Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) said 'I did my part in negotiations with President Barack Obama to avert the fiscal cliff by offering a proposal to raise taxes on millionaires.
Just hours before the House plans to vote on the Speakers Plan B, which will raise the marginal tax rate for people earning $1 million or more per year to 39.6 percent, Boehner said Republicans have done everything we can to avoid the fiscal cliff.
The fiscal cliff refers to the expiration of the Bush tax rates and the start of automatic spending cuts (sequestration) on Jan. 2, unless Congress and the White House act. The tax issues also include the child tax deduction; the end of the 10 percent bracket; and the Alternative Minimum Tax.
President Obama and Senate Democrats havent done much of anything, Boehner said during a Capitol Hill press conference today. Their Plan B is to slow walk us over the fiscal cliff.
For weeks the White House has said that if I moved on rates, that they would make substantial concessions on spending cuts and entitlement reform, Boehner said.
I did my part, he said. Theyve done nothing.
The presidents last offer of $1.3 trillion in new revenue [taxes] with only $850 billion worth of spending reductions fails to meet the test of balanced that he continues to call for.
Frankly, Boehner continued, Im convinced that the president is unwilling to stand up to his own party on the big issues that face our country. Time is running short.
The House will act today and itll be up to the Senate Democrats and the White House to act, he said.

;^)
the White House came out with an offer on Monday that was within a whisker of the one the Boehner himself had proffered the week before. Then all of a sudden the Republicans disappear instead of offering a counter.
What planet are you people on if you think that the Republicans, and ESPECIALLY the Conservatives, won’t get blamed for this debacle when it crashes the US economy again?
Romney/Ryan tried that in the last election and we lost. We have to keep things simple so the masses can understand:o(
Because the Republicans only serve as enablers for the Democrats. We can't fight when our supposed Army is always busy bending over for the enemy. Get rid of the collaborators first so they can't stab you in the back, then take the fight to the enemy.
At some point it’s not about politics anymore. This is an actual real life situation that WE created last year, wherein we thought we could solve this our way after we won the election, but then we lost the election.
Now we have an offer from the White House that actually makes a pretty serious reform on Social Security and Medicare, and we’re going to leave it there in favor of tanking the economy? I am so confused how you think that anyone will support a capital C conservative candidate in 2012 if the right wing of the party perpetuates this debacle of a tax hike on the principal of not voting for a tax hike. It is literally insane.
The Senate is coming back on the 27th on the expectation that there is a deal by then that does not destroy the US economy. I hope theyre right.
You just answered the point I have been trying to make.
I too, believe there is a Grandest of All Bargains coming down
the pike.
This vote is nothing more than a “test” vote for Bonehead.
It will tell him how many RAT votes he will need from Pelosi
just as he needed RAT votes to pass the debt ceiling deal
two years ago. If I am correct, that Grand Bargain got @40
RAT Votes to pass two years ago. Would not have passed without
the RAT votes.
“What planet are you people on if you think that the Republicans, and ESPECIALLY the Conservatives, wont get blamed for this debacle when it crashes the US economy again?”
Like they won’t no matter what? The breathtaking stupidity displayed by the GOP fanbase on this thread is the reason the GOP caves. They know that no matter what amount of silver they take, there will be plenty of the faithful excusing their actions.
And it’s many of the same people on thread after thread doing it. Hmmmm...almost like it ...nah...that’d never happen.
When one of you explains why Bhoner has not exercized the constitutional power of the purse for 2 years, let me know. Until then, be content with perpetuating our collective problem.
I sure as hell HOPE there’s a grand bargain coming down the pike.!
but if the right wing doesn’t support this Plan B thing, then there’s no chance it will, and we go over the cliff, with the last official act having been the right wing of the Republican party not supporting their own speaker who has gotten a lot of meaningful concessions out of the white house. Who will get blamed?? The people who SHOULD get blamed, US!
Bravo Sierra. Ryan's plan "balanced" the budget in 29 years. He was the "fiscal hawk" of the duo, and not the one in charge.
Completely incoherent, sir.
This is the real world, this is actually happening.
Roll Call says 23 Republicans are already firm NO’s against this thing. If Boehner loses one more, then it fails, and the country goes into a huge recession in 10 days time. Congratulations. What a great victory to be proud of.
This bill is going nowhere. Harry Reid is not going to allow
a vote on it. And Zero has already said he will Veto it.
At some point they will all agree to screw us again with a different bill. This vote tonight, In my small opinion is nothing more that a starting point of where to get the votes
they need to screw us again.
Bonehead, because he has been out front acting desperate will
get the blame regardless. He has become the face of the cliff
while Zero and Harry Reid have been hiding. As a result, the
public already associates the cliff with Bonehead. At least
the one who dont pay close attention.
It is. was. and maybe always will be a no-win for the GOP to die on a hill for zero tax rate increases
at least this focuses on Pelosi’s and Schumer’s own blabber about taxing millionaires
barry soetero NEEDS a punitive tax on somebody, he is willing to watch the nation burn if he doesn't get it, that is fact
at least this limits the damage and calls out the democrats’ hypocrisy in whining that a tax on millionaires is not really enough for them and they will let the nation's economy crash until they get MORE MORE MORE
it was gonna fail anyway unless the dhimmicrats blinked
at least passing it put the onus on the dhimmis and showed the GOP willing to compromise with barry’s new taxes on “millionaires” (real millionaires)
those voting “no” on this are damaging the GOP, the party of stupid
Let's just talk about Boehner. I have no idea if this is the best deal he can get, or not. I pay attention but it's still not obvious that there is one true, perfect thing to do. It looks to me like he's done all he can to get the best deal possible but it's far more popular for those on FR to hate Boehner, no matter what he does. How would you like to be Boehner trying to deal with Obummer and the RATS in the Senate and still try to protect his caucus? He's in a thankless position. Oh, what the heck, it's fun to hate him and rip him in front of the rest of those Boehner haters here on FR and get their approval. To too many Freepers, Republicans are easier to hate than Obama and the RATS. I don't get it.
I repeat...
BREATHTAKING STUPIDITY.
Name one scenario that results in the GOP NOT getting blamed. Just one.
Name ONE reason that the GOP/Bhoner has not exercised the constitutional power of the purse FOR OVER 2 YEARS and stopped Obama’s spending dead in it’s tracks.
Just one.
The only incoherence is you and the likeminded GOP cheer squad’s inability to answer oe even address these points.
You and I both know the GOP will get the blame regardless.
And because Bonehead was so over exposed while Obama and Reid
hid. Bonehead has now become the face of the cliff. And because he was so visible and looked so desperate, the public
will blame him, regardless. Unfortunately, for him, he has
become the face of the cliff. Not a good place to be.
So, some people are more equal than others?
we are going over the cliff anyway, Obama wants it
i don’t agree with voting for any tax increase ever but, it’s all about PR now, the house repubs have positioned themselves so that they have passed a tax increase on the “rich” and cut spending
if reid and obama reject this and go over the fiscal cliff instead, they are the ones that start to look unreasonable, even with the media covering for them
the danger is that reid and obama will cave and take plan b, and repubs will have voted for a tax increase when they shouldn’t have...
Because doing so would be a political disaster, and likely an economic one, too. How’s that for a reason?
Your understanding of the Washington budget process must have been formed in the Early Pleistocene period.
What we have right now from Obama is the first meaningful reduction in the growth rate of Social Security benefits since the program was founded. You want to leave that on the table in favor of an absolutely swingeing set of tax hikes? WHY? WHat do you love so much about tax hikes?
Since that appears to be the problem (it's called the democrat/media complex), what's he supposed to do?
