House Republicans will vote next week to raise the nations $16.4 trillion debt ceiling for three months and stop pay for members of Congress in until the Senate passes a budget something it has not done in nearly four years.
Speaker John Boehner said that the "principle is simple: no budget, no pay," during his closing remarks at the House Republican members retreat Friday in Williamsburg, Va.
Details of how the no-pay proposal would work in practice are unclear, in light of existing budget law and constitutional restrictions on changing congressional salaries in the middle of a term.
We are going to pursue strategies that will obligate the Senate to finally join the House in confronting the governments spending problem," Boehner continued.
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said that next week Congress will authorize the temporary debt limit to give the Senate and the House time to pass a budget.
"The first step to fixing this problem is to pass a budget that reduces spending," the Virginia Republican said. "The House has done so, and will again. The Democratic Senate has not passed a budget in almost four years, which is unfair to hardworking taxpayers who expect more from their representatives. That ends this year."
House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California added: "Tackling our nation's debt requires an actual deficit reduction plan from Republicans and Democrats so the American people can evaluate the tough, but necessary choices before them."
The move pares back the GOPs strategy in the upcoming debt-ceiling talks with President Barack Obama by bypassing the opportunity to extract pledges for deep spending cuts out of Obama for the time-being.

Unfortunately this will hurt the honest few more than the multimillionaire many. Its pocket change to most of them.
I think he would be better off just shutting the house down until the senate presents a budget.
Agreed. Then the reps could go home and save us all some money that way.
This is a really poor idea. This is the best they can come up with. We are so screwed.
My only concern is that it puts most pressure on the tea partiers who aren’t making millions through other means.
“My only concern is that it puts most pressure on the tea partiers who arent making millions through other means.”
Ya know it’s this kind of “concern” that has the GOP in knots and folks in this forum constantly yelling at Repubs.
We can’t have it both ways - there is always going to be winners and losers.... in all circumstances.
This is more harmful to the best of them than to the worst of them and is basically meaningless to debt.
But low info voters like yourself like exciting headlines.
House Republicans will vote next week to raise the nations $16.4 trillion debt ceiling for three months and stop pay for members of Congress in until the Senate passes a budget -- something it has not done in nearly four years.Or, we could build 537 scaffolds on the Mall and hang all of our problem children simultaneously -- making sure to capture it on vid so each subsequent freshman class can be required to view it on their first day.
This is a stupid proposal and isn’t even good theater. I guess that’s why the gop is called the Stupid Party.
This is an excellent idea and about damn time the Republicans have done this.
It puts the fact that the Democrat Senate hasn’t passed a budget in years front and center. And if the Republicans hold their ground it might actually get reported as such.
how does the 27th amendment come in?
Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining.
Get back to me when they actually DO something; until then it’s just blowing smoke (as usual)
Boehner is lieing through his teeth.
The 27th only freezes COLA and raises. These clowns will continue to draw their pieces of silver from our tax money. They just will not see their raises kick in.
That is the way I read the 27th.
These leeches have been draining our checkbook forever and there isn’t a one of them that needs the pay they are getting. They got to the “trough” by having enough money inhand (or behind them). It cost money to play at that level and I trust they have adequate reserves to carry them for some time. this “bill” is only window dressing.
Based on our constitution the house can do nothing by itself. In short, there is nothing you can dream up that doesn’t require Senate conferencing and presidential signature. Nothing can be accomplished but everybody wants something, even the conservative base
You can’t even accomplish not increasing the debt limit because that leaves us with only 2/3 of the money needed to meet current obligations of the country. In other words, it will give the enemy a national issue to use in 2014. Then conservatives will have zero input at all.
The place IMHO to attack this is the amount of interest on the debt we pay each year. Conservatives should hammer home that that 3-4 hundred billion each year would pay for major programs, so it is a waste
It can’t go on. In just a decade it could be 25% of budget and especially if inflation raises interest rates
You are correct.
Unless the Senat agrees and the President signs, the effort is just silly
“It cant go on. In just a decade it could be 25% of budget and especially if inflation raises interest rates.”
You’re right: it can’t go on. But it won’t be the politicians who force the issue. It will be when our currency is devalued to the point where a loaf of bread costs you $25. IF you can find some fool who will sell it to you for that.
Economic destruction will come before political reform does. Prepare accordingly.
