A complaint about potentially harassing emails sent by a woman romantically linked to Central Intelligence Agency chief David Petraeus to a second woman sparked the security investigation that led Mr. Petraeus to suddenly resign on Friday, according to people familiar with the investigation.
U.S. officials familiar with the probe said the Federal Bureau of Investigation began its investigation following a complaint from a woman in Florida about Paula Broadwell, Mr. Petraeus's biographer and the woman identified by officials familiar with the probe as having had an extramarital affair with him.

Relationship Began Through Running
The woman's complaint alleged Ms. Broadwell was sending harassing emails to her about the nature of the relationship between Mr. Petraeus and the Florida woman.
Investigators began looking into Ms. Broadwell, a West Point graduate who wrote a biography of Mr. Petraeus, and over a period of months examined emails that initially suggested Mr. Petraeus's private Gmail account had been breached, these people said.
The revelations Saturday raised the possibility of a more complex situation surrounding Mr. Petraeus. While the specific contents of the emails couldn't be learned, people familiar with the investigations said they suggested Ms. Broadwell suspected the other woman was in a relationship with Mr. Petraeus. There is no evidence that Ms. Broadwell's suspicions were true.
Ms. Broadwell couldn't be reached for comment.
he FBI and prosecutors in Florida and North Carolina began investigating the possibility of email hacking, because at least some of the emails sent by Ms. Broadwell to the other woman included contents of messages that appeared to come from Mr. Petraeus's own account, these people said. The Justice Department and high-level officials, including Attorney General Eric Holder, were aware of the investigation for months,

Yeah, right. I bet it's got hidden damage from the storm and you're trying to unload it cheap.
I was thinking there may be a movie out soon. Considering the events, it may turn into a weekly Showtime Mini-series.
It’s proven out again, truth is truly stranger than fiction and only the surface has been scratched.
Possibly nothing.
This is the CIA we're talking about here. Nothing is as it seems.
In fact, if the affair began before Petraeus' appointment as DCI, its existence would have come out in the vetting process (unless Petraeus lied about it and the CIA was sloppy in doing its homework).
And it seems even stranger that the affair would have begun after the appointment considering the delicate nature of the job (she could very easily have been in the employ of the KGB or Mossad or the Chinese MSS).
This entire case is fishy.
Well, at least she’s got one shoulder to cry on.

Let me give you the dirty little secret about Petraeus. He runs five miles a day. He’s sixty years old. He’s run a lot of miles. What do you think his body fat is? Pretty low, I’d guess. What is your brain made of? Petraeus rose to the top of an organization (The Army) that glorifies and rewards long distance runners and people with low body fat. The Army wants loyal Officers, not smart Officers. What would the university professors look like if they all had to be able to run five miles in under 35 minutes and have 5% body fat? Those generals aren’t as smart as you’d hope they would be.

I wonder if she liked it?
“FBI Probed Woman Linked to Petraeus”
OUCH!
The entire FBI? God, what a slut!
A similar malapropism was cited by John Derbyshire in his latest Radio Derb podcast - quoting a news account of the fact that an openly homosexual Wisconsin state legislator (Marc Pocan) had won the U.S. House position left by successful Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin. The report stated that Pocan had “taken Tammy Baldwin’s open seat.”
Could Petraeus be blackmailed by Obama? Of course he could be. Petraeus had an affair while he was still in the Army. He has seen generals brought out of retirement to be punished for offenses they committed on Active Duty. Adultery is still a punishable offense in the Army. You don’t see it punished much because society doesn’t despise it too much. A lot of those admirals and generals who get canned because their boss has “lost faith in his judgement and leadership” are getting canned for affairs. Now, normally a general who has an affair is just allowed to quietly retire, but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you look up THE UNIFORM CODE OF MILITARY JUSTICE, it will show you the offense and maximum punishment. I’m sure it’s greater than being allowed to be retired. And what happens when the President says he wants the maximum punishment for this Officer. It could be pretty bad. Plus, Petraeus is a legend in his own mind. He would do most anything to protect his reputation. Obama had him by the short hairs.
Yeah, well Petraeus probed her first, and they were no doubt linked at some point.
It’s the Red Army 1938, only without the one-way ticket to The Lubyanka.
The long arm of the law.
I would say this...having spent twenty-two years in the Air Force...in the era when fitness wasn’t important and in the era when your career depended on fitness. The low-body fat folks weren’t exactly looking at a problem in the same way that others would. These folks ran for hours, then would come back to the office in an exhausted state but act like they were fully functional in the mental sense.
If you wanted the very best mentally out of one of these people...you did it in the early morning hours before their workout.
The only real problem is that Petraeus should have kept his own ‘probe’ in his pants.
“private Gmail account ???????”
WTF?!
“private Gmail account ?”
Good point! I was having email discussions with a friend in New Joisey last week, about what type of generator he should buy for his home. Next thing you know, everytime I open a newspaper site, there are ads for generators. Before that, it was guitar-related ads. “private Gmail account ?” Yeah,,,, riiiiiight!
