It would be easy for me to dismiss Obama supporters as mentally defective but for one inconvenient fact: my mother, sharp as a tack at 92, is voting for him. And so is my sister, a San Francisco attorney who is no slouch in the brains department. Im not sure where my brother, a municipal employee, stands, but neither am I eager to find out. There is no bridging the political gap between us, and so we simply avoid discussing politics. The same goes for old friends, although newer ones are another matter. One of them walked out on our dinner together in a huff when an innocuous remark Id made about Abe Lincoln evidently bruised his self-righteously liberal, morally perfect heart . Good riddance. It is far better friends than he that I am worried about. Will they draw the line when I let slip my support for the right to bear arms, even concealed? A few of my wifes closest friends are unmitigated liberals, and its unclear how much longer well be able to tiptoe around the political rough edges when we get together socially. (more at the link)

Easy, that they are facilitating brutish animals.
For example, the genocide of slave descended black Americans through a combination of abortion, and encouraging illegitimacy and single parenthood, in which children are 60% more likely to be criminal offenders than if raised by a heterosexual couple.
As another example, embracing America’s enemies while despising our allies. Liberals have been calling vicious tyrants “agrarian reformers” since Lenin, ignoring their horrific acts and advocating their tyranny for America.
As other examples, “defining deviancy down”, turning the mentally ill out on to the street to fend for themselves, the rejection of religious liberty especially for Christians and now Jews, and supporting vicious murderers by gradually burdening the death penalty so that it now takes decades.
The bottom line is that even if they are not “brutish beasts” themselves, they take every opportunity to open the gates of the zoo to let such beasts attack innocent people.
To understand how the Left has distorted the debate over social, racial & religious questions in America, see Myths & Myth Makers In American "Higher" Education.
To put the whole campaign that suggests we are all interchangeable--an insult to what makes each of us unique--into perspective, World Government & Surrender By Subterfuge.
In your biographical comment, you say, "Reputations, legacies, causes, ideologies and religions all have to stand in the light of the facts." I heartily concur.
There has been tremendous damage done to the interests of all peoples by the fantasy world of the Left in trying to suppress all dissent on questions of the importance of race, heredity & family. It is not a bad thing to be different. The damage is done when those who need to pretend that we are interchangeable suppress honest discussion of the factors that are relevant in any discipline or area of concern.
While no one reading this ever sat in a classroom where the child on either side was his or her equal--all have different aptitudes, motivations, etc.--we allow Educationalists to pretend that "one size fits all," to the detriment of children of all races, classes, etc.. The resulting failures contribute directly to providing cannon fodder for Socialist demagogues preaching blame, envy & hatred, directed against those who succeed, rather than emulation for what actually works.

I think perhaps we’re defining liberalism differently. With the exception of how the welfare state has crippled a significant segment of black culture, most of who I would call liberals wouldn’t fit the anti-American San Francisco stereotype. What they do share is this misguided belief that government exists to take care of everybody, and no amount of reasoning seems to be able to convince them that does more harm than good.
Part of our unifying set of values, was always connected with blood & lines of dissent (i.e., family, etc.). (See the Preamble to the Constitution; the wording of the Fifth Commandment.)
While it is true that the original States had quite diverse populations, they came together in 1789 on the basis of mutual respect--a Constitution, which gave the Federal Government, no role in the area of social policy; no right to interfere with the various religious establishments in those States, etc..
Most of the immigrants who came in later--until the idiotic changes in the law in 1965, accepted the prevailing social values in the areas where they settled; accepted the union based upon mutual respect, and sought a major degree of assimilation into a culture, that had attracted them hither.
Unfortunately, that pattern gradually changed with the inauguration of the Welfare State, and changed yet more dramatically with the subsidization of incongruous immigration after 1965. Of course the inadequately protected Southern Border has become a major impediment to the cultural survival of the America that the Founding Fathers intended to vouchsafe to their posterity, by the Preamble to the Constitution.

