McDonald's new menu item: Calorie counts [follows Supreme Ct. ruling upholding ObamaCare]
Houston Chronicle ^ | September 12, 2012

McDonald's restaurants across the country will soon get a new menu addition: The number of calories in the chain's burgers and fries.

The world's biggest hamburger chain said Wednesday that it will post calorie information on restaurant and drive-thru menus nationwide starting Monday. The move comes ahead of a regulation that could require major chains to post the information as early as next year.

"We want to voluntarily do this," said Jan Fields, president of McDonald's USA. "We believe it will help educate customers."

In cities such as New York and Philadelphia where posting calorie information is already required, however, Fields notes that the information has not changed what customers choose to order.

"When it's all said and done, the menu mix doesn't change," she said. "But I do think people feel better knowing this information."

The decision to post calorie information follows the Supreme Court's decision this summer to uphold President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, which includes a regulation that would require restaurant chains with more than 20 locations to post calorie information. The timetable for carrying out that requirement has yet to be worked out........

As someone who is very fit/health consious I don't have a problem with this. Saw the new boards listing the cal. at the McDees drive thru this morning while getting my oatmeal. It's no big deal.

Oh man. That's a 3-palmer...

This regulation would still have been permissible prior to the SCOTUS ruling on Obamacare. Wickard and Raich are still in force. Roberts' opinion left them completely intact.

Fedgov can and will impose these kinds of nanny state rules under the current expansive view of Commerce Clause.

I believe McDonald's is doing this as REPAYMENT to the Obama administration for the original WAIVER they received, as a corporation,

This happened in Sept of 2010... or has everyone forgotten they were made somewhat exempt from obamacare..

McDonald's, 29 other firms get health care coverage waivers

Even the salads with chicken strips are high-calorie. Anyone keeping track of the news would know that, however, so again, calorie counts are superfluous.

Not true. Counting calories alone is not helpful but knowing how much is fat, sugar and protein does make a big difference. It helps me make choices for my sons. One needs more protein and fats the other less sugar and fat.

How could more information be considered superfluous?

It’s called “junk food” for a reason. Calorie counts are superfluous. Only a numbskull would think this stuff is good for you. Even the salads with chicken strips are high-calorie. Anyone keeping track of the news would know that, however, so again, calorie counts are superfluous.

Not all Mcdees is junk food and you can tailor the food so it is healthy. The Southwest grilled chicken salad for instance is only 290 cal with the chicken strips and I eat it w/o salad dressing.

Oh man. That's a 3-palmer...

What is so facepalm? Their oatmeal is fairly nutritious and I also get 2 scrambled eggs with it..Great protein...

Don't eat at Mcdee often but when I do I try to make it as nutritious as I can

I post on the largest body building site in the world-6 million forum members worldwide and I can tell you 99% of the people still figure daily calorie calculations in their daily meal program but we go one step further and figure out the good cals vs the bad ones along with protein/good carbs and good fat calculations.

Why calorie counting is decreasing in importance in diet programs is because most people are ignorant and under calculate what they are actually eating or don't have the discipline to keep track of everything they eat on a daily basis.

hey tolerance you do know small mom and pop restaurants are exempt from this ruling don't you and many large restaurants have already been posting calorie info on their menues for years now????

Not everything the gov't mandates is bad or wrong.. 35+ years ago before the federal pension vesting rules, co's would fire people a few months shy of their retirement date so they would not have to pay out the pension. No we have vesting rules regarding pensions. My grandfather was in the pension business and saw this happen.

Many people including (gasp)conservatives look at food labels(calories/protein/sodium) in stores when making food choices and are glad it is labeled and use the information.

The article stated that McDonlad’s was listing the caloric value of their menu offering in advance of a GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENT TO DO SO. Your post implied support for that idea by equating opposition to the mandate to ostracizing a healthy lifestyle. That is nanny statism, pure and simple.

It wasn't an implication. I stated it as fact. Here on FR there are great many people who DO equate anything anyone says about being healthy as a) a personal attack b) desiring a nanny state c) or, trying to tell other people what they should and shouldn't do.

I am advocating nor doing any of those. I advocate a healthy lifestyle for the health of it. I HAVE been ostracized in the past for doing so. Just like the responses I have seen to "trailhkr1" on this thread and others.

hey tolerance

Always nice to make personal insults. It really helps you make your point.

you do know small mom and pop restaurants are exempt from this ruling don't you and many large restaurants have already been posting calorie info on their menues for years now????

Some bureaucrat decided what constitutes a "mom and pop" restaurant. Will you refrain from eating there because they don't post calories"????" For Pete's sake, if you're an avid calorie-counter, you can figure it out for yourself pretty damned close.

Look. It's great that you appreciate it. But that doesn't justify the government's imposing another expense, another burden on doing business. If, as you say, many restaurants were already doing so voluntarily, then why should it be made mandatory?

It reminds me of the smoking laws. I suspect [but certainly don't know] that you heartily approve of those, too. But your approval does not, in my opinion, justify the use of government force to dictate what people may do with their own property.

If enough people wanted to know the calorie counts of the food they were ordering at a restaurant, everyone would do it without compulsion.

There is a growing sentiment in this country that if I like something, then the government should help me get it by forcing someone else to do it under penalty of losing their government permission to conduct business.

As for calorie-counting vs. eating the right foods (which is different for everyone,) have at it. Maybe I can get Congress to make it illegal to display calorie counts because it's become stylish to consider that an outmoded method for losing or maintaining weight.

And don't think it couldn't happen. Once we've allowed government to make such decisions, it will use that power over and over in a completely arbitrary and capricious fashion.
