Rep. Gohmert: Did No One Else in Aurora Theater Have a Gun?
ABC/Yahoo ^ | 7/20/2012 | Chris Good

The shooting could have been limited if someone else in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater had been carrying a gun, Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert said today.

Gohmert reacted to the shooting, which left 12 dead, during an interview this morning on the radio program Ernest Istook Live! From The Heritage Foundation.

"Well it does make me wonder, you know with all those people in the theater, was there nobody that was carrying that could've stopped this guy more quickly?" Gohmert said. "I mean in Tyler, Texas, we had-my hometown-we had a shooter come in over a domestic matter, and just start shooting people. And it was a guy with a concealed carry-he got killed, but his shooting at this guy caused him to run and no doubt saved a lot of lives. He was a real hero."

Colorado allows residents to obtain concealed carry permits, according to the Colorado State Patrol website.

"I know that before we ever had concealed carry in Texas, there was a, just a senseless shooting years ago in Killeen, Texas, in a restaurant, and, you know, if we had had concealed carry permits at the time, there was a woman who had to leave her gun in her car, and if we'd had concealed carry the guy would've been stopped before he could've killed so many people," Gohmert said.

the democrats were allowed to defund and shut down the insane asylums!

Here in Missouri... the 'rats are moving the insane out of the institutions and INTO HOMES! They are putting these people into group homes to integrate with society - it is a huge scam. Here is a link to one of the businesses that is sucking up your tax dollars!

MENTALLY ILL IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD?

Even so, there were, apparently, no men in the theater. Men who could have rushed the shooter all at once. Yeah, they would have risked death, but that’s what real men do when women and children are in serious danger.

I wasn’t there, and maybe this wouldn’t be physically possible when having to negotiate rows of theater seats, but still . . .

True but by the time one would have pulled out their gun, the guy probably had sprayed the audience with a lot of rounds. If you were that close to pull out your gun, then you might have been one of the first causality.

That kind of assumption is just silly.

I can speculate that if even one person had a simple green laser pointer the shooter would have thought it was a gun with a laser.

Then again mine does have one.

I have refrained from posting any “what ifs” until now, but I felt it was worth it.

Conceal carry? Think about the latest LED/green laser lights.

Quote: “Not that I don’t support this view but from all accounts that I’ve heard, someone else having another gun wouldn’t have done much good. I believe the guy had on a lot of protective gear, tear gas and automatic weapons.”

While your basic premise is correct, I’ve got to call you on part of your statement. The shooter did NOT have automatic weapons. He had semi-automatic weapons. There is a difference, a very real and important difference.

Calling semi-automatic weapons “automatic” is the first mark of ignorance of guns on the part of the media. It also serves to raise fear among the uninformed. It’s a common tactic of the gun grabbers.

FYI: Automatic weapons fire multiple bullets with one pull of the trigger. You hold back the trigger and the guns keep firing. Semi-automatics require one pull of the trigger for each shot fired.

Automatic weapons ARE legal, but require a whole different level of authorization from the government. Applicants must submit fingerprints, undergo a background check (beyond the usual check required to buy any gun) and seek sign-off from local law enforcement. They also pay a $200 tax per weapon. The entire process takes about six months. Furthermore, due to a change in the law in 1986, there can be no new automatic firearms produced for civilian sale. THis means that the only automatic weapons available for civilians are those produced prior to 1986. When that law took effect, the price of automatic weapons skyrocketed. A typical automatic rifle now costs in excess of $8,000- $10,000. Automatic weapons, by and large, are playthings for the wealthy (or at least those with a fair amount of disposable income).

Please try to be more careful in your choice of words.

BTW, there is nothing sinister about semi-automatic weapons. They have been in common use since the beginning of the 20th century, not only in military and law enforcement use but in the hands of sportsmen. There is nothing exotic or exceedingly lethal about semi-automatic operation. Throwing the term around is just another tactic to scare the uninformed.

It wouldn’t have taken a gun to stop him. Did nobody else in the theater have a backbone?

> exit and left it open.

Something is still wrong.

If this door opens before or during the show, it means that people can sneak in without paying. Doesn’t an open door set off some kind of warning lamp somewhere?

When I was a kid, if you went out one of those exits before the end of the movie, it tripped a fire alarm!

At the end of the movie, the fire alarm is disengaged and the ushers check to make sure everybody is out before closing the exits and re-arming the fire alarm.

Something doesn’t add up.

So, would you have tackled him?

How far do you think you’d have gotten before he dusted you?

Yeah, you might want to look into that. There are also legal 12 gauge gas-operated shotguns that feed off stick magazines and drums. You can have a 20 round drum in those, and there are 30s under development.

Likewise, there are now helical and snail drums for .308 weapons that hold 50, 75 or more rounds. And there’s always the old Calico carbines.

Yes, they did. And this is one time I will not be offended that an army of lawyers will eat them for lunch.

Some reports have him pulling a variant of the old ‘let your friends into ye theatre for free” trick - open and block one of the emergency/service exits near the screen from closing and locking so your friends can get in. Instead of letting people trying into the theatre for free, he went out to the parking lot, geared up and came back through his rigged door himself.

Many of those alarmed doors in theatres either don’t work due to lack of maintenance, are already disabled by earlier arriving patrons, are easily rigged around with a magnet or are just for show.

I agree with you, it does seem very coincidental that he immediately gave up to the police and that there is the whole UN treaty thing going on this month and coming close to a finalization..........

If you were there, had a gun and could have used it to end the rampage? Morally, yes, you had a duty to do so.

> ‘let your friends into ye theatre for free” trick

Even when I was a kid, a LOOONG time ago, opening one of these doors would have set an alarm and the ushers would have closed and locked it again.

Of course, that would only have forced him to come in the front door, and he could easily have wrought just as much damage.

I’m still saying something does NOT add up.

And in a Conceal/Carry-approved locale, think of how many “morally responsible” individuals might have popped up in their seats to return fire.

Part of the idea of Conceal/Carry is to give the individual bent on destruction pause.
