Apparently, the massive flooding in the subway system will soon extinguish them...

Maybe it will in the subways, but for same in basements that spread to the rest of the building. Similar happened to a town in the Midwest.

In N.O., mostly no basements but fires in flooded buildings were still a major problem.

With the streets flooded, the FD can't get to the fires to put them out.

My wife’s father—at age 62, two bad knees and all—hooked up with a friend who does electrical contracting, drove from North Carolina yesterday, and is currently sitting in a hotel somewhere on Long Island riding Sandy out in the hopes of making some money doing electrical or carpenter cleanup work post-storm. Where some see disaster, others see opportunity. He called about 30 minutes ago, cellphone connection was bad but he said things were OK where he was, no major issues.

You’re being an absolute jerk about it.

“I never said it wasn’t a big rain storm. It’s (or was) a Category 1 (weak) hurricane and everyone wants to run in circles like its never rained before.”

Moron.......

Exactly. I cannot believe any Freeper would be so callous about such an historic tragedy. GeronL, you are disgrace to this community. There, I said it.

Central PA will have it’s fun tomorrow. The storm will be spending all day there.
Probably have it the worst of anyone from this.
Be safe!

I have to wonder how Bernie is doing right now.

I’m in the Syracuse area now.

Friday was a gorgeous day and my son came in from college to put his snow tires on as we initially heard there was supposed to be snow today and tomorrow. It got foggy Fri night and we have had HEAVY fog for days now.

It got a little gusty here earlier this evening and we had some decent rain.

Right now it’s a beautiful, still, warm night with a light, misty rain, almost drizzling.

Go figure.......

Major catastrophe. Markets closed tomorrow and for the foreseeable future. NYC will stink of rotten fish for a month. Worse yet, subway, sewer, water systems all compromised. Electrical damage beyond comprehension. All under ground circuits blown or destroyed.

America faces another 9-11 .

“Hey GeronL, do you hear this? You think it's all “hype” now? Firefighters are risking (and likely losing) their lives to rescue their fellow citizens! Got any good jokes to ease the pain?”

I've already called him a “Genuine Ass” and I double that. I have been through a number of hurricanes, the last one Ike, and these kinds of nature eruptions are always dangerous and in this one, a number of people have already died.

People in these states will be lucky to be alive after it's over and they will face many hardships to rebuild their lives.

Dear God,
Help these people in this dire situation to remain strong and keep them safe.
In Jesus name, Amen.

Also consider all the massive erosion of the soil, concrete infrastructures and concrete foundations underneath New York City.
Just getting to the electrical infrastructure will take weeks because it won't be a simple job of just pumping out the water.
They will have major soil erosion problems and compromised concrete infrastructures and foundations.
Not counting after they do manage to pump the water out that they will some how get backhoes in there and dig their way to the problems areas.
Right now ? the water has no place to go but up, up into the sewers, streets, buildings.... because normally the water would drain out into the ocean and at this time the ocean is coming there way.
Lots of soil will be deposited underneath New York city.
On top of all that is all the human health concerns of sewage all over the place down there... I do not envy at all the people who will have to clean up the mess under New York City.

As long as the power stays up so the sumps don't drown me,
and the wind's not too insane so the trees don't smoosh me,
we'll hunker down on this little hill and muddle thru somehow.

Thanks, and nice set of links on your page, btw !

You two are hilarious! It shows the spectrum of FReepers and how human beings can be when confronted with a disaster.

I hope you re-post that for a third and fourth time. It’s a great monotony breaker.

Sorry, but shouldn’t they know to use the stairs when the risk of electrical outage is high?

No, they don't know anything, they're democRATs.

During Dereco our electric did not come back on until 6 days later.
This situation will be much more difficult for New York city because a lot of their electric infrastructure is under ground.
