No word yet on what the violation was, but I assume it must be far more serious than using an alias or a computer. Given the insanity of the past two weeks, replete with the White House nudging Google to pull the video off of YouTube and the State Department running ads on Pakistani TV to apologize for a movie they had nothing to do with, I can’t quite believe the DOJ would risk the perception that they’re punishing this guy for a thoughtcrime unless something serious was involved. There has to be a real crime underlying this. Right?
The California man behind a crudely produced anti-Islamic video that has inflamed parts of the Middle East was arrested Thursday for violating terms of his probation, authorities said.
[The filmmaker] has been on probation for a 2010 federal check fraud conviction that brought a 21-month prison sentence. Under terms of his probation, he was not to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer…
A U.S. District Court hearing was scheduled for [him] on Thursday afternoon. It was closed to media and the public.
Meanwhile, new from Fox News:
Two weeks after the killing of a U.S. ambassador in Libya — an attack the Obama administration blamed in part on an online video mocking the prophet Muhammad — a majority of likely voters thinks the first thing a president should do in such situations is stand up for free speech, and not criticize how Americans exercise their First Amendment rights.
A Fox News poll released Thursday finds 61 percent of voters think the president of the United States should stand up for freedom of speech, even if its offensive, while 22 percent say the president should condemn offensive speech if it might provoke Islamic violence.
Those 22 percent know something important that the 61 percent don’t, namely, that the future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. And if we occasionally have to haul a guy in on a probation violation to ensure that the future doesn’t belong to him, hey. Exit quotation from our new kinda sorta ally in Egypt: Egypt respects freedom of expression … [but] not a freedom of expression that targets a specific religion or a specific culture.
Update: In order to prove that it’s evenhanded about blasphemy, Egypt’s gone ahead and arrested a Muslim cleric for burning a copy of the Bible. Note to The One: If you want to show the Middle East that American free-speech principles are not, in fact, an anti-Muslim plot and apply even to people who insult the faith of most Americans, this is a fine opportunity. Speak up in this guy’s favor.
Update: According to TMZ, the guy’s probation report is sealed. Question for criminal defense attorneys: Is there any way to force it to be unsealed, or is that at the discretion of one or both of the parties? There’s a public interest at this point, I think, in knowing why they’re sending him back to prison. Did he commit a serious crime that we don’t know about, or are they using a technicality to punish him for blasphemy?
Nakoula pleaded no contest in 2010 to federal bank fraud charges in California and was ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 21 months in federal prison.
He was released in June 2011
(so sometime in 2010 he went to jail.. and was let out in june... plus 21 months for 3/4s of a million bucks? wow! He’d be in jail still if I was the judge)
As to the violation of probation? I can only guess.. didn’t make the restitution payment?
Nothing can be his fault.
Evah.
Political prisoner in the civil war. The Constitution and Bill of Rights are suspended. The civil war actions are in full force, yet the shooting has not started in earnest. The Obama camp will launch the first rockets and fire the bullets against freedom in October-November. Surprise!! wink, wink!
Walid Shoebat says this guy is a muslim that has been involved with his terrorist brother for a decade in shady operations.
He won’t last very long in the jail house.
Will he come out dead or alive? Or will he even ever come out at all?
If the Feds had not found the probation violation, they would have conveniently and timely found 3 handguns and knives in his kid’s back pack inside the school, drugs in his wife’s SUV, child porn on his computer and some freshly planted marijuana plants in his fenced-in back yard.
Question is, did he use a computer or the internet? If he did, did he get permission from his probation officer?
I am willing to defend the guy if he's in the right. If he has broken probation, then I can't defend him.
People are coming forward that took part in the video production. Some of them aren't happy, because the edits he made in post production, did not conform with the type of video these people thought they were making. At least, that's what some of them are saying.
After viewing the video, I have to say it's very poorly done. And if he wants to make a very poor video, it's a free country. (well sorta)
I don't have a problem with him making a poor video slamming anyone. I may disagree with him if it targets some people unfairly. If he's just telling the truth, then he has every right to do so.
What we do not need, is Obambi sticking his nose in where it doesn't belong. None of us needs his interpretation of anything. He's an idiot.
To be honest, I don't see this video any more insulting that Mooshell's "Eat what I tell you dammit, videos."
It’s still my opinion that the film (trailer, not a whole film) was setup by the administration. Once the Jew or Coptic Christian story started falling apart, they had to get him out of public and tucked away where he couldn’t talk and his past activities and actions investigated. Eric the Corrupt will grab all his financial records and everything else and lock them up for the foreseeable future. I wouldn’t be surprised that he doesn’t die quickly while in custody or shortly after being returned to Federal Prison.
Thanks SeekAndFind.
Poor bastard got Honkified by the White House..
He flipped and turned govt informant.
Of course they do. They can’t allow him to talk to anyone.
Producer Of Anti-Islam Film Was Fed Snitch
L.A. man began cooperating after 2009 fraud bust
Interesting that Nakoula's websites track back to connections with 0bama.
Proof Positive - In My Opinion (who created Innocence of Muslims)(Obama)
Interesting that Nakoula was partners with another Fed stooge, a palestinian Muslim.
Why is the Coptic Christian filmmaker partners in crime with Coptic Christian hater?
There were four versions of the film. Did Nakoula make the final one? Did he dub in the final version’s dialogue?
I heard today on the radio that the judge had ordered that he stay away from computers and not go online. I guess it was a life sentence without the chance of a log on. Since I heard it on the news, I'm taking it with a grain of salt. I really don't trust anything I hear from the "media". This excuse to throw the guy in jail for "probation violation" probably came from the White House in hopes of calming down the rabid muzzies. JMO
Arresting political dissidents on real but petty violations is a hallmark of Soviet regimes.
“I cant quite believe the DOJ would risk the perception that theyre punishing this guy for a thoughtcrime unless something serious was involved.”
Are you kidding me?
