President Obama says, "I gave three very clear directives. Number one, make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to." It is clear that he did not issue such a directive, or else the CIA and the military defied him.
Why would our president not come to the defense of our consulate under attack? This is an attack on American soil. This was a 9/11 attack by an al-Qaeda branch in Libya. Therein lies the answer.
Obama does not believe in using the military to defend our national security, which he sees as aggressive, Republican, and cowboy. This was Obama's 9/11, not Bush's. He did not see the attack on our embassy as a jihadi attack on American soil. He saw a group of aggrieved Muslim citizens, with good reason to be angry -- the spontaneous mob enraged by an offensive video. He would follow a Democrat policy of promoting peace, not war, in which avoiding civilian casualties is the paramount goal.
The other answer is directly political. It would be damaging for Obama's already weak record to admit that there was a 9/11 attack by al-Qaeda in one of the supposed successes of the Arab Spring. Responding militarily would have made the weaknesses of Obama's foreign policy all too evident. An American military response would have undercut one of Obama's main campaign slogans: "GM is alive and Osama is dead."

No he didn't. He and his synchophants CLAIMED that it was the video after-the-fact, and they did so only to cover up their inaction.
Obama's view is the same as that of the militant islamofascists - kill the infidels. He chose not to react because he wanted the other team to win. The other team is his team.

Obama didn't provide help because muslims would have died.
Of course, there is also that theory that suggests this was all a staged kidnapping in which Obama planned to become a hero by negotiating a release...and the plan went awry when the kidnapping got out of control and the kidnappers killed the Ambassador. That said, I don't think Valerie Jarrett would let Obama pull a stunt like that, though I wouldn't be surprised if someone suggested it.

This one sounds like the real reason, especially just before the election. The other one (above) sounds like rhetoric.

I don’t buy it. More like a mafia hit that went bad. Maybe Stevens knew way too much about the Libyan version of “fast and furious.”
I respectfully disagree with Karin. Having served in the military for 26 years as a commissioned officer working in certain agencies I submit the following: We now know that this was not a “true” embassy/consulate in Benghazi. This was a CIA led guns/arms running scheme to the rebels in Libya. They used the cover of a “bogus” consulate. Stevens was an integral part of the gun running which put heavy weapons and antiaircraft missiles in the hands of Al Qaeda and other radical Islamists groups. Obama approved the gun/arms running knowing that these heavy weapons could potentially be used against Americans. No assistance was provided to the Americans in Benghazi because if we had gone in with assets like drone strikes or other platforms and killed innocent Libyans, the truth would have come out about our gun running. IMHO.

IIRC, the Cairo embassy screwed up and sent out an apology message about the video tape before the tape's existence was announced and the protests hadn't started yet. I wouldn't be surprised if the Arab Spring flash mobs get their marching orders from Zippy's regime.

I still believe that if he wins a second term, that sometime during that term, he will come out and say he is returning to his Muslin roots. He will say that he just felt it the right thing to do. He will come up with a million excuses and the MSM will just slobber more over his greatness and ability to go back to his cult, Christian and Jew hating religion of murderers.
