I'm sure we've all seen by now the "photo op" of President Obama shooting skeet. If he's shooting skeet then I'm Daffy Duck.
Skeet [clay disks of bright colors] are thrown by a machine from two towers erected to the right and left of the shooter. (There are other set ups like ones used for "sporting clays" but that isn't represented in the White House photo release.) Usually, the skeet is thrown about ten or more feet above the ground. The shooters are arranged in a semi-circle at various stations around the semi-circle. The "group" of shooters lines up at one stage and each shoot in turn. They then move to the next station and shoot again. Each spot is designed for the shooter to shoot above the horizon. This is for safety and learning too that when in the field, a hunter never shoots a shotgun below the horizon. A small fact that Vice President Dick Cheney forgot when he wounded his hunting partner a few years ago. Skeet are then thrown either from right to left or left to right or both at once. It is very challenging and the shooter either uses a double barrel shotgun or a semi automatic shotgun. Each shooter is limited to two shots.

The picture is is staged, but the author lot the article loses all credibility when he claims to be a skeet shooter and has never seen a ported shotgun at a skeet range or even knows what one is.
As far as the photo, I hear all kinds of stuff that I somewhat disagree with.
- He could be popping off seriously late and that could explain the near horizontal plane of the gun. I mean, he's not the fastest guy, that I'd bet on.
- The writer doesn't seem to really know what he's talking about; that smoke is quote common. It normally has a different appearance though because we don't see things in freeze-frame like a high speed shutter does.
- Although he looks rather uncomfortable and unnatural, he is a lefty. I see guys planting the stock butt much higher than that (even really seasoned shooters) and getting your cheek on the stock is proper form. This is especially true for guys who do not start from the shoulder ready position... they often "snap" the gun upwards and plant it against their cheek as they line up the shot.
Personally, I believe the guy was there shooting clays... or at least trying to and it was most likely just long enough to get in a good series of photos or appease some donor. But let's not allow that to distract from the reality of things; this guy is an anti and there is absolutely no question about it. He may not have an issue with shooting clays, but I'll guarantee he thinks you should have to leave your shotgun at the club when you leave to go home. He will never say it openly because his problem is that there are just as many democrats who are furious with these gun-grab efforts as there are republicans.
It is possible on a low house bird, shooting from position 7, one might shoot with the gun that low, but his standing position is so poor for the shot that it would be impossible to make the double.
Possible he is shooting sporting clays and I suspect that the White House people that released the picture and Obama himself, don’t have a clue what the difference is between skeet, trap, and sporting clays.

Any reasonable person has to conclude that this guy and his lackeys lie 24/7/365 by default, and that any truthful word is a rare exception or accident.
We are at the point were we are compelled [by survival instinct] to take careful note of who is on what side of the fence.

Around his entire body and the gun is a weird ‘aura’ of incongruously smaller pixels...some of them uniformly triangular as if the background and layer resolutions don't match.
It's -really- weird looking.
If I had to guess, I'd say it's an extremely recent photo of him 'shopped into a summer background.

The smoke coming out the vents is odd, should be distributed more, but if it's fake it's a good one.

Yes, I think it is real. It was obviously posed, as you need some decent equipment to catch the shot at the point that the shotgun is recoiling. Several ways to do it, but clearly posed.

If I fired like that, I’d be black and blue. Not even a “beginner” would shoot like that. The first thing I was taught when starting out with shotguns many moons ago was how to hold it properly.
I still think two things are odd. First how no gas is coming out of the ports on the left side of the muzzle, and second how there is no extended choke tube on the lower barrel. you usually would not mix flush and extended tubes.

My contention is he’s shooting a low load blank that has very, if any, recoil.
