Here we go again, Groundhog Day. And likely with almost the same result as last time likely.

Interesting quote:

Condemning the outside interference in the election, Greek blogger Nick Malkoutzis, who is also deputy editor of deputy editor of Kathimerini English Edition, writes that "Europe that has become scared of democracy".

Could someone check me to see if I have this correctly please? The New Democratic party can form a coalition with other probailout parties to maintain a majority in parliament. This means that Greece will be able to move on past the gridlock that has been since the last election.

The probailout coalition will attempt to keep Greece in the Euro and continue the austerity measures. However, Greece is still going to do a header because of dramatically reduced amounts of revenue. Eventually, a decision will have to made by Germans (not the French since they’ve doubled down on stupid) and allies to keep bailing out Greece or try to say monies for Spain and Italy?

There is something systemically unsustainable in western capitalism and unless there is a fundamental transformation in our markets, wealth structure, and moral beliefs the first world will continue undeveloping.

Utter and absolute BullC*ap. Capitalism is the only system that advance civilization. Socialism is the cancer that destroy Capitalism.

I am by no means suggesting socialism is the answer. I am graduating with an MBA from a prestigious american university at the end of the year and I’m mad as hell

If it is prestigious university then it is almost certain that you have been utterly brainwashed to never see the moral good of Capitalism. MBA programs are infested with leftists statists. The single reason the US became the worlds economic superpower is because government was wise enough to let people be free and allow Capitalism flourish.

Now our corrupt government is destroying our Republic via socialistic, statist programs.

I strongly suggest you study the works of Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek, Eugen von Böhem-Bawerk, Milton Friedman and others.

Read Mises's Economic Freedom and Interventionism and Planning for Freedom Read Hayek's The Road to Serfdom then his other masterpiece, The Fatal Conceit. Milton Friedman classic, "Free to Choose" is an easy read.

Read the masters of Economic Liberty and you will clearly understand that only Capitalism will allow civilization to advance.

If, for the past one-hundred years, we did not have the advancing cancer of Statism,(that is, if we had true Capitalism) then I have no doubt the Moon would be colonized and Mars would be a popular vacation and working destination. Government is the single reason that we have major problems today.

No. Capitalism is the only solution. Get government out of the mix.

Once again, I like capitalism but I love and crave competence the most.

Huh? That statement it illogical and indicates a brainwashing in your MBA programs. It indicates to me that the "elites" at your university has filled your brain with falsehoods.

Please explain further the reasoning behind your statement.

I suggest you read up on Joseph Schumpeter and "creative destruction." Capitalism, if left alone, will always reward the most competent among us.

Many of the faults attributed to capitalism are actually the result of government intervening on behalf of businesses that don't want open and free competition. This is better known as Crony Capitalism (which is really a product of government actions).

Are you sure that a pro-bailout coalition is on its way? Sounds like more deadlock to me:

From the Guardian:

• Horsetrading between the parties has begun. Pasok has said it won't form a government without Syriza. Syriza has indicated (see above) that it would prefer a spell in opposition. The Independent Greeks, who were one option for New Democracy, have said they keen to support a government that will condemn the bailout agreements.

The single reason the US became the world’s economic superpower is the condition WW2 left the world in. If you remember your history America was the developed world’s asshole before WW2.

Also, if you’d ever been in a top level American MBA program you’d know they aren’t filled with “leftist statists” and are instead populated with custodians of corporate status quo and are teaching from a curriculum largely developed in the 80’s.

You’re the one who’s been brainwashed by largely media jingoism and talking points. I question the veracity and continued relevance of everything I’m taught particularly when it comes from pillars of our academic community (no matter their biases) who’ve collected a nice booty in consulting fees while guiding private institutions, fiscal policy, and economic regulation into this quagmire.

Isn’t that something? Unbelievable the way sports can be a cultural microcosm, especially the olympics and national tournaments like this.

During WWII the U.S. organized the most **massive** military effort in the history of humankind on two fronts a half a word apart. Gee! I wonder how they did that without being an "economic superpower" until **after** WWII ? Got me!

Gentlemen, gentlemen (or ladies, ladies), could we please get back to a discussion of the Greek elections? This is a great thread and we need to focus on the matter at hand.

Huh? The United States was a world economic superpower before WW2. Before WW1 foreigners were pouring investment capital into the U.S.

Without any government interference industry leaders help propel the US into the worlds economic Superpower. By 1920 The US was worlds's greatest economic power.

The national income in 1920 in the US was greater than Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Canada and a host of other smaller countries.

We produced more goods and services than any other nation on Earth -- in total and on a per-capita basis.

We had Ford, Rockefeller, Mellon, others advancing technology and the economy of the United States.

Rockefeller was a genius at hiring the best and the brightest and giving them the incentive to innovate and advance technology. Rockefeller and his genius employees helped commercialize kerosene which helped save the whales :) Rockefeller was always looking at utilizing every aspect of a product -- made him rich and made people's lives better.

If you remember your history America was the developed world’s asshole before WW2.

I have to respectfully disagree.

I’m more than a little worried.

As Ian Darke on ESPN (I think it was him, I get the match commentators confused) pointed out at the open to Poland/Russia earlier this week, those teams can’t meet without “matters political, historical and polemical arising.”

If Germany was smart, they’d tank the game.

your'e right. Just saw your post. I apologize.

The best thing for Greece is to leave the EU and wean itself off of Socialism.

You are misguided.

The single reason the US is the world's economic superpower is the US Constitution and the freedoms it ensures for US citizens. The condition of the world post-WWII was due to other nations of the "developed world" lacking the same degree of freedom. A capitalistic worldview and its ensuing wealth is the by-product of the freedoms enumerated in our Constitution under a rule of law.

Do you know if Samaras is against the bail-out proposals? I thought I heard he was.

I have read through the blog at the Guardian. It seems with the coalitions that will be needed to be formed, than the likelihood is nil for any real reforms that will "save" Greece.

Yes the American engineer and worker is highly resourceful and industrious and when focused (and unencumbered from a great war on her own shores) is capable of immense achievements. But we were not a superpower then. It was the economic collapse of much of the world following WW2 that allowed the 20th century concept of the superpower to emerge.

One can not simply dismiss government intervention wholesale, it was government intervention in the 1930’s that laid the groundwork for the US to prosper after the war. And it wasn’t until the late 70’s when this system began to be dismantled that we entered the bubble cycle we now find ourselves in. Each subsequent recession since then has been longer and worse than the one proceeding it while, concurrently, financial instruments have become more complex and government regulation weakened.

I’m for intelligent regulation written by qualified, competent professionals and equal balance between the influence of industry, government, and consumers in the enforcement and oversight of this regulation. Professionals must feel the pain that is caused by their criminal mismanagement of risk.

However, as livius just said, let’s suspend this 60 year old digression in favor of more topical issues.

“The best thing for Greece is to leave the EU and wean itself off of Socialism.”

This is mostly true. Something similar to the transformation Poland underwent, and now they have the fastest growing economy in Europe.

Absolutely not. That is more of the same. Exporting this behavior globally while chasing money around the world until it’s all gone will leave the WHOLE world (instead of half of it) in this predicament.

That's true. And logically, the eventual consequence of unbridled globalism/free trade (cloaked as capitalism to conceal its unpalatable aspects) without a moral counterbalance is slave labor.
