MIAMI -- One year after the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that barred openly gay and lesbian service members from serving in the military, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) said in an interview with WPTV NewsChannel 5 that the controversial policy should not be reinstated.
"Now that it's done, we should not reverse it," Ryan told WPTV NewsChannel 5 during a visit to Miami. "I think that would be a step in the wrong direction because people have already disclosed themselves."
Ryan was one of 160 Republicans and 15 Democrats in the House of Representatives to vote against the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" in 2010.
"I talked to a lot of good friends of mine who are combat leaders in the theater and they just didn't think the timing of this was right to do this when our troops were in the middle of harm's way in combat," Ryan said. "I think this issue is past us. It's done. And, I think we need to move on."
The comment came after progressive groups criticized Ryan, the candidate for vice president, for an appearance at the 2012 Values Voters Summit and accused him of being "out of step" with the views of young Americans.

I am amazed that these cowards pretend to represent us. Obama goes full gay marriage, and the GOP obliges by retreating as usual. All they do on social issues is try and fail to hold ground, never attack, never advance, never force the enemy to react. Wars, culture or otherwise are never won like that.
I suspect right now Ryan is throwing a nerf football against the wall over the bad call at the end of the Packers game.
because they never agreed with us on any of those issues, they just used those issues to get our votes, with no intention of ever actually doing anything to stop this kind of thing.
we are all being played for suckers.
and now we are stuck with this Romney putz who’s going to insure Obama gets re-elected.
Please go out and vote for the candidate who supports 3-parent families then.
OMG!! How DEMORALIZING can you get???
Unbelievable.
I can’t even quite get my head wrapped around this. If you have the power to try and change something that is wrong, and you don’t try, then I have to question if you ever thought it was wrong in the first place.
Going back to DADT is the WRONG direction? This ticket is driving me insane.
Romney’s lap dog has been muzzled and neutered.
So does that go for Obamacare as well? Lower taxes and less spending in Sodom and Gomorrah is not my idea of a conservative victory.
This truly sickens me...
Ryan was the reason I could vote for mittens...
End times for sure.
Its frustrating. R&R are good on economy, good on foreign affairs but the moral values crowd is told to go pound sand as always. Notice how not a single Democrat running for national or statewide office is actually pro returning to DADT (not that DADT was conservative to begin with).
Dunno what the problem is. Plenty of Freepers said principles don’t matter. So it’s OK. But if the Dems do it...well THEN it’s a problem.
THANKS FOR NOTHIN’ GUYS!
If I were him, my answer would be it’s up to the military commanders to decide what the policy should be to create the best military effectiveness and he will support their decision. I thought we had agreed that the military knew how to run itself better than civilians in Washington D.C. It’s a good political answer, because it punts the decision to the military. But I think it’s the right answer too. Conservative principles dictate that you let decisions be made at the local level or the people closest to knowing the ground truth of the situation.
Even if it’s true that the commanders told him they don’t want the policy reversed, he shouldn’t go all the way out on the limb to say “it’s done” for good. There hasn’t been enough time to evaluate how the change in policy has affected military readiness, for one thing.
It’s the MORAL issues that have gotten us to this point....Oh God help us.

Answer to your question - they don’t really see anything wrong with DADT repeal. They had to vote with GOP to cover their butts, but they are not about to expand an ounce of political capital to advance morality.
Sigh.
This is a culture war that is near to bullets and Ryan knows it. Lets get rid of Obama and we’ll fight the next battle. Ryan is a sharp cookie and a great VP pick. The homo issue is a distraction the Marxists would love to make us focus on. It’s one of thousands but the Marxists know how much media traction it would get and Ryan did not take their bait.
If Obama wins the election, we’ll all see a rollback on homosexual “rights” and feminism such as won’t be believed as his Islamism kicks in. Our whole way of life will become very different very soon.
