(RTTNews) - New claims for unemployment insurance in the U.S. unexpectedly saw a modest increase in the week ended June 9th, according to figures released Thursday by the Labor Department.
The Labor Department estimated initial jobless claims at a seasonally adjusted level of 386,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised level of 380,000.
The increase surprised economists, who had expected jobless claims to edge down to 375,000 from the 377,000 originally reported for the previous week.
Lindsey Piegza, an economist at FTN Financial, said, "While noticeably down from this time last year, claims remain elevated after the downward trend arrested back in February."
"The recent and growing weakness in the labor force continues to undermine confidence in the sustainability of the U.S. recovery," she added. "The downward trend in claims has yet to be reinstated suggesting further weakness in payrolls is likely."

Please, no, my liver can't take it any more.
“unexpected” because the president’s economic program has been working so well and we are in the middle of a re-energizing recovery from those bad republican (5% unemployment) years...
“unexpected”
They keep using that word. I don’t think it means what they think it means.
What recovery?
Drink?
ooops- a mistaaaaake..
they should have waited till late friday to release
this news flash.... well maybe the obummer news agencies don’t care anymore.
How many times can the “experts” use the term “unexpectedly” before their “expert” status is called into question?
Cant be, according to the genius in chief, the private sector is doing fine
They use the word “unexpected” more than a rap artiste uses the “F-word.”
You’d think that after a while, the word loses meaning.
As a science type, I do experience the thrill of “unexpected” occasionally.
However, amongst my colleagues, one who experiences “unexpected” too often soon finds themselves working in areas where less intellect is required.
Three of which are obviously journalism, economics analysis, and politics.
There’s no scorekeeping on the MSM.
An infinite number of errors is considered acceptable.
“Unexpected” is BACK! Yeaaaaah!!!!
The backroom Dem strategy meetings are probably already trying to figure out how to dump The One and replace him with a viable candidate.
Their internal polling is probably showing they are headed for an atrocious defeat. It would be hilarious if Obama got fewer Electoral Votes in 2012 than McCain got in 2008.
I expected it, why can’t they? Same President. Same bad news.
