"After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."
Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus has resigned, citing "extremely poor judgment" for having an extramarital affair.
Petraeus, 60, told President Barack Obama of the affair on Thursday and offered to resign, a senior official told NBC News. Obama accepted his resignation in a phone call Friday afternoon.
"Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position," Petraeus said in a letter to CIA colleagues. "After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."
"This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation," Petraeus said in the letter.

Of course he could also spill the beans on Benghazi, which looks really bad for Obama.
Imo, he got the bad news out, so he could spill the beans.
Sounds like a new twist on “Wag the Dog”.
One article I read about it said the FBI has been investigating him over the affair which started while he was commanding in Afghanistan, Sooo if they have been investigating him for who knows how long, and the affair makes him a security risk as in being blackmailed, why did they put in the job of head of the cia and why did they wait until after the election to ask him to resign?
More to this than meets the eye.
I think Petraeus was forced out. I don’t think there was any affair.
Remember now, Petraeus clearly stated that HIS DEPT did not order a “stand down” order.
Petraeus was correct. According to law, NO ONE BUT THE PRESIDENT CAN ORDER A CROSS-BORDER AUTHORITY (CBA) order. Which means the “stand down” came from somebody in the WH - not the intel dept. Unless the WH issued the CBA, all the units in readyness would be forced to not complete the mission. Intel couldn’t do that .. Hillary couldn’t do that .. only the President has the CBA authority.
The WH had to get rid of Petraeus before he spilled the beans at the hearings next week. If Petraeus was asked who issued the “stand down” order - (under oath) he would be compelled to answer: the WH. This would, of course, mean that Obama intentionally allowed our American Citizens to be killed to protect .... WHO ..?? OR WHAT ..??
Then, this causes me to wonder .. what if we get attacked in America .. is Obama just going to trot off to bed and allow us to die too ..??
I don’t look for conspiracies .. but this whole Benghazi thing has been a fiasco from the start. I can’t get past the fact that Stevens and Smith might have been killed to keep another gun-running operation from being exposed.
This has Bengazi written all over it. One can assume that the reason
Betrayus spouted the video lies before the election, was because Obama
had leverage over him. I am guessing Betrayus is the one who decided
to come clean, to remove the leverage and resign.
Threatening to reveal embarrassing details?
That’s a self-revelatory comment.
Well, he did that to the Medicare recipients. Just going to let them die.
I hope he doesn't suffer a case of Obamacide before he is able to explain what really happened...
Even though he is out of the CIA he can still be subpoenaed as a private citizen.
Yes. The question is will the House GOP call him.
I am guessing Bonehead and Cantor want to move on to working
That grand bargain deal with Obame.
You know, the deal that screws Americans.
Exactly!!
Can you say Vince Foster.
And Ron Brown
That moment when you realize you know too much and it’s too late to do anything about it.
Hey Petraeus, was it with a woman? If not, was this just a physical thing or do you plan to marry him?
How’s your Benghazi hanging?
Do you like Gladiator movies?
Very plausible.
