Empty Chair Outside Polling Place?

Posted on 10/18/2012 7:50:55 AM PDT by Portcall24

I was thinking about proposing the idea of putting an empty chair outside the polling place with a label on it that says "POTUS". Before proposing to my local Republican group at the next meeting, I thought I would get feedback from my fellow FR'ers. Any thoughts?

I was thinking about dragging an empty chair behind my truck to the polls.

I like that idea, as long as it is just outside of the legal limits of campaign material at the polling place, and that distance varies by state.

If you eliminate the sign, you can place the chair closer.

There are often signs “NO POLLING within 100’” so you might not get within that limit with the sign. What can they do without a sign.

Pretty sure your local GOP folks will not agree--

Such objects are easily considered "electioneering" within the prescribed boundaries for the polling place...

Cool idea... wrong place...
jmho... no offense...

If I did that here, I’d be labeled racist.

But, then this is MA....

Or, put one up with a sign outside the limits, but see if you can stage a few without signs inside, just to see the indignation of the ‘rats as they accuse the existence of a simple, empty chair as “electioneering”.

Depending on the distance from the door to the polling place to where this chair is positioned, it COULD be considered to “electioneering”, prohibited by Florida law.

Electioneering is the attempt to influence or alter voting behavior at or within the polling place. Technically, it applies to threatening action before the entrance intended to discourage “wrong” selections, or discouraging potential voters from even exercising their franchise.

Currently not enforced by the US Department of Just-Us.

No problem, just have a guy in fatigues, dreadlocks, and a beret, while wielding a billy club to guard it.

The Department of Justice will have no problem with that.

Put a sign on the chair that says “Reserved for President Mitt Romney”.

Do it. Just don’t put the POTUS sign on it. They will say it is some kind of campaign sign. Anyone that sees the empty chair will know what it is.

Well that would be blatantly illegal in most areas. Campaign signs; which this would essentially be; don't belong around polling places.

Good idea to put them anywhere else. Leave the electoral process alone however.