“Just have to defeat them”
..and the policies that allow them to live in a alternate universe where everything is “free” and “g’mint” the solution to everything that ails them.
Hey, no harm no foul. I am often guilty of not stating my case well on these boards...always in a rush and multi tasking. I rarely “feel” argumentative...even though the written word comes across that way in short, quick, snippets.
It goes a lot deeper than that, for most. What you might think of as a “nice liberal” is only surface deep. Certainly most could not say why they embrace liberalism, only that they do.
But the same could be said about embracing real racism, that women are just objects, or that the wealthy are inherently bad. For many liberals, it is their own personal blend of what they want out of life, but that is provided by someone else.
I remember two things that left an impression on me about liberals. The first was on another, more liberal forum, where a thread was decidedly anti-Israel. Typically, those opposed to Israel would say, “I don’t hate Jews, but I despise Israel.” In rebuttal, others would point out that they were antisemitic, in the Israel and Jews are synonymous. The anti-Israel faction kept denying it.
Finally, one liberal became so aggravated that he blurted out, “Well, if hating Israel makes me an antisemite, then I am an antisemite!”
A rather cathartic moment, in that he finally said what he really thought.
The other bit was before Obama was nominated. There was an ordinary threat suggesting he might be the antichrist, which all presidential candidates get, I suppose.
Finally one Obama supporter said what he really thought, and it amazed me.
“I hope Obama is the antichrist, because if he is, he will have the power to give us what we want, and he will get revenge on the people we hate.”
An amazing thing to say, to say the least. Some terribly deep implications there.
But the bottom line of why do liberals embrace liberalism?, far too often boils down to “wanting free stuff, wanting to be taken *care* of by government, and invariably, wanting to ‘get even’ with whoever they think is a villain, most likely because they don’t embrace these beliefs.”
Funny that, all rolled up in a liberal, no matter what they appear to be, or say they are. So it is best to ignore the false front, and dig down to find out what lies beneath.
It is well worth the effort.
Family and Friends before ideology. No idea or words are worth being uncivil about. A person who cannot discourse reasonably and share a table with ANYONE who is similarly well behaved is nothing more than an animal who has learned how to not make messes in the house.
People have forgotten how to work together. We "celebrate our diversity" instead of honoring what binds us.

Can we leave the way their women look out of this?
Why should anyone waste their time reading a whole article when Scott says it all in a paragraph!! Excellent!
I did and yes she shoudl hear it, I;m pissed off with people thinking it;s alright to live on welfare, raise their kids on welfare and then live it large with new cars and liquor.
Yes It’s my and your money they live on and laughing about it does my head in but the fact is that it shows there is racism in that community and there is a thinking that welfare and living off others is alright.
My kids hear it all the time off many kids at their school how they;re getting free breakfast and lunch and my kids point out it is notfree as I will do
The most fascinating, and perhaps disturbing, thing about the high multidimensionality of intelligence is how it can manifest in the highest degree along one axis, and yet in an adjacent one be a black hole.

I guess what I’m not getting across here is that you can still be a liberal, and not believe in any of those things. Trust me, I know, I’ve been married to one for over 20 years now. Just for the record, she has decided that she cannot vote for Obama again.
She’s not anti-Israel, but anti-Palestinian.
She doesn’t get free stuff, but is taxed heavily to pay for the free stuff for others.
She’s much more religious than I am, which isn’t saying much as I have no real religious beliefs outside of believing that there something bigger than we are out there.
She’s not only pro-life, but delivers babies.
Still, she’s a liberal. Maybe it’s her European upbringing, but I’ve never been able to budge her an inch from deeply held liberal beliefs like: Healthcare is a right. Education must be provided for those who can’t afford it. The rich don’t provide jobs, they exploit labor. Affirmative action is necessary to right centuries old wrongs, and no her Teutonic self is never a beneficiary of AA. We really should be the world’s police officer. Those poor college students need contraceptives. And #1, the safety nets should have safety nets. Government can do no wrong in the name of safety.
Really, the last one is #1. One of the only political fights (as opposed to disagreements) we ever had was decades ago over the ever tightening DUI laws. What a monster she married that I could ever oppose laws that existed merely to keep people safe.
I know a dozen like her. None of them impoverished, uneducated or unproductive. None of them are malicious, corrupt, or self-serving. Not one looking for a handout, but all looking to codify their own brand of benevolence to those who they believe can’t survive without one. The single unifying trait amongst all of them: The belief that deep down, everyone is really as nice as they are.
Where I lose her every time is that I can see how entitlements trap the recipients in poverty, and she cannot. She still believes that I secretly harbor some survival of the fittest mentality.
I do not associate with people who see no problem in walking into the polling place on election day and voting for big government to confiscate more money... from their friends, neighbors, and even complete strangers... at the point of a gun. I find that kind of behavior profoundly rude and boorish. Anyone who can vote like that is no friend of mine or my family’s, ever. Good riddance to “old friends” and even family members who vote Democrat. No apologies, no regrets. They are my enemies, and I am theirs.
I wasn’t deriding you for it, just felt that it needed to be pointed out. You probably upset yourself more over these encounters than you do anyone else. I don’t think anyone can read your posts and not know that you’re angry at a wide variety of targets.
Back in the olden days we called Kerouac and his crowd "beatniks".
Yep, and certainly was no paleo-conservative, no matter what oblomov says.
So if any of your family or friends are in favor of creating a socialist dictatorship or sending you off to the gas chambers, you still have no problem with that? When an “ideology” means death to our country, then you have to forsake family or friends. You are incredibly naive not to care if they turn you into the authorities when the time comes. Denial is not a river in Egypt.
