**Artist Showcase**

Nyro was born Laura Nigro in the Bronx, New York, the daughter of Gilda Mirsky Nigro, a bookkeeper, and Louis Nigro, a piano tuner and jazz trumpeter. Laura had a younger brother, Jan Nigro. Laura was of Russian Jewish and Italian ancestry. As a child, she taught herself piano, read poetry, and listened to her mother's records by Leontyne Price, Billie Holiday and classical composers such as Ravel and Debussy. She composed her first songs at age eight. With her family, she spent summers in the Catskill Mountains, where her father played the trumpet at resorts.

While in high school, she sang with a group of friends in subway stations and on street corners. She said, "I would go out singing, as a teenager, to a party or out on the street, because there were harmony groups there, and that was one of the joys of my youth." Among her favorite musicians were John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Pete Seeger, Curtis Mayfield, Van Morrison, and girl groups such as The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas and the Shirelles.

Nyro's own renditions of her songs never attained hit status, but between 1968 and 1970 a number of other singers had achieved significant successes on the charts with her works. Other artists scored hit after hit with her songs, led by the 5th Dimension’s “Stoned Soul Picnic” and “Sweet Blindness” in 1968 (then “Wedding Bell Blues” in ’69 and “Blowin' Away” in ’70). Over two consecutive weeks in October 1969, Blood, Sweat & Tears entered the Hot 100 with “And When I Die,” and Three Dog Night followed with “Eli's Coming.” In 1970-71, Barbra Streisand charted three consecutive times with Laura Nyro songs, “Stoney End,” “Time And Love” and “Flim Flam Man.”

Nyro's evocative vocal style mixed jazz and rhythm-and-blues with street pop, gospel, and Broadway, and her three-octave range has led her voice to be characterized as both "a blues soprano" and "a rich, charcoal-smudged alto."

In 1996, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After the diagnosis, Columbia Records prepared a double-disc CD retrospective of material from her years at the label. The company involved Nyro herself, who selected the tracks and approved the final project. She lived to see the release of Stoned Soul Picnic: The Best of Laura Nyro (1997), and was reportedly pleased with the outcome.

Nyro died of ovarian cancer in Danbury, Connecticut, on April 8, 1997, at 49, the age at which the same disease had claimed the life of her mother.

Nyro's influence on popular musicians has also been acknowledged by such artists as Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones, Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, and Melissa Manchester. Todd Rundgren stated that, once he heard her, he "stopped writing songs like The Who and started writing songs like Laura".

On April 14th, 2012, Laura Nyro was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

That’s the kind of temps that I like.

Nice French horn bits in the Academic Festival Overture. :)

As a former...but not too good...horn player they stand out
to my listening ears.

Co-written by Jack Bruce and his wife, Janet Godfrey, "Sleepy Time Time" became a standard Cream performance number along with "Sweet Wine" which Godfrey co-wrote with Ginger Baker. The song is a showcase for Clapton's distintive slow blues style leading to the moniker "Slowhand" given to him by Giorgio Gomelsky, owner the Crawdaddy Club where The Rolling Stones were the house band. Gomelsky hired The Yardbirds to replace the Stones when Beatlemania hit and went on to manage them. He was also their producer from the beginning through 1966.

The terrible experience Johannes Brahms went through with his piano concerto caused him to shy away from the genre. Now, decades later at the age of 48, he was ready to try again. The premiere came in Budapest in November 1881 with Brahms on the piano. Clara Schumann was shocked at the deterioration of Jo’s piano technique, but he gamely made his way through the thickly textured piano writing.

It begins with a dreamy statement by piano and horn, and then Brahms takes off on one of his magical journeys.

Brahms did not write this concerto in the traditional three movements, but in four like a symphony, with a scherzo in D minor in second position.

For his beautiful slow movement, Brahms lays the sweetness on with a movement where the solo cello plays a role almost as important as the piano.

The finale is a throwback to Mozart’s and Beethoven’s B-flat piano concertos. The grownups are gone, and now it’s time for the kids to play.

Brahms had great success taking this concerto on the road, except in Leipzig.

Brahms: Piano Concerto #2 in B-flat Major, Op. 83

Cream's second UK single was written and sung by Eric Clapton, and again was a record company choice. The band hated it and left it off their albums, refused to perform it and forbid it's release in the US. A wise move since American audiences never heard this commercial side of the band. The success in the UK did however leverage the band to negotiate a harder rock image for their US debut in 1967.

The summer of 1882 at Bad Ischl was a fine one for Johannes Brahms for he got a lot of work done. One of the best pieces was his latest piano trio. His first trio from his teenage years had been a large work, but this work of his maturity is wonderfully compact.

It begins with a delicious first subject that just commands attention. The second subject at 1:31 and the third at 2:50 are juicy. The development section is impassioned. Recapitulation comes at 5:28, and it’s re-composed, as usual, for Brahms. It comes to a wonderful, decisive close.

Brahms: Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in C Major, Op. 87, first movement

Brahms turns to A minor for a theme-and-variations movement based on a tune with a Hungarian flavor. The first variation at 1:19 is desolate. The second variation at 2:39 is a bit more dance-like. The third variation at 3:51 sounds like gypsy music filtered through Bach. At 4:54 the fourth variation is in the major. The fifth variation at 6:15 returns to the minor and spins the melody in triple time. It ends peacefully.

second movement

The scherzo is in C minor. The middle section is one of Brahms’ most magical moments. He writes a waltz in C Major, but not like Johann Strauss. It’s beautiful, and you don’t want it to end. But being a scherzo, it must.

third movement

For a finale, Brahms sets a carnival to music.

fourth movement
