(Reuters) - Firefighters struggled on Wednesday to beat back a fiercely aggressive wildfire raging at the edge of Colorado Springs that has forced at least 35,000 people from their homes and was nipping at the edges of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The so-called Waldo Canyon Fire, fanned by gusting winds, has gutted an unknown number of homes on the wooded fringes of Colorado's second-most populous city and prompted more evacuations as flames roared out of control for a fifth day.
President Barack Obama plans to pay a visit to the area on Friday to view the damage, the White House said.

Maybe it’s fitting he’s going to see raging fires then, as Obamacare will be going down in flames tomorrow.
I thought about it later after I typed it, but think of it more as a high pressure fuel vapor bomb, sucks all the air out of the surrounding atmosphere and you suffocate. Because it’s going to be coming out of those big ol’ butt cheeks very, very fast.
Unless Air Farce Zero is prepared to perform low level water drops, I don’t think his skinny butt flying in here and grounding fire fighting flights is going to go over so well.
Every time the President’s plane flies there is a 30 mile TFR put up around it.
I just do not know.
I have decided fight or drink or drink while fighting, no matter what I am sickened.
It just makes me weep.
Another disaster visits Colorado.
I do not know Colorado very well, is the fire in a conservative area of the state or a liberal part? It all comes down to politics with obama
See Post 16.
Maybe George Clooney or Fat Al Sharpton will show up. Bad things often happen in threes.
Haven’t we suffered enough in Colorado?
What? You mean there isn’t already enough hot air in the region?
Colorado Springs, where the fire is, is the most conservative part of the state. It is home to focus on the family and the nsvigators. It is probably the only area of the state more conservative than the arapahoe/Douglas county area I live in. There will be no love for Obama turning their disaster into a campaign stop, believe me. I can’t print what my father in law (who is currently staying with us because he is evacuated from the colo spgs fire) said when he heard Obama was headed into town.
In 2008 BHO took Colorado, hopefully they learn who he really is for 2012.
ElPaso County is the most conservative county in Colorado. I doubt that the great BO will give much to us, but who knows, this is a swing state. His performance and Marxist agenda doesn’t play well here even with a lot of DIM’s.
I know he took Colorado. My point was there are conservative parts of the state where the won will find little welcome. As for Colorado leaning left, if we kept illegal immigrants (and California transplants) from voting, there would be a markedly different result.
Gutless hussein couldn’t even carry a chainsaw up a fire line at 7 or 8 thousand feet, let alone start it and use it.
Moved in from the West Coast to escape the Mexican invasion and the implosions of the state government. Got the price of a mansion from selling a California shack.
Living in California it is as frustrating as well. Most of California is right leaning, but the way districts are drawing the LA basin, San Francisco and the coast are given a real advantage.
CA will go for BHO because of that. If delegate were just awarded on the popular vote probably not.
If you look at the blue/red maps CA is amazingly RED.
I was thinking that the Beast would feel right at home there now.
