Astrologers call it the Saturn Return, which arrives at about age 30. At that age, Schumann, Chopin and Brahms had miracle years in which they wrote some of their best material. In 1859,
Louis Moreau Gottschalk turned 30, and it was the year of some of his best piano material and his first symphony. It started with a caprice based on Stephen Fosters My Old Kentucky Home.
Gottshalk: Columbia
Another great dance tune to get the feet tapping.
Hurrah Galop
A scintillating little waltz for maidens and ahem! non-maidens alike.
The Maidens Blush
A cute little Cuban tango.
Creole Eyes
A delightful polka.
Orfa
Although described as a polka, it is closer to a waltz.
Pensive
A caprice using mazurka rhythm and rondo format.
Polonia
This sounds a bit like Scott Joplin, who came along four decades later. You can imagine this being played in saloons all across North and South America.
Reponds-moi
Another gem from his days in Cuba.
Souvenir of Havana
Two short polkas, only recently discovered.
Polka in B-flat
Polka in A-flat
Watch his hands on this nocturne, and youll see how difficult it really is.
La chute des feuilles
A short caprice in a minor key.
O ma charmante, espargnez-moi
Somewhere between Chopin and Joplin.
Suis-moi

In late 1860, there was a bit of unpleasantness between the states of the US. In spite of his upbringing in New Orleans,
Louis Moreau Gottschalk decided to take a stand for the Union. Considering his mixed-race background, this probably shouldnt come as a surprise. In 1862, he returned to America from Puerto Rico and began a tireless schedule of concerts to raise funds for the Union cause. In a mere 18 weeks he played 85 concerts all around the North, and that pace never let up.
His works from the Civil War contain two patriotic fantasies that have survived. In The Union, he quotes The Star Spangled Banner (long before it became the National Anthem), Hail Columbia and Yankee Doodle.
Gottschalk: The Union
This is a fantasy on a patriotic song of the era.
The Battle Cry of Freedom
This is one of his best known meditation pieces. There is the feel of a Chopin nocturne here.
The Dying Poet
Here is an example of a piece that Louis arranged for piano 4-hands.
La Gallina
And then Louis got himself into serious trouble in San Francisco.
In 1865, San Francisco was all about the Barbary Coast. It was a city of saloons, gambling joints and ahem! bawdy houses. The law was less interested in legal niceties than in removing the bodies from the streets in the morning. Long before New Yorks Stonewall Riots (1969), San Francisco had a thriving no, a positively flaming! gay life. Homosexual sailors coming into town would wear a bandanna on one side of their trousers if they wanted to pitch and the other if they wanted to catch. The entire city was a sexual free-for-all, Sodom and Gomorrah rolled into one. Why would anybody get angry at Gottschalk?
Remember those hotel keys? Louis, like Franz Liszt before him, had combined those hotel keys and his good looks to parlay them into a wonderfully active sex life with the ladies. Then one day he bedded a lady who was a student at the Oakland Female Seminary across the bay. She was not a married lady looking for adventure, but was gasp! a virgin. This was a step too far. San Francisco has standards, Mr. Gottschalk! Local law enforcement took notice, and Louis had to flee town and America. He never came back and took off for South America.
