. But there was nothing left but bones, which were discovered for the first time fairly recently.

There are at least two issues going on here. There is some truth in saying that a civilian responder should be competent in the use of their weapon and informed as to the laws. This is easily done. The main focus of the government seems to be on denying the civilian responder the power to control his or her own destiny. The very idea of a civilian having the power to stop a shooter is terrifying to the government. We must be told that we are not trained, not competent, and we must hide with our hands above our heads so that the “trained professionals” will not shoot us.

I agree. I’m saying they needed to let more of the “great generation” and early boomers die off first. There are still to many of us/them. And they are running out of time anyway.

I very much see us as similar to ancient Rome, only our (all of western civilization) fall will be much greater. We have much farthe from which to fall. It truly will be global this time.

I recommend to anyone that will listen to bone up on Daniel, Ezekiel, Revelation and, frankly, the whole bible. What is going on has never been more obvious.

I think it is good to compare this to an early South Park episode, where the town was threatened by a volcano, and the stupid people were given a “duck & cover” movie to watch, as what they should do when lava was flowing towards them.
