A working group led by Vice President Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, the sources said.
To sell such changes, the White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses. White House aides have also been in regular contact with advisers to New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I), an outspoken gun-control advocate who could emerge as a powerful surrogate for the Obama administrations agenda.

In addition to potential legislative proposals, Bidens group has expanded its focus to include measures that would not need congressional approval and could be quickly implemented by executive action, according to interest-group leaders who have discussed options with Biden and key Cabinet secretaries. Possibilities include changes to federal mental-health programs and modernization of gun-tracking efforts by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Obamas advisers have calculated that the longer they wait, the more distance there is from the Newtown massacre and the greater the risk that the bipartisan political will to tackle gun violence will dissipate.
This is not something that I will be putting off, Obama said on NBCs Meet the Press in an interview broadcast last Sunday.
At the White House meeting, Stanek said, the vice president indicated that there was a very short timeline for him to get back to the president with his recommendations because the American public has a short memory.

The Republic IS done, regardless.
“...the White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses...”
How typical of a crminal regime: threatening extortion against businesses!
Sandy Hook was perfect. Too perfect for my take. I don’t think we know what happened. There have to be tapes, 911 calls with gunfire that documents whether the shots fired were from handguns or a rifle(s). Teachers’ stories have not come out. Nor the kids who might have been looking out the windows and seeing who was coming or going. The guy in camo/gear of some kind in the woods.
Dec 14th marks the death of George Washington. With teams of the IRGC/al Quds/AQ/cartels in this country right now, how better to get back at the US. Where was that Malik Shabazz guy or one of his ilk? Most of those killed were White.
Jarrett said payback. 0bama said revenge. They meant it. Besides, this event got Benghazi out of the discussion....and that leads straight to the Oval Office—which they know very well.
I have no idea why people are getting so worked up about this. unless king barack issues another one of his rotal decrees, he hasn’t got the votes in the house. whatever mr. 51% is thinking, he can’t get it passed. not democratically, anyway.
Good. Let them focus on this and waste their political capital.
Time for gun owners to march on Washington, preferably wearing Gadsden flags.
The man is a dictator, he don’t need no stinkin’ votes.
Hollywood took cigarettes out of movies and TV to keep viewers from mimicking the behavior. And it worked! Smoking has decreased in a big way.
We don’t need gun control. We need Hollywood control.
Each of these shooters lately were insane, and at least two had some Satanist leanings. I would not put it past the government at all to make these people useful (albeit insane) idiots.
I thought the “republic was done” if ObamaCare became law?
I thought the “republic was done” if Obama won a second term?
Not trying to be a wet blanket, but we keeping moving that line in the sand. He's gotten everything else he's wanted; why should this be any different. I have no faith in the House...look who they reelected as Speaker.
We were “done” a long time ago.
Time to stand up. If we do not. All is over.
Need I say more?
Wow - they can clamp down on guns and gun owners like this?
You’d think they could come up with ways to find out who’s coming over our border (and stop it.)
You’d think they could ferret out possible terrorists and terror cells (and shut them down.)
You’d think they could stamp out illegal drugs and their use.
But no - that would an unlawful violation of Constitutionally protected civil rights of junkies, illegal aliens and terrorists who want to kill us....

“How about mandatory prison for politicians that send assault rifles to the Mexican drug cartels?”

I’d recommend flogging and hanging.
I started to to get pissed reading your comment.
Then I thought about it.
I hate to burst the bubble of the recreational drug users up on Capitol Hill in Washington but how would have any of this stopped their Newtown dream from happening?
Then I thought about it.”

I haven't lost faith in “us”, just the POS Republican Establishment. Oh, and BTW, FU Paul Ryan! I still can't believe this wormy POS voted on that budget to raise taxes on our fellow Americans!
Yep!
not only repeal 1968 and 1934 acts, propose to fingerprint, photograph and do background check of citizenship for every person registered or registering to vote penalty for perjury immediate jail time. also charge same fee $200 to register to vote and $200 to update your address everyone votes on the same day. for each military vote that doesnt reach the polls in time a $100,000 penalty against the state... one right is as good as another I’m tired of these illegal assault voters being bused in in high capacity groups and killing our electoral system...
Any gun controls bills, BTW, should be answered with more pro-Second-Amendment bills—bills that add to freedoms for all classes, demographics, etc. (votes for the future).
