BAMAKO, Mali (AP) -- Islamist fighters with ties to al-Qaida have destroyed tombs classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in Mali's historic city of Timbuktu, a resident and U.N. officials said Saturday.

Irina Bokova, who heads the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, cited in a statement Saturday reports the centuries-old Muslim mausoleums of Sidi Mahmoud, Sidi, Moctar and Alpha Moya have been destroyed.

Strange that they would destroy MUSLIM mausoleums. Since the Muslim Brotherhood has taken over Egypt, I've wondered how safe the pyramids and other Egyptian monuments are.

They're not safe at all. Muslim supremacists have said repeatedly that the ancient Egyptian monuments and tombs are pagan and should be destroyed or buried. The only legitimate religion and history in the known universe is Islam and Arabic. Nothing else matters.

The Buddhist monuments they destroyed back when Clinton was president were timeless, incalculable treasures. Even Clinton asked the Islamists not to destroy them to no avail.

The Salafists believe mausoleums that attract pilgrims are sacreligious because they distract from worshiping Allah. The Saudi when they took Mecca and Medina from the Hashemites, Faisal from Lawrence of Arabia and the ruling family of Jordan, destroyed all the tombs and other structures that attracted pilgrims. The Saudis have done a bang up job destroying any vestiges of pre-Saudi influence in Arabia.
