Monsanto Roundup weedkiller and GM maize implicated in ‘shocking’ new cancer study
The Grocer UK ^ | Septembe 19, 2012 | Elinor Zuke

The world’s best-selling weedkiller, and a genetically modified maize resistant to it, can cause tumours, multiple organ damage and lead to premature death, new research published today reveals.

In the first ever study to examine the long-term effects of Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller, or the NK603 Roundup-resistant GM maize also developed by Monsanto, scientists found that rats exposed to even the smallest amounts, developed mammary tumours and severe liver and kidney damage as early as four months in males, and seven months for females, compared with 23 and 14 months respectively for a control group.

“This research shows an extraordinary number of tumours developing earlier and more aggressively -particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts,” said Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist at King’s College London

...GM crops have been approved for human consumption on the basis of 90-day animal feeding trials. But three months is the equivalent of late adolescence in rats, who can live for almost two years (700 days), and there have long been calls to study the effects over the course of a lifetime.

“Don’t eat GMO corn or soy”

Do not eat GMO corn and do not eat soy of any kind.Soy is bad. Period, unless it is fermented, and in moderation.

"That being said, I use Roundup on the weeds in the alley and vinegar on the weeds in the play area."

I've considered trying a vinegar-water mix to lower pH in garden soil a little (to counter alkali by about 1). Think that'd work?

“and it grew up on such organophosphates. “

Let's hope. They are nasty substances; I do think there is a possibility of some side effects as a result of exposure to them. But only to those of us who may have been users of the products.

I would do it again however if still farming and they were needed.
The BT corn is a much better way to go. Much safer to all. But I would guess BT resistance will be a problem for the technology.

This study is bogus and was done by a group opposed to GM food and sponsored by groups like Greenpeace and Friends of Earth. It was specifically timed for a release to support the lefties in California on the GM labeling issue. The study is so flawed, even the NYTimes has a story on how other scientists question the validity and motives of this anti-GM research group. I am amazed over the years how Greenpeace and Friends of Earth advocates have infiltrated FR.

Vinegar is probably pretty weak. Maybe this would help:

“I am amazed over the years how Greenpeace and Friends of Earth advocates have infiltrated FR.”

They have no science background (or desire to learn in a disciplined way) would be my guess.

Actually, they been around for commercial consumption for 17 years, being on sale beginning in 1995. One thing I laugh about is all the whinging about GM tomatoes...I don’t think there are any on the market. Once there was the “Flavor-Saver” or some name like that, that stayed fresh and wouldn’t rot...but the problem was that it didn’t taste that great, and was a commercial failure. As far as I know, there haven’t been any GM tomatoes on the market for over 10 years.

I think when it comes to vegetables what matters is “time to market”, so that is why the local farmers’ markets and roadside stands always have the best tasting vegetables, especially with tomatoes and corn.

You don't believe that organic farmers are allowed to spray Bt on their crops? Then you are very ignorant of the facts.. Just go to the organic websites and see which pesticides are allowed to be used on crops....Bt is one, sulfur is another. I think you might be a Greenpeace or Friends of Earth troll.

I think it might take too much of it to affect the soil.

I predict there will be a time when we will wish we had any kind of food, GM or not.

I wish I didn’t think so.

If we were all eating the corn that God put on this earth before man improved on it we wouldn’t have the obesity problem every one keeps talking about. ;-)

Why do you say that??

Sorry Jeff,
I don’t go to the movies, nor do I watch TV.
I am sure this is supposed to be funny.

Just keep eating it and let those of us who disagree not “indulge”.

Work for you?

Calling me silly doesn't prove the figures wrong and I notice you don't have anything to offer contrary to what I wrote.

So what exactly has the U.S life expectancy been doing over the past decade? and “Puhleese!” do share your source.

Led by Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini, the researchers studied 10 groups, each containing 10 male and 10 female rats, over their normal lifetime. Three groups were given Roundup – developed by Monstanto – in their drinking water at three different levels consistent with exposure through the food chain from crops sprayed with the herbicide.

What I'd like to know is if the doses were adjusted for body weight. Lab rats weigh about 1 lb. If you fed a rat a 2000 calorie human diet, it would die on the first day, because it only needs 60. If you made a rat drink 8 glasses of water per day, it would die of excessive water consumption on the first day.

God makes corn just fine.

Great bumper sticker material; however, I think if you looked at primitive maize, tasted some of the wild corn cousins, and looked at productivity per acre of primitive, you might rethink that statement.

Though GM foods may be controversial, modern agriculture techniques including plant breeding have improved many crops and increased crop yields; US farmers used to feed the world and likely still do.

The benefits of modern herbicides and GM crops are without question, but this stuff sure makes you wonder.

the one bright side to this is that I can't think of a better company to suffer the monetary losses if this turns out to be absolute and true. Monsanto is nothing but downright evil. Their goal has been to destroy anyone and everyone who refuses to play the game and they have been winning the battle. Now we find out their product is dangerous... hopefully the tables turn on them and they are eventually destroyed.
