**Artist Showcase**

Nyro was born Laura Nigro in the Bronx, New York, the daughter of Gilda Mirsky Nigro, a bookkeeper, and Louis Nigro, a piano tuner and jazz trumpeter. Laura had a younger brother, Jan Nigro. Laura was of Russian Jewish and Italian ancestry. As a child, she taught herself piano, read poetry, and listened to her mother's records by Leontyne Price, Billie Holiday and classical composers such as Ravel and Debussy. She composed her first songs at age eight. With her family, she spent summers in the Catskill Mountains, where her father played the trumpet at resorts.

While in high school, she sang with a group of friends in subway stations and on street corners. She said, "I would go out singing, as a teenager, to a party or out on the street, because there were harmony groups there, and that was one of the joys of my youth." Among her favorite musicians were John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Pete Seeger, Curtis Mayfield, Van Morrison, and girl groups such as The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas and the Shirelles.

Nyro's own renditions of her songs never attained hit status, but between 1968 and 1970 a number of other singers had achieved significant successes on the charts with her works. Other artists scored hit after hit with her songs, led by the 5th Dimension’s “Stoned Soul Picnic” and “Sweet Blindness” in 1968 (then “Wedding Bell Blues” in ’69 and “Blowin' Away” in ’70). Over two consecutive weeks in October 1969, Blood, Sweat & Tears entered the Hot 100 with “And When I Die,” and Three Dog Night followed with “Eli's Coming.” In 1970-71, Barbra Streisand charted three consecutive times with Laura Nyro songs, “Stoney End,” “Time And Love” and “Flim Flam Man.”

Nyro's evocative vocal style mixed jazz and rhythm-and-blues with street pop, gospel, and Broadway, and her three-octave range has led her voice to be characterized as both "a blues soprano" and "a rich, charcoal-smudged alto."

In 1996, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After the diagnosis, Columbia Records prepared a double-disc CD retrospective of material from her years at the label. The company involved Nyro herself, who selected the tracks and approved the final project. She lived to see the release of Stoned Soul Picnic: The Best of Laura Nyro (1997), and was reportedly pleased with the outcome.

Nyro died of ovarian cancer in Danbury, Connecticut, on April 8, 1997, at 49, the age at which the same disease had claimed the life of her mother.

Nyro's influence on popular musicians has also been acknowledged by such artists as Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones, Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, and Melissa Manchester. Todd Rundgren stated that, once he heard her, he "stopped writing songs like The Who and started writing songs like Laura".

On April 14th, 2012, Laura Nyro was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

N.S.U. (BBC 1967)

This song illustrates Cream's ability to improvise a simple progression from a 3 minute radio song into twelve and a half minutes of furious jamming. In August 1967, Cream reached America playing a series of headlining dates at the Fillmore West and the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco (venues owned and operated by legenday promoter Bill Graham). The concerts were a great success and proved very influential on both the band itself and the flourishing hippie scene surrounding them. The band discoved a dedicated and growing listening audience for their live shows and began to stretch out on stage, incorporating more time in their sets for long, drawn-out jams in numbers like "N.S.U.", "Spoonful", "I'm So Glad", "Toad" and "Sweet Wine". At the beginning of the tour they consistently played "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and "Sunshine of Your Love", songs from their upcoming second album Disraeli Gears, but those were quickly dropped from performances, favoring longer jams based on the songs of Fresh Cream.

The band's improvisational approach had a profound effect on both the west coast and New York music scenes (as well as Britain) driving bands like The Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Humble Pie, Jethro Tull, Steppenwolf, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and The Jimi Hendrix Experience into realms of ever-more experimental improviation. The extended stage jams very quickly blead over into the recording studios and it is no coincidence that the summer of '67 saw the death of the three-minute single and the growing trend toward a new genre of Album Oriented Rock (AOR) on the higher quality FM radio frequencies.

N.S.U. (Live at Winterland 1967)
~ Cream ~

In 1993 and '94, Jack Bruce recruited legendary Irish bluesman Gary Moore (Skid Row, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum) for a project that came to involve Cream bandmate Ginger Baker. How this unlikely pairing came about, considering their constant bickering and past conflicts which eventually drove Eric Clapton to abandon Cream, is unclear. However, Baker, who's solo career (Ginger Baker's Airforce) was never much to speak of since Cream's heyday, agreed to participate and the Baker, Bruce, Moore Project (BBM) resulted in an excellent album of songs remenisent of Cream (Around The Next Dream). That Ginger was given top billing and was featured alone on the album cover sporting angels wings, given an unusual amount of song-writting credit on songs obviously penned by Jack Bruce and allowed studio drummer Arran Ahmun to record the album's sole single ("Where In The World") hints that Baker did it for the money. The band's brief tour featured Baker center stage with his arsenal of percussion gear encased in plexiglass sound baffles to protect his ears from intense volume levels which he complained endlessly about. In addition to selections from the album, the tour was heavily weighted with Cream songs. After Baker's departure in 1995, he was replaced by Gary Husband and the Bruce, Moore, Husband Band carried on touring throughout the late 90s. Improvisational Cream songs remained a large percentage of their set-list.

"N.S.U." is the abbreviation for "Non-gonococcal urethritis", a venereal disease related to chlamydia.

As mentioned previously, both Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce were working with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers immediately prior to forming Cream. Mayall's bands were an institution on the British Blues scene and many emerging stars served apprenticeship's under his guidance.

This blues classic, written by the immortal Wille Dixon, was in Cream's reprtore from the very beginning and remained a fan favorite throughout their short 2 year run, often extending into half-hour jams. Before Cream, American blues artists were in decline. Even blues masters like Albert King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and to a lessor extent, B.B. King, were regulated to the southern "Chittlin' circuit". In England however, these artists were revered and played the most prestigious venues to sell-out crowds. American blues were influencing a generation of aspiring UK guitar-slingers like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Rory Gallager, Peter Green, Mick Abrahams, Gary Moore and Jeff Beck. Even American born Jimi Hendrix ventured to London to establish his bonifides as a bluesman after toiling in the "Race" circuits with Ottis Redding, Little Richard and The Isley Brothers.

The British Isles had preserved American Blues music which America had forgotten and dozens of UK bands perculated under the surface, paying their dues and playing the blues.

Cream's unprecidented worldwide success changed everything from the way bands were packaged and merchandised to the illusive artistic control that they fought so hard for. In two years time, Cream went from club venues to ballrooms, to the Royal Albert Hall. Not since The Beatles had a single band influenced so many performers and fans or turned the established music industry on it's head.
