CUMMING (AP) - Iowa Senator Tom Harkin said he will not seek re-election in 2014.

The 73-year-old told The Associated Press in an interview, "It's just time to step aside."

By the time Harkin would finish a sixth term, he would be 81 years old.

Right age to retire and I suspect he wants to vote for the Gun Control Bill when it comes up.

That's the first thing that I thought, too. It looks like he already has an "F" rating from the NRA, though. He probably would have voted for the gun control bill anyway.

Iowa has long been the most politically bi-polar state...they've been sending Harkin and Grassley back to the senate for decades...

This is totally different from the Chambliss announcement. Saxby was gonna get primaried, and could well have lost. Harkin would win, but it'd be a tough campaign, and since the Dems are gonna lose the senate in 2014, why bust your back to win a seat in the MINORITY

“A great pick-up opportunity for us with the right candidate.”

That is what we said about Missouri, North Dakota, and Montana last year, all red states won easily by Romney.

North Dakota, and Montana last year

OK, how do we keep the voters from voting third party, throwing the seat to the Dems.

That is the question.

According to the latest figures I could find — for 2011 — 75 members of the Senate in that year had American Conservative Union lifetime ratings lower than 90 percent.

Since the Senate hasn’t changed much in the past two years, Conservatives will have an opportunity to pick up 75 more seats in the Senate over the next three election cycles. During that time, many old Democratic and RINO geezers will be calling it a day for one reason or another.

If the Conservative cause is alive and well, many young Conservatives will be enlisting to fight the enemy by becoming candidates for the U.S. Senate in the next few years. Conservative organizations should be aggressively recruiting such candidates, since the RNC is in the grip of moderates, then training them in how to conduct winning campaigns.

Yes, and whichever Republican runs had better erase the word “rape” from his vocabulary.

Daniel Ortega is saddened by the news.

Good riddance to Harkin—an old Commie traitor from way, way back.

Great point. Also, if a reporter asks you about the age of the Earth answer: “That question would be best directed to Dr. XXXX, head of the Geology Department of the nearest university”. If they ask again or ask a variation of this question, same answer.

The only thing I know him from is Howard Dean’s famous gaffe. “Not only are we going to New Hampshire, Tom Harkin...”

Good. He was a liar anyway, saying he flew around Vietnam, I believe...then exposed as a liar.

Most Democrats get away with lying, (see: Bill Clinton) or sodomizing their staff (see: Gerry Studds), or even killing someone (see: Ted Kennedy).

Such behavior is celebrated by the perverted left.
