CIA Takes Heat for Role in Libya

When the bodies of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans killed in Benghazi, Libya, arrived at Andrews Air Force Base after the Sept. 11 attack, they were greeted by the president, the vice president and the secretaries of state and defense. Conspicuously absent was CIA Director David Petraeus.

Officials close to Mr. Petraeus say he stayed away in an effort to conceal the agency's role in collecting intelligence and providing security in Benghazi. Two of the four men who died that day, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, were former Navy SEAL commandos who were publicly identified as State Department contract security officers, but who actually worked as Central Intelligence Agency contractors, U.S. officials say.

The U.S. effort in Benghazi was at its heart a CIA operation, according to officials briefed on the intelligence. Of the more than 30 American officials evacuated from Benghazi following the deadly assault, only seven worked for the State Department. Nearly all the rest worked for the CIA, under diplomatic cover, which was a principal purpose of the consulate, these officials said.

Here is the fundamental question: Someone gave an order not to assist or attempt to extract Americans under fire when military assets were available. WHO GAVE THE ORDER?

That is the only relevant question at this point. Why they did not give the order ("fog of war", too little information, yada yada yada) or why they covered it up (what we were told, blah-blah-blah.) These are all secondary questions.

All the reasons, rationales and excuses can be given after that answer. There may even be some good ones. Some may indeed be classified. But the answer to this question is not classified. The answer to this question is immaterial to any investigation currently in progress. And the answer to this question has nothing to do with the roles played by State, CIA, or the military in setting up and conducting operations at the Consulate. The answer to this question has nothing to do with what our Ambassador -- or anyone else -- was actually doing there.

The ex-SEAL Dad is the only person asking the right question: "Who gave the order that my son had to die?"

If Dear Leader thinks he's going to throw the CIA under that Canadian-built bus, I want to remind him of some names. Ngô Đình Diệm and Salvador Allende.

The question is, why were we in Libya and Egypt to begin with while ignoring, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey?

Ghadaffi had been a very good boy since 911.
Ahmadinajahd? Not so much.

WHO GAVE THE ORDER?... agreed, that is the question. Just glad to see someone other than Fox and Beck from the media looking into it. The WSJ has never been a HRC fan, so maybe there is hope.

I’m not sure why you bring up Salvador Allende who probably would not have been too popular at FR because of his leftist/socialist slant?

Thanks for the post. AND the follow up thread so folks could get by the WSJ subscribe gottcha.
Perhaps Ernest may want to take action on this one, in due time, if it does not get proper attention, give it a more broad reading at FR.
Have a great upcoming day. Yeah. I'm furious over this whole issue. But run out of words I can use that won't get me permanently banned.

We were in Libya because Ghadaffi had stated most emphatically that he was going to cream the people in Benghazi. Also, Tunisia next door was in revolt, and we were NOT in Egypt. Libya only had a population of about 5 million. Syria has about 25 million and is buddies with Russia. Iran has about 75 million, not quite as many as Egypt with 81 million.

Lebanon if you recall was a real tar baby. President Reagan was forced by public opinion to pull out our peacekeeping force in Lebanon after our embassy was bombed April 1983 killing 63, including about 17 Americans. Then a few months later (October?) the Marine peacekeeper’s barracks was bombed killing 241 US marines. That same day the French were bombed killing over 50 people. Also in the same period a bomb attack on our embassy in Kuwait only killed 6 people because of defective bomb material.

I suspect that Obama thought we, with allies, could help free the people of Libya at a low cost in US lives, and he was successful. Unfortunately, the politics of tribes and cities that suffered and fought is not so easy to settle. You will recall that McCain favored helping Libya too. The tribal/ethnic situation in Lebanon is just as complex in a much smaller space. T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) in his book “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” gives an excellent picture of the fractured nature of the Lebanese population and Arabs in general.

I must say I’m disappointed with Petraeus in all this. Why did he testify to Congresss putting forth the bogus video spontaneous demonstration story when we now know that everybody was informed the day of the attack that Benghazi was an attack by militants? Will we find out the truth in all this after the election? Not likely before...

Ghadaffi was jailing Al Qaeda, Ahmadinajahd was praising them.

Yes, al Qaeda.

Benghazi: A Sea of Al-Qaeda Flags

...and we were NOT in Egypt.

'We' aren't but 0coward's policy was in a big way and so was MoveOn.org.

And how about the Cairo embassy and Sec. State tweeting apologies all day long on Sept. 11th for the 'anti-Muhammed video?' That's not a presence in Egypt?

My take is that Zero received an ultimatum from the Russians that their AQ proxies were going to shut down the gunrunning operation to the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria by force and he'd better not lift a finger to stop it or face WWIII.

Zero caved.

It's just speculation, but it fits. Think of it as a Cuban missile crisis in reverse.
