"After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."

Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus has resigned, citing "extremely poor judgment" for having an extramarital affair.

Petraeus, 60, told President Barack Obama of the affair on Thursday and offered to resign, a senior official told NBC News. Obama accepted his resignation in a phone call Friday afternoon.

"Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position," Petraeus said in a letter to CIA colleagues. "After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."

"This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation," Petraeus said in the letter.

The timing is curious.

Oh, bull, maybe in the old days not any longer. Any man or woman is not answerable to me because they are having an affair - it none of my business.

You never held a security clearance have you.

Having an affair and the risk of blackmail based on that affair is the reason why such things are part of a standard background investigation.

Imo, he got the bad news out, so he could spill the beans.

Hope that's right.

I agree; this reeks. Just a coincidence that the man at the CENTER of the Benghazi scandal just happens to resign, just a few days after the election, for this BS reason? Do people even resign over this kind of thing anymore? I mean doesn’t the beyond cynical population just expect that these public figures are all morally bankrupt anyway? I know his reputation is very good, but seems to me he could have just as easily done an “I’m so sorry...” speech.

Sure the guy was having an affair; but that can’t be the reason he resigned today.

I wonder if there are any reporters good enough to get the real story...

My sense is that he wanted out so badly. He’s been ruined by his association with Obama.

If you lie down with dogs.

I predict the good General, under the weight of oppressive guilt, will off himself Vince Foster style. I’m sure Axlerod has already written the note.

With this revelation, his testimony isn’t worth a bucket of warm spit. His integrity has been impeached.

Well, now that a sex scandal is involved, maybe Benghazi will get coverage.

I agree, why even confess to something that no one knew about. I think he was forced to say this so that anything he may come up with in the future will not be believed.

Cover up so he doesn’t have to testify next week.

On Thursday, November 15, at 2:30 p.m. the Senate Intelligence Committee will hear testimony about the September 11, 2012, terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Scheduled witnesses will include, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, CIA Director David Petraeus, FBI Deputy Director Sean Joyce, Under Secretary of State for Management Pat Kennedy, and National Counterterrorism Center Director Matthew Olsen. I highlighted Petraeus' name because the word I got says that his resignation means that he will not be asked to testify.

The extramarital affair story looks more like a cover story for the real reason that Petraeus is stepping down. The real reason is that this keeps him from giving testimony. The coverup is ongoing, just like the coverup by Attorney General Eric Holder in the Fast and Furious scandal. Like Petraeus, Holder is talking about resigining too. For the story about Petraeus not testifying, go to this story:

Committees: Benghazi hearings proceed without Petraeus

Huh, back in 98, the MSM told us during Clinton/Lewinsky that "sex doesn't matter".

Why should sex matter now?

Even though he is out of the CIA he can still be subpoenaed as a private citizen.

That's what I was thinking, as well.

This is not the first time I’ve heard of this happening (author having affair with subject). The Milwaukee police chief did something similar with a conservative talk show host. He’s still the MPD chief. She lost her job and her husband.

I think these men get so flattered that a woman is hanging on their every word that they lose sight of their obligations. The women ??? Who knows? Perhaps they think that if they fall into bed they’ll be privy to more secrets.

Didn’t Jack Welch leave his long time wife for his much younger publicist?

Screw the FBI, et al

The criminal marxist is in the White House.

Petraeus can take a long walk off a short pier...unless he comes forward to right the egregious wrong.

Two Navy Seals murdered and he’s covering for the Marxist.

Hey Petraeus what happened to the 22 Navy Seals who were murderer in retaliation for Osama Bin Laden?
