Mark Steyn: 2012 Election Is The Last Exit Ramp Before The Death Spiral
Investor's Business Daily ^ | August 10, 2012 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 08/10/2012 4:54:41 PM PDT by Zakeet

The other day, I passed a Republican Party county office here in my home state, its window attractively emblazoned with placards declaring "Believe in America. Romney 2012" and "New Hampshire Believes. Romney 2012." There's not a lot of evidence for the latter proposition, but I'm certainly willing to believe that Romney believes that New Hampshire believes.

[Snip]

If it were up to me, the {Romney's] campaign slogan would be "You're screwed, losers. Steyn 2012" — or, after yielding to the consultants' internals showing that moderates want something more sunny and upbeat, maybe "Get real, you chumps. Steyn 2012." That's the reason I'm not running. Well, that and the Hawaiian birth certificate.

I wouldn't claim to know what America believes or even what "New Hampshire Believes," but this is what I believe — that another four years of the present statist ascendancy will seal America's fate.

As noted here previously, the International Monetary Fund predicts that China will become the world's dominant economic power by 2016. So the guy elected in November will be the first president since Grover Cleveland to know what it feels like to be the global also-ran.

Even this, however, understates the size of catastrophe the United States faces. There are no precedents in history for a great power spending itself to death on the scale America is doing. President Obama has added $5 trillion to the national debt, and has nothing to show for it. Do you know how difficult that is to do?

That’s why they’re going for the Extortion-Racket, with HillaryRomney Extortion-Care.

And Obama has spent the last 3 years wearing out the “it’s the last guys fault” line that when it’s true it will hold no value.

Anyone who is deeply disturbed by the willful destruction of their country for starters ....

I’m not faulting either of you. You did what you thought was right. At least you were thinking.

If you want to blame someone, blame the guy who ran one of the worst campaigns I’ve seen a politician run.

I’m convinced Bush either thought he couldn’t lose due to the successful Desert Storm, or he didn’t actually care if he won or lost.

I was left scratching my head for months that year, as Bush seemed to play rope-a-dope and allow Clinton’s people to pummel him without so much as a burp in response, and he didn’t go after Clinton on the obvious.

I was faulting myself. Yes, I did what I thought was right, at the time, even knowing that I was voting for a kook. But, upon reflection, I concluded that I had served no useful purpose and, in fact, contributed to a calamity and would never vote third party again.

The supreme test weas McCain. I passed. Just barely.

In contrast, voting for Romney is easy.

Only voted for Bush once. Did not vote for McCain. Am so far still determined not to vote for Romney.

I’ve had my fill of Leftists.

If the GOPe wants my vote, they can help get someone nominated that I can vote for.

I've been totally happy with my presidential vote just three times: Goldwater in '64, Reagan in '80 & '84.

Here's hoping you have better luck in your lifetime.

He didn't care. He wasn't prepared to fight some good lookin’ southern boy and didn't care to be prepared. It's just a job to these guys.

I haven't seen a GOP sanctioned politician that has ever fought the good fight. Now, give me a minute while I try and make my point.

My opinion at this time is they are all in it for themselves, every dang one of them and the Country be damned. They'd rather loose than put forth the effort leadership takes. They are in it for the golfing, the vacations, the perks - just like any executive.

It's just a damn job to the fools we've had the last few years. Get in, get your money, get some TV time, travel the world, fool the electorate and enjoy laughing about their stupidity over imported beer with your “democratic enemies”.

You know what I think of McCain? He couldn't stand the fact that it was Palin who energized the base - so he threw in the towel. He had a titty baby fit.

And Dubya, do we so soon forget that he was the arse that pushed TARP through to be spent by an anti-american sociopath? So he had compassion during 911? I remember he waited over a friggin year and bowed to the UN instead of turning some muslim lands to glass. I will NEVER FORGET FALLUJA! Mister compassion can KMA.

None of our candidates care about this country. They care only for themselves - that includes Romney.

But I'll maintain some sliver of hope and vote for Romney - because that is my only choice at this time because I am truly sickened by Obama.

I expect Obama to win a second term for various reasons, including voter fraud, stupidity and the ever moral high ground of conscience.

But I know this as well. Every camel knows when that last straw is placed on its back. Best said by the immortal words of Yosemite Sam..

I was young and pretty much busy providing for the family until Reagan ran of the presidency in 1980. After Carter, it became real clear how much a guy could screw is in one term. I didn’t tune out after that.

I had always voted for our Republican nominee, but I never saw them as the likes of what we have today. McCain? Romney? Whew.

Reagan were my two favorite votes. Bob Dull in 1996, was my least favorite. I swore off warm buckets of horse sweat after that. I did have a relapse in 2004. NEVER AGAIN!

My rule of thumb is this. If I wouldn’t vote for a guy if he had a (D) after his name, I won’t vote for them.

What do you expect from a generation of baby booming, hippies that hate God, country, and the parents who gave birth to them! This is their last hurrah, they have taken over the government, healthcare, courts, schools, and it’s their last chance to destroy the establishment they despise! Woodstock was a satanic, orgy and a window into how the world would look when the hippies took the wheel! They embraced communism and evil to such an extent that we are reaping what they’ve sown. Divorce was abused; thus, they destroyed marriage and the nuclear family because of it. This nation is finished if Obama gets reelected! Forward indeed, thanks baby boomers! Steve Jobs is smiling!

Your analysis is good and premises are solid. I disagree with your conclusion. Hussein won in 08 because the mushy middle broke heavily his way. The gop e in its infinite stupidity decided that what they needed was someone to stake out the middle and appeal to it. Right strategy, wrong election.

I expect more of a normal course this time with the mushy middle basically splitting like it usually does if it shows up at all. That leaves the respective bases to decide it. Husseins base is disspirited. Willards base is well beyond that. When it comes down to actually voting for willard I expect that a lot of conservatives will be otherwise occupied, will leave that space blank, or like myself will vote for a 3rd party.

I don’t think its going to even be close.

I’m not sure there are no precedents. France did it in 18th century and England did it in the first half of the 20th.
