A newspaper in New York has received a wave of criticism from its readers after publishing the names and addresses of all of the individuals with handgun or pistol permits in its coverage area.
Hundreds of residents in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties were surprised to find their names and addresses listed on a map posted by The Journal News on Sunday. Users can click any dot on the map to see which of their neighbors has a permit for a gun.
The map sparked more than 500 comments from readers within a day of its appearance on the website, many of them voicing outrage at the paper's decision to make the information public.
"This is CRAZY!! why in the world would you post every licensed gun owner information?? What do you hope to accomplish by doing this. This is the type of thing you do for sex offenders not law abiding gun owners. What next? should i hang a flag outside my house that says I own a gun? I am canceling my subscription with your paper today!!!" said commenter Curtis Maenza.
"How about a map of the editorial staff and publishers of Gannett and Journal News with names and addresses of their families…," wrote commenter George Thompson.
All of the names and addresses were compiled through public records. The paper also requested the information from Putnam County, which is still compiling the records for publication, according to The Journal News' website.
In a statement to ABC News, The Journal News said its readers "are understandably interested to know about guns in their neighborhoods," because of the conversation about gun control on its website after the shooting in Newtown, Conn., last week. .

Perhaps the non owners should object. Bad guys can case a house, find out that there are no guns, and have easy pickings.
Post a story Headlined - Here is a list of the people (w/addresses) associated with his paper who don’t have weapons for security and who keep cash in the house.

I raised my kids in an ‘older’ neighborhood of Washington DC, Fairfax County - inside the beltway.
My kids used to hate it cause our house never got TP’d, car windows never soaped up, no pranks at halloween, if guys came by the house and I happened to be there they got the 3rd, 4th, and 5th degree, I would make casual remarks about cleaning my guns etc.
The probable ‘real’ reason for no problems, I was one of the few ‘working’ people (most either retired or worked for the Govt) in the neighborhood and was known to pay well for lawn work, shoveling snow, hired the local ‘punks’ (all teenage pimply faced kids are punks when it comes to 2 teenage daughters) to work for me during the summer etc.
Ran into one of the kids years later - he had done 6 in the Army and was a deputy sheriff and the ‘nice guy’ subject came up and the ‘kid’ said “We weren’t ‘afraid’ of you as in scared but we did ‘respect’, in the military sense, you and figured a good place to get shot was messing in your yard”

No, payback is best. Let’s publish a list of ALL EMPLOYEES of the paper with their addresses and work schedules. Let’s put out all the info on them that we can.
The Dims won’t stop a tactic UNTIL it is used against them. Let’s publish names and addresses and STAGE PROTESTS IN FRONT OF THEIR HOMES! They do it to our guys; let’s show them how it feels.
I would imagine that any law enforcement folks on the list are pissed.

How about the adresses of the editor and author of the article? There is always an add that keeps popping up which lets you look up the arrest records and booking pictures of anybody. Maybe the journo-creep has had a drunk driving or other encounter with the law. Inquiring minds want to know.

It wouldn’t surprise me if this Hassen woman has already received hundreds or thousands of emails that she might consider threatening. It wouldn’t surprise me if she is going to spend Christmas in a hotel this year for the safety of her family.
