When it came to dances,
Frederic Chopin preferred to write mazurkas, the dance from his native Poland. He didnt write all that many waltzes, but the ones he wrote were among his greatest pieces. The first from this set of three from 1838 is one of his grandest.
Chopin: Waltz in A-flat, Op. 34/1
This may be one of the saddest pieces that Fred ever wrote. Its one of those Chopin pieces I love to play. You dont need great technique to make it work.
Chopin: Waltz in A minor, Op. 34/2
This is a very tricky piece with the waltz beat in the left hand, but staggered groups of four in the right.
Chopin: Waltz in F, Op. 34/3
The next year, 1839, would be the most amazing year in Chopins output, a true miracle year. But thats for next week.

I ask your indulgence while I post this message, perhaps not directly on topic, but one which I feel is in keeping with the spirit of this thread - some words from the man who, in my opinion, was the preeminent Statesman of the Twentieth Century:
GOD BLESS AND PROTECT OUR TROOPS!
Sir Winston S. Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, PC, DL, FRS, Hon. RA (30 November 1874 24 January 1965)
"Having received His Majesty's commission, I have formed an administration of men and women of every party and of almost every point of view. We have differed and quarrelled in the past; but now one bond unites us all - to wage war until victory is won, and never to surrender ourselves to servitude and shame, whatever the cost and agony may be. This is one of the most awe-striking periods in the long history of France and Britain. It is also beyond doubt the most sublime. Side by side, unaided except by their kith and kin in the great Dominions and by the wide Empires which rest beneath their shield, the British and French peoples have advanced to rescue not only Europe, but mankind from the foulest and most soul-destroying tyranny which has ever darkened and stained the pages of history. Behind them - behind us - behind the armies and fleets of Britain and France - gather a group of shattered States and bludgeoned races: the Czechs, the Poles, the Norwegians, the Danes, the Dutch, the Belgians - upon all of whom the long night of barbarism will descend, unbroken even by a star of hope, unless we conquer, as conquer we must; as conquer we shall.
Today is Trinity Sunday. Centuries ago words were written to be a call and a spur to the faithful servants of Truth and Justice: 'Arm yourselves, and be ye men of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict; for it is better for us to perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and our altar. As the Will of God is in Heaven, even so let it be.'"
Radio Broadcast 13May1940
Coronet Winston S. Churchill, 4th Queen's Own Hussars, 1895

Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!
Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)
