ELBERTA, Summerdale --
President Obama's decision to talk gun control and discuss a ban on assault weapons are hot topics along the Gulf Coast.
Despite the tragic, shooting massacre in Colorado, gun shops continue to sell AR-15's and AK-47's to gun enthusiasts and sportsmen.
The AR-15 is NOT widely used in crime.
According the FBI, of the 199 homicides recorded in Alabama in 2010, handguns were used in 112, hands, fists or feet were used in 17, knives were used in 23....none were committed with a rifle.
Gun control has and will be debated for decades...an issue now on presidential campaign agenda.
There still isn’t a semi-auto ‘real’ AK-47. The Russians assigned them all different AK numbers. They themselves stopped making the original AK-47 with the AKM of 1959. Most “AKs” are actually AKMs or derivatives.
I was planning to order a 6.8 upper in two weeks. Then the shooting happened and I ordered it on Monday. Over the weekend, lead time for uppers went from 60 -90 days to 120 days, but at least I got on the list. C’mon October.
I purchased another AK variant (Hungarian AMD-65) yesterday.
some research on my part reveals that you are entirely correct. I don’t know why, after all of these years I have assumed AR meant automatic rifle.
I stand corrected.
It's interesting that Colt retained a product name developed by ArmaLite; it was certainly early enough in the game for them to call it whatever they wanted and "reinvent" the rifle if they desired. I guess the suits at Colt liked the original name and thought it would sell (and they were correct).
I always figured that they thought it would be nice to go along with the “Colt Automatic Pistol” and the “Colt Automatic Shotgun.” None of which were actually designed by Colt.
Technically, both “Automatic Rifle” and “ARmalite” are correct answers. “Assault Rifle” is not. :P
Anybody see the show ‘Sons of Guns’ where they built a pnuematic pump (or something like that) on the AR-15 platform? It looked sweet I wonder if it ever made it production?
I'd say that the milled-receiver Chinese rifles like the Polytech Legend come pretty close to being semi-auto versions of the "original AK-47", but it's certainly true that most semi-auto AKs are based on the stamped-receiver AKM.
Wow, I was going to step in and comment on the perp’s collection, and how it was a representation of the collection that every enthusiast would have with the proper funds would have...
and I stumbled into a “clip vs mag” and “what does AR stand for” pissing match.
The funny part is that you seem surprised. ;-)
Some of us younger guys, however, don't play with mouse guns.
That's not an AR.
Oh, yeah, also? Direct impingement suuuuucks. Even Stoner regretted that idea later on.
An AR-15, a Remington 870 and two Glock .40S&W pistols don’t exactly strike me as a collection every enthusiast would have. Seems kinda... sparse. And not terribly expensive - he spent less than $4K on all of it, assuming he paid retail.
OK, LOL on that one. And you are spot on.
relax....you’ll hurt yourself.
had a chance to buy a nice FN FAL, cheap, from a club member and let it pass....
still kickin’ myself.
I qualified with AR15 in 1964. Now this was the Air Force but it was a full auto and not known as the M16.
In my platoon, during my time there, we were much more concerned about keeping each other alive than we were over stupid semantics.
Thank your father for his service and Semper Fidelis. I’m glad I didn’t serve with him, kicking your kids ass for something he had not heard since boot camp is not the kind of man I want on my team. No disrespect to him, I don’t think we would get along.
