A semiautomatic assault rifle, anyone? How about a few thousand rounds of ammo? On July 20, those weapons of choice killed 12 innocents at the Century 16 Theatre in Aurora, Colo.
The shooter legally bought an AR-15 assault rifle, three other guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition, according to police. In America, acquiring a lethal assault rifle is almost as easy as picking up a buttered popcorn at the movies.
The communities of Aurora, Columbine, Virginia Tech, Northern Illinois University and Chicagos South and West sides know that.
The families of thousands of murdered and injured souls get it. All those left behind, forever transformed, see it.
Why dont our politicians?
The minute the grim news blasted out of Colorado, our leaders started scrambling, running away from the message seared into every lethal bullet these guns must go.

As has been pointed out an AR-15 clone is not an assault rifle, it is a semi-automatic.
Second, maybe the author is right, maybe popcorn at the movie theater should require a national background instant check to purchase. I mean about 2/3rds of the US adult population is either overweight or obese and with a national health care plan that means that their medical expenses are public taxpayer expenses. So, yes, lets require everyone who buys movie popcorn to go through an instant background check to find out if they have been exercising, if they are overweight and/or if they have any medical conditions that would not be helped by a large helping of buttered popcorn. (/sarcasm)
Seriously, the right to keep and bear arms is a God given right that our US Constitution (and several State Constitutions) affirms.

Is that a man?
Brilliant.
(Quoting a Johhny Cash tune:) "I tell ya, life ain't easy for a man named Laura"
Hand guns and shot guns were featured at those grim spectacles. Not that a little detail like that should sidetrack a good screed.
U.S. murders 13,636.
Wonder what the demographic breakdown is for that?
For practical purposes it is a difference with rare distinction. Very few people carry weapons that take stripper clips. I liken it to people who use “effect” when “affect” is correct. Yes they are wrong, but not a single person was confused about their meaning.
I'm an avid gun collector, shooter, and military firearms historian. I have guns that take en bloc clips, clips, removable magazines, and clips & removable magazines. I find it possible to know details about firearms and not get my panties in a bunch when others confuse them.
I suggest that you calm down and focus on getting upset about things that matter, and try not to be a nomenclature nazi. People don't need to know what a piston ring is to have a valid opinion concerning the speed limit.
Indeed. "progressives" are and liberalism is a mental disease.

Ought to stop digging.
In America, acquiring a lethal assault rifle is almost as easy as picking up a buttered popcorn at the movies. Other than the Federal background check. And aren’t all firearms lethal? What a stupendously idiotic statement. It sets the tone for the entire article.
I wonder if anyone has noted that the 5.56 nato round isn’t exactly known as a man killer. Its primary criticism is lack of lethality. That’s why they dusted off old m-14 for iraq.

Really? Then tell that to all those dead bad guys from it. The M-14 was dusted off due to needing longer range shots. Guess what? They went back to the AR-15 platform and created the SPR shooting a heavier bullet. It works wonders for longer range and the bullet it shoots works even better in the M4 for very short ranges.
Automotive deaths: 33,000.
Nobody complains.

Correct Nomenclature keeps you from running laps.
This is my rifle, this is my gun, this is for fighting, this is for fun. Have a great day.
BZZZZT! Wrong. The weapons didn't kill anyone, but someone USED THEM to kill. Huge difference.
Thanks for playing.
Next!
Gentlemen, and ladies of the jury, I rest my case.
Yep. Interesting that the weapon that most Leftists claim is the only “reasonable” gun to own, a shotgun, is far more deadly in a mass homicide scenario than an AR-15.
Grandad’s old 37 Ithaca 12 ga holds 45 00 buckshot pellets, which can be discharged in under five seconds.
Try getting 45 rounds out of an AR-15 in 5 seconds.
Evidence is clear the shotgun was used first.
Dependng on whether he used #0 or #1 buckshot, each round contained between 12 & 16 shot.
May have had between 5 and 8 rounds, without reloading.
5X12=60
8X16=128
AR-15 drum feed jammed early and he switched to the Glock.
