Muslim-led nations seek ban on insult
As the U.N. General Assembly convenes this week in New York, several leaders of mostly Muslim nations are suggesting that the world body consider sanctions on blasphemy, amid widespread protests against an amateur movie that denigrates Islams Prophet Muhammad.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he will focus at least part of his remarks on the film when he addresses the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday.
I am the prime minister of a nation, of which most are Muslims, that has declared anti-Semitism a crime against humanity. But the West hasnt recognized Islamophobia as a crime against humanity. It has encouraged it, Mr. Erdogan told reporters last week.
Turkey heads the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, a body of 57 nations, which has long pushed for a U.N. resolution condemning the defamation of religion.
Nonbinding versions of the resolution have been adopted, but the effort was crushed last year by religious groups and human rights activists who argued that it represented a dangerous step toward an international law against free speech.
The debate has been reignited by Innocence of Muslims, a crudely produced film made in the United States that has sparked fury in the Muslim world. Protesters have breached the walls at U.S. embassies and desecrated American flags in sometimes violent demonstrations. A protest in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi ended with the deaths of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton appealed Monday to Muslims to show dignity and not resort to violence as they protest the film, the Associated Press reported.
Dignity does not come from avenging insults, especially with violence that can never be justified, Mrs. Clinton said at her husbands Clinton Global Initiative.

That is nice that you have done that, and I respect it. But not only have we not made Islamophobia illegal, we also haven't made anti-Semetism illegal either. We are both consistent, but the prime minister is asking for inconsistency.
Does this clown not realize that when the Moslems say that Jesus Christ was just another of the honored prophets in the Bible that they are saying one of the most blasphemous things it is possible to say to believing Christians?
And what can any Christian consider Mohammed to be other than one of the false prophets the Bible warms about?
There would be no end to the examples of blasphemy that those of different religions could claim concerning the beliefs of other faiths.
Best to require tolerance from all, including the Moslems, than to start down the road demanded by them.
We have yet to play Cowboys and Islamists. It will get interesting.
Good news, Allah called, he said “oops”
Because then I will make sure I make the most offensive antiIslam artistic piece possible.
And myself and about 2 million of my closest friends will wait for the UN.
Whaddya think about gay porn featuring Mohammad as the receiver? I think it would sell!
The profit Mr Mohamed is dead. He started a horrible corrupting pyramid scheme. A consuming cancer masked by traitors, wolves in sheep skins. POTUS is one of them.
Lord give us strength against this evilness.
Can of worms they don’t want to open. Sanctions against blasphemy against islam requires the same against all religions.
Can you impagine the UN in the position of protecting not just major religions but every little cult and primitive nature religion across the world!
Considering that it is BLASPHEMY to insist that Jesus, God-the-Son, is only a prophet... WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD MUSLIMS WANT THAT?
What a bunch of wimps...and the truth about their religion is not insulting...it is painful! dummies.
Let’s wait till Erdogan apologizes for the early 20th century
massacres of Armenians.

Great article DogByte will add it to my semi-complete list. Thanks for posting it.
Well said. Obama and Clinton support UN Resolution 16/18. They’re introducing Sharia should they dare sign it. We’ve already got microfinance...compliant with Islamic Law.

We know the extremes of accusing Jews as a group of being something or the other is the definition of anti-semitism
But, and to answer the claim by the Turkish PM -- what if there was a movie that insulted Moses and or the other prophets? What if one insulted God?
In my mind that would be anti-semitic, just as "life of brian" is anti-Christian. But should these be banned? What do you think?
Also, I've been reading the Paki newspapers where many Moslems seem to think that discussing the holocaust is banned in the West. I've put them correct that it's not the discussion, but the denial of facts which is banned. But I'm also pretty hazy on the exact laws
