Vice President Joe Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan were the two candidates on stage at Thursdays vice presidential debate, but a third character emerged: Joe Bidens laugh, which didnt escape the notice of tweeting politicos. (And led, of course, to at least three satirical Twitter accounts: Laughing Joe Biden, Biden Smirk, and yet another Laughing Joe Biden.)
Weekly Standards Mark Hemingway: Joe Bidens laughing through talking about Iran sanctions?
TIMEs Michael Scherer: Not sure debate cameras have been light tested for Bidens teeth. Best to watch with sunglasses.
Washington Examiners Philip Klein: Bidens strategy seems to be to laugh at Ryan constantly. Will it work to infantalize Ryan, or backfire like Gore sighing?

Wow I flip on CNN for a second and they have Van Jones giving commentary? Are you f’n kidding me?
Exactly... well said, FlingWingFlyer!
All of the above!
Biden dredged up the S.O.B. story about his wife’s death (at her own hands). He’s long had to give up his LIE that the driver of the truck that killed her was DRUNK. His wife blew a stop sign and was hit by oncoming traffic.
I listened on the radio. Heard his hrumphs and grunts. Heard him overtalking Ryan and then heard the debate “moderator” change the subject mid-answer from Ryan several times.
Biden gave the game away when he jumped on Ryan for daring to mention Kennedy (apparently trying to channel Lloyd Bentsen scolding Dan Quayle). Ryan was merely making the point that keeping tax rates low actually raises revenue when the economy improves and more people are working. Biden shaking his head and muttering “it’s never been done”, despite the abundance of evidence to show that it has, made for a weak counterargument. The “so now you’re Jack Kennedy?” outburst made Biden look small and desperate - but then, his whole performance did that, too.
I was expecting to laugh at his many gaffes but did get that with this debate. I found his laughing creepy, like an actor who learned from a bad instructor.
What I witnessed last night was an embarrassment; it was embarrassing that a man a heartbeat away from running our country acted like that. Biden spent the entire debate smirking, laughing, and interrupting. He interrupted, according to Reince Priebus, 82 times. CNN had an even higher number, apparently.
The strategy Axlerod and the Dems obviously wanted Biden to go in with was to be aggressive and make it seem as though Ryan is young and inexperienced, hence they had him laugh as though everything Ryan was saying was outlandish and ridiculous. The problem is, I think it backfired.
The moderator made her bias clear as she allowed Biden to interrupt. After he would interrupt, she’d let him talk, and then she’d change the subject, not allowing Ryan to respond. Either this or she wouldn’t allow Ryan to respond to certain points Biden would toss out there. Also, I noticed she would press Ryan more on things or ask him for specifics, whereas she would often allow things Biden said to go.
Who won the debate? I was disappinted in Ryan’s performance to a degree. I thought he should have been been a bit more aggressive and countered some of Biden’s arguments/crap better. That said, he held his own, and when your opponent has to resort to smirking, laughing, and interrupting 82 times, then I am going to give the person who acted like an adult the win.
I had to shut it off as well. Besides Joes lies, his laughing and smirking pushed me over the edge.
Glad to see folks noticed the dichotomy between Joes actions/words and the topic. His teeth must glow in the dark - obscenely white for an older man...
Biden’s smarmy laugh is the reason I only watched a 1/2 hour or so of the debate.
After a while it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard.
My only distraction with Ryan is that Eddie Munster bang hanging in the center of his forehead.
And, of course, the irony is that Kennedy was as much a media created fraud as Obummer is.
Stolen for my Facebook page!
Even my daughter, who has absolutely no interest in politics, watched part of the debate and said Biden was very rude and came across as insulting. I wanted to slap him!
Yeah, good one. Biden is everyone’s know-it-all uncle. Unfortunately, Ryan was polite enough to respect the jerk.
But, as many pundits have said, the VP debate, in terms of votes, does not really matter much.
I am really wondering how much the debates matter for the presidential candidates, as well. Was there anyone who tuned in to those debates whose mind was changed by it? I doubt it was more than 100 people.
My guess is that people who tune in to the debates are people who are actually paying attention to what is happening to the country, i.e., people who lean conservatives. A small percentage who tuned in would be Rat voters who just wanted to see their messiah in all his glory.
I have said this before on FR, and perhaps I should be wearing a tinfoil chapeau. For the next debate, I suspect, Obamugabe will be equipped with a hidden earpiece.
When I asked my son why he felt that way, he said because that "old jerk" is acting like Ryan has nothing worth listening too but he (Ryan) is right about a lot of stuff.
I was beaming with pride for my son last night.....but them again I'm always proud of him but especially so last night.
Odd that anyone on the left would frown on this.
It has been a favorite tactic of Alinsky’s for several decades, that of simply laughing at your opponent when you have no counter-argument. It is part of his ‘isolate and ridicule’ approach in trying to gain support of the weaker argument. Who wants to be considered part of the group being ridiculed? Of course, it is nothing more than an ad hominem attack and logically fallacious for that reason.
Luckily, most of us conservatives are thick-skinned enough and independent-minded enough that we wear their ridiculing laugh as a sign of defeat and therefore as a badge of honor.
Sounds like a smart kid!
