If Chicago public school teachers strike, public education could be undermined
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | August 30, 2012 | Mary Mitchell

Maybe CTU President Karen Lewis is just rattling her saber by announcing the teachers union has filed a 10-day notice of intent to strike.

....Parents with children in Chicago Public Schools should definitely be putting together an alternative plan given the rhetoric from the union.

“CPS seems determined to have a toxic relationship with its employees,” Lewis said at the news conference. “[T]hey attempted to ram a poorly-thought-out longer school day down our throats . . . It has been insult after insult after insult.”

Now that Lewis has taken the next step toward a showdown, I’m betting there will be drama.

But a strike would not just be devastating for the mayor, teachers, students and parents.

A strike could further undermine public education in this city.

Chicagoans are fed up.

They are fed up with high gas prices and boarded-up homes. They are fed up with rowdy teens, gangs, shootings and homicides. They are fed up with schools that warehouse kids but don’t educate them.

....Increasingly, parents in these struggling communities are discovering options to public education.

That is why thousands lined up to attend the “New Schools for Chicago” fair last spring — desperate to send their kids to a “charter operation.”

The children who are being left behind are the most vulnerable.

So if Mayor Rahm Emanuel has to skip most of the Democratic National Convention next week, then so be it.....

Who wants a strike? Nobody wants a strike,” said Andrea Parker, a teacher at Curtis Elementary School on the South Side. “I support better education for our children and right now our children aren’t receiving the best education,” she said.

Are you saying you aren't doing your job effectively, Andrea Parker? Good thing, for you, that your job is secure irrespective of performance.

Anyway, I'm sure the inmates, er ... students, want a strike.

As a newly minted BSME, I took a job starting up power plants. I remember a union plant in Arizona in 1975 where I had to make a simple adjustment to a coal pulverizer and I had to arrange SIX trades to get this ten minute job done. I had a carpenter to lay the planks of the scaffold (3 ft off the floor), a pipefitter to break one pipe connection, a millwright to align a coupling, an electrician to "rig" the work light, a boilermaker (just because the pulverizer fed fuel to the boiler, I guess), and a laborer to sweep up. For 90% of the hour I spent on that adjustment, they just sat around and did nothing. That was right about the time in life I realized how the world truly worked and I became a conservative.

If the teachers go away, the kids might get smarter.

IIRC, there was a time — back in the ‘70s, maybe — whe doctors in some country (India?) went on strike. The mortality rate went DOWN.

I’m confused. How does useless teachers shutting down worthless schools undermine public education? I’d think public education would be undermined more by having useless teachers being paid to do nothing in public schooks that do not teach anything.

What do I know? I homeschooled my kids. (Two are now engineers and the third is in engineering college.)

Nobody in the public sector should be allowed to be unionized.

Eliminate the teachers unions and the problems start to solve themselves as teachers are paid on merit or lack thereof. Teachers not performing would be fired and the unions wouldn’t be spending millions collected from teachers who are paid by taxpayers to support the Democrat party and its candidates.

Chicago’s aldermen are like little corrupt mayors - each with their creepy control freak fiefdoms... Yeah, they’ll keep the status quo going...

Yes, the brainwashing propaganda machine can’t warp little minds if the “teachers” go on strike.

A college friend of mine worked at the AM General plant in South Bend back around 1980 as a summer job. He was assembling doors on military trucks being shipped to China. He could easily punch out 25-30 doors a shift, and was doing so.... Until the shop steward gave him a pointed talk about being a “rate buster” and telling him he was showing up all the other guys on the line. The steward told him the quota was 10 doors and he needed to stick to it.

Since we all liked to party back then, my friend figured he’s stay out late, come in to work, put together his 10 doors by mid-morning, and then head to the roof for an afternoon nap.

Now the plant is closed and the Chinese are selling us stuff we used to make.

Unions are a cancer.

Condeleeza Rice spoke about the sad state of public school education in her speech last night and thought that it was one of the more important lines in a very excellent speech.

Public Education - just another sink hole.

There should be no such thing. . . . .
____________________________________________________________

While I understand where you are coming from I have a different point of view.

It is the function, actually the responsibility of government to protect us. There are those that would argue about what government should protect us from but we obviously can mostly agree that we need to be united to protect ourselves from foreign military threats.

I believe we also need to be protected from the ignorant in our society who would squander the rights purchased for them by the blood of our brave heroes.

Education is the only way to insure the freedom of our future generations. Public education has been good until the teachers organized into unions. Education was the most important function of educators in the past while now it is salaries & benefits. It has gotten sickening.

There was a time in America when unions were prohibited from government employees. A stroke of a pen by legislators could change that back and make teachers and school administrators answer to the people they serve not the union bosses.

If we allow students to go to “private” schools with a voucher that then becomes the new public education. I’m ok with vouchers and private schools, they generally do it better and cheaper than the regular public schools.

35 years or so ago I had a child on a soccer team. We went to one of the parents/kids home after a practice for treats. I talked to the parents of one of my sons friends. We were in their lovely home and they told me how awful they were treated in public education. They did tell me they only made 84G a year, each. They were both teachers.

I don’t buy it that they are underpaid and they certainly not mistreated.

I like the idea of having our teachers under our thumb answerable to us instead of a union. I want them to teach what we say, some legislative group, not what a bunch of teachers want. Teachers are as a rule liberal because they have never worked a real job and had to get ahead.

In our society it is competition that makes the world go round. Teachers don’t understand( for the most part anyway) competition and don’t like it when they see it. Competition is what our kids need more than anything the schools can give as long as the schools give them the tools to compete with.

With a school “system” that includes other schools not only can you have competition for sports and grades in a school but also between schools. We are losing this because of teachers unions.

The answer is get rid of the unions.

To your point: Getting rid of public schools will get rid of the unions, as non-union private/religious schools will out-compete unionized private/religious schools.

At one time, all education was private. I am advocating a return to that model.

Yeah. Once upon a time I worked in a union wafer fab (Hughes Newport Beach). I counted how many people it took to change a light bulb.

13.

It took 13 people to change a light bulb.
