WASHINGTON -- Four years after making history by becoming the first African-American president, Barack Obama will kick off his second term on Monday with a scaled-back inauguration that reflects the tempered expectations for his next four years in office.
Lingering high unemployment, bitter political battles and a divisive re-election campaign have punctured the mood of optimism and hope that infused Obama's 2009 inauguration after a sweeping election win.
This time, Obama's inauguration will feature smaller crowds and a reduced slate of inaugural balls and parties to match the more subdued tenor of the times.
When Obama raises his right hand to be sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts outside the U.S. Capitol at 10:55 a.m. Chicago time, it will be his second time taking the oath in 24 hours.
He had a private swearing-in on Sunday at the White House because of a constitutional requirement that the president be sworn in on Jan. 20. Rather than stage the full inauguration on a Sunday, the main public events were put off until Monday.
Obama begins the day worshiping at St. John's Episcopal Church across from the White House. He will then take the oath again and deliver his inaugural address from the Capitol's west front overlooking the National Mall, where a crowd of up to 700,000 is expected to watch.
That is down significantly from the record 1.8 million people who jammed Washington in 2009 for Obama's first inauguration.
As Inauguration Day dawned and people streamed through the wintry cold toward the Capitol grounds, Washington was in security lockdown, with thousands of police and National Guard troops deployed, barricades up and Humvee military vehicles blocking major intersections.
Outside the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue, an elaborate presidential viewing stand, encased in bullet-proof glass, awaited Obama and other VIPs

No matter how many commies go to this “event” they’ll leave DC an absolute wreck.

By not turning my TV on today at all, I will probably save a LOT on my electric bill. I figure, at Least $.08.
Every little bit helps.
There, fixed it.
Why is my soul not stirred by the significance of the second Immaculation?
Mostly for the same reason it was not at the first one.
Mourning in America again.
Wonder how the networks will fake the ratings on this fiasco....
A “sweeping” win but numbers today are expected to be “significantly down” from 4 years ago.
Yet we still high unemployment, lethargic recovery (if at all), divisive animosity on the part of his oppressionist government, a festering anger at America’s new Idi Amin Da Da Emporer-for-Life, and a media that continues to blame all these things Obama promised to fix but could not - would not- on our lame assed Republicans in Congress.
What’s it gonna be 4 years from now? Will we have a “Crowning for Life” Coronation for him? Will we have a Biden Presidency Inauguration where he’s driven to the mall in a short yellow school bus replete with padding and personal protection (self) helmet?
What’s it gonna be? Right now, nothing would surprise me.
He was not born in Africa (maybe) and momma was a white atheist who mooched her way through life. "White trash" might be the appropriate label for momma.
I think MLK would be disgusted.
We wanted to attend but we would have missed our time slot on the gun range.
The Lord must be sorely tempted by such a gathering.
Ok, I’m really confused. Axelrod and a number of the anointed one are leaving to begin a non-profit organization that will be used to force Republicans into agreeing with what the magic one wants during his 2nd(and hopefully last) term. How is this organization suppose to work.
I’m just hoping that there is no widespread looting & riots
I’m watching “The Search for Spock” and when that’s over, “The Undiscovered Country”. Star Trek saves the day.
Allah be with you.
Saw an ad to that effect on NBC with Brian Williams as the mouthpiece, using words about how American democracy is unique, blah, blah, blah...
Funny. The DC streets look empty. Where are all the Hussein groupies?
