Tunes For The Troops     **Artist Showcase** Nyro was born Laura Nigro in the Bronx, New York, the daughter of Gilda Mirsky Nigro, a bookkeeper, and Louis Nigro, a piano tuner and jazz trumpeter. Laura had a younger brother, Jan Nigro. Laura was of Russian Jewish and Italian ancestry. As a child, she taught herself piano, read poetry, and listened to her mother's records by Leontyne Price, Billie Holiday and classical composers such as Ravel and Debussy. She composed her first songs at age eight. With her family, she spent summers in the Catskill Mountains, where her father played the trumpet at resorts. While in high school, she sang with a group of friends in subway stations and on street corners. She said, "I would go out singing, as a teenager, to a party or out on the street, because there were harmony groups there, and that was one of the joys of my youth." Among her favorite musicians were John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Pete Seeger, Curtis Mayfield, Van Morrison, and girl groups such as The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas and the Shirelles. Nyro's own renditions of her songs never attained hit status, but between 1968 and 1970 a number of other singers had achieved significant successes on the charts with her works. Other artists scored hit after hit with her songs, led by the 5th Dimension’s “Stoned Soul Picnic” and “Sweet Blindness” in 1968 (then “Wedding Bell Blues” in ’69 and “Blowin' Away” in ’70). Over two consecutive weeks in October 1969, Blood, Sweat & Tears entered the Hot 100 with “And When I Die,” and Three Dog Night followed with “Eli's Coming.” In 1970-71, Barbra Streisand charted three consecutive times with Laura Nyro songs, “Stoney End,” “Time And Love” and “Flim Flam Man.” Nyro's evocative vocal style mixed jazz and rhythm-and-blues with street pop, gospel, and Broadway, and her three-octave range has led her voice to be characterized as both "a blues soprano" and "a rich, charcoal-smudged alto." In 1996, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After the diagnosis, Columbia Records prepared a double-disc CD retrospective of material from her years at the label. The company involved Nyro herself, who selected the tracks and approved the final project. She lived to see the release of Stoned Soul Picnic: The Best of Laura Nyro (1997), and was reportedly pleased with the outcome. Nyro died of ovarian cancer in Danbury, Connecticut, on April 8, 1997, at 49, the age at which the same disease had claimed the life of her mother. Nyro's influence on popular musicians has also been acknowledged by such artists as Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones, Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, and Melissa Manchester. Todd Rundgren stated that, once he heard her, he "stopped writing songs like The Who and started writing songs like Laura". On April 14th, 2012, Laura Nyro was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Enjoy the variety of musical selections that the Canteen Deejays provide throughout the thread. Johannes Brahms spent a nerve racking couple of weeks getting the Violin Concerto ready for Leipzig, and as usual it didn’t impress the musical denizens of that city. Brahms handed the baton over to Hellmesberger for the Vienna premiere, which rattled Joachim. But Vienna loved it! It took a long time before its popularity traveled beyond Vienna, but eventually it became the crown jewel of the violin concerto repertory.

Rather than play the pedant, I suggest just sitting back and rolling with it. You’ve learned what to listen for. The finale is one of the few times that Brahms wrote for gypsy violin.

With this concerto under his belt, Jo grew the famous full length patriarchal beard of his later years. He had grown fat, and now he took up a top brand of Cuban cigar. Life was good.

Cream formed in June of 1966 and lasted just over two years. In that short time, the band became the world's most popular "jam" band foreshadowing and influencing the emergence of bands such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and The Jeff Beck Group. They redefined the way music was presented, especially improvisational blues, often turning 3 minute songs into expanded jam sessions with extended solos and psychedelic light shows. In their short career, they sold over 15 million albums worldwide and had the world's first platinum-selling double album (Wheels of Fire).

Eric Clapton, the former lead guitarist from The Yardbirds was working with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, but Britain's premier blues guitarist was largely unknown in the US because he had left the Yardbirds before they debuted in America. Eric felt The Bluesbreakers were too restrictive and he needed a change. When he met drummer Ginger Baker who was leading The Graham Bond Organisation and found he was looking for a change as well, they discussed the possibility of forming a jazz/blues based trio. Clapton had bassist/pianist/vocalist Jack Bruce in mind as the third man, having worked with him in John Mayall's group. While Clapton admired Bruce, Baker loathed him and had actually fired Jack at knifepoint from the Graham Bond band. Their feuding and sabatoge both onstage and off was legendary, however, Baker admired Clapton and put differences aside to form a band he considered the "Cream of the crop".

The band debuted in July of '66 and were an instant sensation, releasing their first album in the UK (Fresh Cream) in November. In those days, it was common for the BBC to bring the top bands into their studios to record live (most noteably the Beatles), apparently to save on royality payments to record companies and to get the drop on soon-to-be-released material. Durring late 1966 and 1967, Cream recorded several sessions at the "Beeb". Once thought lost, broadcast transcriptions of those archive recordings have been surfacing since Cream's reunion tour in 2005, giving the band's American fans a new fount of source material to relive those Halcyon Days.

The summer of 1879 was the last time that Johannes Brahms spent his summer at Lake Worth. He was 46 and busy as ever. This summer saw the composition of his Violin Sonata in G Major, a piece that thrilled Clara Schumann to no end. Three violin sonatas had gone into the fireplace, and this was the first survivor. The first movement is sheer beauty. He breaks the 6/4 time signature into groups of three and groups of two. It’s great rhythmic work.

The slow movement is in E-flat Major and wanders about in a delicious rhythmic fog despite the cut-and-dried 2/4 time signature. The double-stopping on the violin in the middle is heartbreaking.

The finale is based on two songs written in the same period and contains a quote from the slow movement. All is peace and contentment at the end.
