Here Are The 47% Of The Population Who Don't Pay Federal Income Tax (See Chart)
Business Insider ^ | 09/18/2012 | Joe Weisenthal

Mitt Romney's latest campaign setback is a leaked video that shows him slagging the 47 percent of the population who, he says, will always vote for Barack Obama, because they want everything for free from the government.

The 47 percent number presumably refers to the percent of the population who don't pay Federal Income Taxes, which of course is just one kind of tax.

From the Tax Policy Center, these three pie charts show who those people are.

Kevin Roose at NYMag puts the data into words:

But back to the 47 percent. There are two primary ways to pay no (or negative) federal income taxes. The first is to be poor, and the second is to be elderly. In 2011, of the 18.1 percent of American households who paid no federal tax (meaning, no federal income or payroll tax), more than half were elderly, and most of the other half were non-elderly people making below $20,000 a year. The other sliver, roughly one in 20 non-payers, were people who made more than $20,000 in household income.

The reason being poor helps is because, with a combination of tax credits (like the earned income credit and the child credit) and deductions, many people earning under $20,000 a year can zero out their overall rate. The primary reason being elderly helps is that Social Security benefits aren't taxed as income, so if all (or most) of your income comes from your monthly Social Security check, your taxable income is marginal or non-existent.

So there you have it. The poor and elderly.

Aren’t there tax credits that would allow some of these people to get back other peoples money even if they have no tax liability of their own?

You are not supposed to view the article factually. You are supposed to be stampeded by the rhetoric. Thank you for telling us the facts. The MSM never will.

RE :”I still believe the Rove/GOPe did him in.

Funny you should mention that.

One of the gym TVs is set to PBS and last night lib Bill Moyer show was on and he had a guest who outlined how Karl Rove was behind the scenes smearing Romney's 2012 primary opponents Santurum etc.

My google says it was Craig Unger who wrote “BOSS ROVE: Inside Karl Rove’s Secret Kingdom of Power.”

That was just last night(I think it was last Friday's show).

Naturally this is popular with the Dem outlets, you will never see it on the Republican channel as Rove is a big shot there.

And 53% pay BOTH income tax AND social security tax!! That means the 53% are contributing even more to carry the others!

Are the 53% sending their kids to public schools that the 47% also support.

How many of the 53% are tapping into Medicaid and foodstamps and other government handouts -- but they pay their federal income taxes on them???

Get real.

I will say this. I don’t believe any of us is required to trash ourselves in public with regard to some of our former behavior.

I believe that a withdrawal is proper. His obligation is to his family at that point. Washing dirty laundry in public is going to hurt them more. It’s not necessary.

If he’s going to continue to run, then I do believe he has to come clean.

There you go again. No numbers or statistics. Individual hard luck storie aside, just unvalidated claims. The numbers are there You can see them in Obamas numbers When you cast your vote for Obama, will you absentee or take actual time to go vote?

All it takes is the appointment of one Rove in your administration, and it can be ruined from there on out.

A guy like Bush is only going to be as good as the people who surround him. He wasn’t a brain trust (IMO), or what I would call his own man. I think he relied on others. And when it came to Rove, I think he listened too much.

When I considered his time with the Texas Rangers, I found it very hard to believe he was the managing partner.

The guy just doesn’t wreak of leadership to me. Contributing partner, much more plausible...

Of course that is not what I said either.

The quote at the top of my reply was of the Freeper to whom I replied.

Having said that I was trying to illustrate that there are some people within that 47% who are not slackers and will likely vote for Romney.

There are many retirees who live off investment income and social security and incur no tax liablility, as in my example of tax exempt interest from Municipal bonds.

The bigger a deal Ubama makes of this, the deeper the hole he digs for himself.

I almost feel sorry for the Left. Every dirty trick they come up with lately blows up in their faces.

Just kidding about the feeling sorry part.

Individual hard luck storie aside

Those individual hard luck stories make up a large part of the independent electorate and won't be easily pushed aside.

RE:”All it takes is the appointment of one Rove in your administration,..

That is another reason why I am not going to sweat this election. Rove picked Romney and he (rove) is the evil Republican genius puppet master, let him get Romney elected.

If he fails he will look pretty stupid.

And W had one.

He was a figurehead at the Rangers.

I watch FoxNews, but I find myself wincing as much as smiling. They really enable the Left at times.

They have some great people on, and some terrible people on, and I haven’t even addressed the “OUT” dem operatives yet.

I find that I can get all the news from FR, and the UK Telegraph, and maybe a couple of others. I find it too hard to watch fools on TV.(Not you, Cavuto)
