(Reuters) - Firefighters struggled on Wednesday to beat back a fiercely aggressive wildfire raging at the edge of Colorado Springs that has forced at least 35,000 people from their homes and was nipping at the edges of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The so-called Waldo Canyon Fire, fanned by gusting winds, has gutted an unknown number of homes on the wooded fringes of Colorado's second-most populous city and prompted more evacuations as flames roared out of control for a fifth day.
President Barack Obama plans to pay a visit to the area on Friday to view the damage, the White House said.

While nobama “visits”, will they ground all planes (including firefighting planes) to clear aitrspace for the King?
yeah, it does sound like a colossally stupid time to do it, unless they land him outside the firefighting plane area and bus him in.
According to my friend who is an air traffic controller in San Jose - yes.
He’ll gain no votes there.
This is a very conservative area.
As long as the SOB sits in the back of the bus i got no problem with it
Will they confiscate all the forks, too?
It’s theater for the benefit of liberals elsewhere. And it’s stupid, if in any way it hinders the fire fighting effort. Ya think George W. Bush would ever have set up such a photo op? I’d just call it crazy if it wasn’t so potentially dangerous.
Of course now, what if he and Biden both go and AF1 falls in the flames. We get President Boehnless Chicken?!?
Actually it is not.
Boulder, Denver, Vail an Aspen are liberal - that’s where the largest populations are. Or I should say the districts are drawn to give dems the advantage.
Douglas and Arapaho Counties are more conservative.
BHO won the state by about 8% in 2008.
We may have this all wrong. He could be heading to Cheyenne Mountain and the NORAD Bunker.
Doesn’t matter how obozo gets there. 30 miles around the President period. Looks like the firefighting plane will be grounded for the @$$(.)
Is he calling it a campaign stop?
But, word is he is not bringing $100B in dollars; no, he is providing relief in the form of $100B in matches and lighter fluid.
Let him go to some liberal area of Colorado and put them in the danger.
From the daily Caller: Most Conservative Counties in the U.S.
18. El Paso County, Colo.
Largest city: Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs is the right-wing stronghold of Colorado. The Air Force Academy and NORAD are based in the county. About 19 percent of the population are civilian veterans, one of the highest rates in the nation. The other conservative influences are social: Focus on the Family is located in Colorado Springs, as are many other parachurch organizations. Colorado Springs was named by Money Magazine as the best big city to live in 2006.

I once lived for a short time in Woodland Park, many years ago. The house I rented had a lovely view of Pike’s Peak. Wonder if it’s still there...
He’s probably thinking which of the 57 states he’s in.
reuter rooter bah. not as bad as abc news with diane sawyer.
tonight she asked how close the fire is to the city center. 3-4 miles wanting the stupid people who get their news from the alphabet networks to think the fire could engulf the city.
channel 7 thedenverchannel.com has been overriding national programs to bring clear, concise, professional reporting of the 3 main front range fires. no hype, no bs speculation no mention of any danger to downtown and no saying the same crap every 30 minutes like fox, cnn weather channel.
bho should have been here last night and flown over the fire with the governor. he would have seen what his afterlife residence is going to look like.
If I were Hickenlooper, I would tell Obama to find something else to do. Unless he wants to bring in an army of people willing to work to undo the damage he and his party have done to the mountain West over the past several decades, he needs to stay wherever he is and shut up.
