Clara Schumann decided to spend the summer of 1864 at Baden-Baden, and
Johannes Brahms became a part of her household at the resort. Among the luminaries Jo met in Baden were Waltz King Johann Strauss the Younger, composer Anton Rubinstein, Russian author Ivan Turgenev, and flamboyant opera singer Pauline Viardot-Garcia who became a ahem! close friend. (No virgin she!) Jo and Clara wowed local artists with the Sonata for 2 Pianos in F minor, Op. 34a, which was the survivor of the failed string quintet.
From the idyllic summer came one of Brahms great, sad songs.
Brahms: Nicht mehr zu dir zu gehen, Op. 32

Good evening, Kathy!
*HUGS*
Your cartoon nails it! There is nothing like the unconditional love of a child for his Dad or Mom. Thanks for demonstrating that on this particular weekend. Every Fathers' Day the Left-wing forces of Evil bent on destroying the American family flood the media with stories of deadbeat, absent and abusive fathers. What the world needs to know is that there are millions of faithful, hard-working, loving fathers pulling their weight in society and in their nuclear families. We all know who they are - a disproportionate number of them serve in our Armed Forces.
Bully for them, I say! We depend upon them more than they will ever know!

GOD BLESS AND PROTECT OUR TROOPS!
TATTOO (Click)
Must retire the 0500 0430 Reveille approaches relentlessly. Our Taskmasters vex us with an ever-increasing burden of work. They have sequestered us in a remote chamber known only as The Land of the Lost, which bears a banner over the lintel stating:
ABANDON ALL HOPE, YE WHO ENTER HERE!
They stand and mutely watch over us as we toil hour upon hour without respite.
The Bugler, their minion, his grim visage replete with an evil sneer, already mounts the parapet.
If I can escape their iron grip, Ill chat with you all on the morrow. I can say no more they approach!
Do poor Tom some charity, whom the foul fiend vexes!
Good night, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America!
Godspeed our Troops around the Globe especially those in harms way by virtue of their service and sacrifice we continue to live in Freedom!

Johannes Brahms began work on another sextet, but this time he found a different solution to the formal problem of bottom-heaviness. Now, instead of having all six instruments playing constantly, they speak only when they need to. This sextet lacks the busyness of the Spring Sextet.
Its known as the Agatha Sextet because it said goodbye to Agatha von Siebold. A few years earlier, Jo had met and briefly wooed her, but his financial circumstances made the prospect of marriage impossible. He was willing to make her his mistress, however, but Agatha came from a good family and wasnt going to fall for that line. She was heartbroken about the whole thing. Brahms spells out her name in one of the melodic lines.
It begins with an ostinato on the viola as the violin takes up the first subject in G Major. At 2:27 his second subject is absolutely juicy. The exposition repeat begins at 4:15. The development begins at 8:10, and the recapitulation at 10:10. The coda at 14:02 is based on the first subject, but without the sense of regret.
Brahms: Sextet in G Major, Op. 36, first movement
The scherzo is placed in second position, and its in 2/4, not the traditional 3/4. Its quiet and contemplative, not rumbustious at all. The middle section at 3:20 begins with a sinuous passage that leads into a wild and happy dance in 3/4. At 5:05 the first subject returns, and the coda at 7:37 is based on the middle section, but now in the minor. Its quite a surprise.
second movement
A tremolo passage leads into the finales first subject, which has a swinging propulsiveness to it. At 1:18 the second subject enters. The exposition repeats at 2:00, so you get to hear those two glorious melodies twice. Development begins at 4:00, and its a very short section, because at 5:03 the recapitulation begins. He starts his coda at 7:03 for a great wrap-up.
fourth movement

I saw Van Halen in concert about a week and a half ago, and their opening act was Kool & The Gang. Yes, they did play this. In general, they gave a really good performance.
Oh, the headliner was okay too.
