A Mississippi man has taken his wife's last name after the ACLU complained he was told by state officials that he would need a court order to do so because it was not traditional.

I completely understand.

I have expounded on what I regard as a gender-neutral family naming convention for some hypothetical society.
Stop me if you have heard this before....
OK, nobody stopped me, so here it is.
Everyone carries a dual surname, like this: surname1-surname2; however the order of surnames differs depending on the sex of the children.
Boys take Father’s surname1 then Mother’s surname1; girls take the same names in the opposite order.
When either sex marries, they keep their surname1, which commemorates their same-sex lineage, but discard their original surname2, taking on the surname1 of their spouse.
So, if there is a family whose dad is named “Smith-Jones,” the mom carries the surname “Jones-Smith.” Each child carries the same surname, in the same order, as the parent of the same sex.
Before the Smith-Joneses were married, the groom’s surname was Smith-Wojohowicz, and the bride’s name was Jones-Mogumbo. This indicates that the groom’s matrilineal line is the house of Wojohowicz, and the bride’s patrilineal line is the house of Mogumbo, neither of which name is passed on to their offspring.
Notice that there is still a bit of gender bias lurking in my description. When speaking of the family rather than about any specific member, I used the male-lineage-first form of the family name. I have not figured out any way to make such a reference completely gender neutral.
Oh, and yes-—same-sex marriages completely screw with this concept.
And Adolph's dad had earlier changed the family name from "Schickelgruber" to "Hiedler," although the parish clerk misheard it and wrote down "Hitler."
English has a number of these.
I thought Wodehouse was joking when he wrote that featherstonhaugh was pronounced “fanshaw”, but he’s right!

LMAO! Where do you freepers come up wiht this stuff!!
Well, for them it wasn’t an issue. The kids where given the hyphenated name. I supposed it could be a problem sometime, but right now they are at about 35 years together.
Their boy did get married and his wife just took the hyphenated name as her last name.
Their daughter has a professional career and uses her maiden name there because that’s what her degree is and she took her husbands name for everyday. (I think that is not uncommon)
For me personally it was easy, my maiden name is common, my husband’s last name is not. I dropped my middle name which I can not stand and made my maiden name my middle name (I think that is pretty common as well).
A friend of our family, came from a family of five kids and they all have different last names, not different fathers just last names. Her mom told me there are lots of really interesting last names so why not use them.
I agree a single last name shows unity.
A coworker of my husband remarried after her husband died and she just made that last name her middle name.
I ok, those are all the scenarios I know, you are also correct it could be so complicate your head could explode.
Understood. Sorry to hear about that.
So he goes by Miss Man now?
I’m guessing there’s a sex change operation in the near future for “one” of the spouses in this marriage. I wonder which one it’ll be...hmmmm.
Well, how about that?
Sounds like a real sweetie who clearly and dearly loves his wife.
:)
“A coworker of my husband remarried after her husband died and she just made that last name her middle name.”
As you are probably aware, my grand parents recently adopted a boy and girl. The girls name was Amber Nicole Lindsey, she wanted to keep Lindsey as a middle name and drop the Nicole, becoming Amber Lindsey (redacted), which is a fine middle name but gramps was very specific - NO hyphen between Lindsey and (redacted) or his lawyer would pay whatever it cost to get rid of the hyphen.
No birth certificates yet but they have been applied for. Got to give them time, after all, this is Illinois government they are dealing with and it’s only been 4 months since it was applied for.
My name, I recently learned, is not really my name. What to do?
I think the story is wonderful and sorta funny your new aunt and uncle are younger than you ;-)
I’ve called them aunt and uncle but they don’t like it, so I stopped.
Haven’t seen your name in a while!!
I’m spending a couple of weeks recuperating from an encounter between me and a horse. The horse won and I have a cast on my leg. The horse is still laughing.
I knew a guy that changed his name from Frank Shitsplasher to George Shitsplasher.
Gramps will take care of you. Good to hear from you. Get well Soon.
