Roughly 5 percent of respondents in Reuters/Ipsos polls said they chose the Republican contender in 2008 and will switch to Obama in 2012.
Who are these defectors?
The McCain-to-Obama switchers are 55 percent male, and 34 percent of them are 55 or older. (Overall, Obama trails Romney 34 percent to 52 percent among white men over 50.) About 72 percent of them are white.
They are largely from the East Coast; nearly 4 in 10 live in the mid- or South Atlantic. Nearly 3 in 10 finished their education after high school, and nearly 2 in 10 have a bachelor's degree.
Two-thirds say they are absolutely going to vote, choosing "10" on a 1-10 scale for likelihood of voting.
Even though 38 percent of all voters believe the economy is the election's most prominent issue, just one-third of the McCain defectors agree. Character matters more.

Since ballots are secret, we have to take them at their word for who they voted for in 2008.
A simple lie can shift that computer model just enough to be effective for the cause.
I seriously doubt Obama gained any McCain voters.
You're struggling Gabriel ... you're struggling. LOL.
ANYONE who voted for McCain in '08 didn't believe in the 0 hopey/changey when he didn't have a record, SURELY won't vote for him now when he DOES have such a pathetic record.
al-Reuters pathetically shilling for the occupier-in-chief. EPIC FAIL.
Desperate lame-stream. Pathetic and desperate.
Probably older people who left the work force and are now attached firmly to the government teet.
What Reuters conveniently leaves out is the fact Obama is not anywhere close to winning a majority of the White vote. Without it, he has NO chance of being re-elected.
Then again, where Reuters to include this information, they would have to admit the election is over! But why confuse people with the facts?
A small number of white voters going for Obama doesn’t change in the slightest the direction of this race. Reuters can spin all the fairy tales it wants from now through Election Day but that will never happen!
It does illustrate though, just how deeply the MSM is in the tank for The One.
hahahahhaha.
This is such a bs story it is ridiculous.
No white male who voted McCain is going to say, hmm chee that guy Barry did a great job, let’s go with him.
Har har har. and if they did it is because someone came to their houses with a beat down bat saying “if you know what’s good for you....”
Once in a lifetime is enough for me!
Agree. I too am tired of being force fed candidates by the G.O.P.E.
“Roughly”
“largely”
“nearly”
This story is a hard-hitting load of journalistic crap.
If it were even partly true, what state(s) did McCain win that appear to be trending to Obama in 2012. [I think that answer is zero.]
There’s not one McCain voter that I know that would ever consider voting for Zero. Not one!
Bull$***!
I’m an older white male who voted for McCain (whkle holding my nose) and I’m voting for and working for Romney who, even with his faults, is a DAMN site BETTER than that nasty old weasel John McCain!!!!!
The lies are reflexive at this point.
Maybe the old DEAD ones!
Bump
@GDebenedetti
Hell, I know of eight members of my family (mostly die hard dems to boot) and at least four friends that bought into Obama's bovine excrement last election that aren't voting for him this time around. Actually, I overheard some of them saying that they were voting straight republican ticket this year!!!!
On a side note, I have seen exactly TWO Obama/Biden yard signs in my neighborhood this year and COUNTLESS Romney/Ryan signs. Not scientific, I know but...
The only people who didn’t vote for Obama in ‘08, and will in ‘12, are: those who were 14, 15, 16, and 17 in 2008, and are not just plain stupid, but public school stupid.
This piece should be put in a time capsule to demonstrate to future generations how absurdly and insanely corrupted by ideology the institution of ‘journalism’ became in our time.
Even more remarkable is the fact that this alternate universe, self parodying piece came from a once universally regarded press service, Reuters.
How does one claim that one's education is possibly finished when one votes for 0bama?
AP is an utterly awful newswire. The stories they offer are ideologically driven, and mix editorializing in with the facts.
Reuters is much, much worse. To make a story about FIVE PERCENT of your (usually skewed) sample and try to imply some sort of shift, or trent, is not partisan any more — it is utterly bizarre.
I’ll tell you exactly who those five percent are: They are liberal democrats playing pretend to a pollster.
