In Case You Don't Like Romney...
Columnist Andrew McCarthy gives us what probably is the most important question regarding the upcoming presidential election
If Romney wins the nomination, as seems very likely, I will enthusiastically support his candidacy. For my friends who may have hesitation on that score, Id just ask you to keep four things in mind:
1.. Justice Scalia just turned 78
2.. Justice Kennedy will turn 78 later this year
3.. Justice Breyer will be 76 in August
4.. Justice Ginsburg turned 81 about a week ago and has had cancer twice.
Whoever we elect as president in November is almost certainly going to choose at least one and maybe more new members of the Supreme Court in addition to hundreds of other life-tenured federal judges, all of whom will be making momentous decisions about our lives for decades to come.
If you dont think it matters whether the guy making those calls is Mitt Romney or Barack Obama, I think youre smokin something funky .
So for anybody who is thinking of not voting because your favorite didnt get nominated, or writing in a candidate who can't win ... just imagine this possibility:
'SUPREME COURT JUSTICE ERIC HOLDER'
Did that get your attention!
George Orwell was, sadly, prophetic. What a brilliant man.
The only charitable thing I can say about Romney is that he doesn't appear to have a visceral hatred of America as does the Kenyan Douchebag.
Is that enough to vote for him?
No.

Agreed. It's a difference in style, rather than substance.
1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years. His mothers name was Hephzibah. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 3 He rebuilt the high places his father Hezekiah had destroyed; he also erected altars to Baal and made an Asherah pole, as Ahab king of Israel had done. He bowed down to all the starry hosts and worshiped them. 4 He built altars in the temple of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, In Jerusalem I will put my Name. 5 In the two courts of the temple of the Lord, he built altars to all the starry hosts. 6 He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced divination, sought omens, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.
7 He took the carved Asherah pole he had made and put it in the temple, of which the Lord had said to David and to his son Solomon, In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name forever. 8 I will not again make the feet of the Israelites wander from the land I gave their ancestors, if only they will be careful to do everything I commanded them and will keep the whole Law that my servant Moses gave them. 9 But the people did not listen. Manasseh led them astray, so that they did more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites.
10 The Lord said through his servants the prophets: 11 Manasseh king of Judah has committed these detestable sins. He has done more evil than the Amorites who preceded him and has led Judah into sin with his idols. 12 Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I am going to bring such disaster on Jerusalem and Judah that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle. 13 I will stretch out over Jerusalem the measuring line used against Samaria and the plumb line used against the house of Ahab. I will wipe out Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down. 14 I will forsake the remnant of my inheritance and give them into the hands of enemies. They will be looted and plundered by all their enemies; 15 they have done evil in my eyes and have aroused my anger from the day their ancestors came out of Egypt until this day.
16 Moreover, Manasseh also shed so much innocent blood that he filled Jerusalem from end to endbesides the sin that he had caused Judah to commit, so that they did evil in the eyes of the Lord.
17 As for the other events of Manassehs reign, and all he did, including the sin he committed, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 18 Manasseh rested with his ancestors and was buried in his palace garden, the garden of Uzza. And Amon his son succeeded him as king.
19 Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem two years. His mothers name was Meshullemeth daughter of Haruz; she was from Jotbah. 20 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as his father Manasseh had done. 21 He followed completely the ways of his father, worshiping the idols his father had worshiped, and bowing down to them. 22 He forsook the Lord, the God of his ancestors, and did not walk in obedience to him.
23 Amons officials conspired against him and assassinated the king in his palace. 24 Then the people of the land killed all who had plotted against King Amon, and they made Josiah his son king in his place.
25 As for the other events of Amons reign, and what he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 26 He was buried in his tomb in the garden of Uzza. And Josiah his son succeeded him as king.

I've already answered whom I would choose, I just refuse to accept your false premise that it must be one of the statist liberals.
“We have a freeper running for the presidency . . .”
Thank you. Good post.
I almost agree, because I do not trust Romney. On the other hand I don't simply not trust Bambi, I absolutely know I CAN trust him to continue the most destructive administration ever if he wins.
I believe that Romney is our test.
Romney is not much of a test, more like a pop quiz compared to Bambi who is more like a final exam. Ridding ourselves of the scourge of the worst administration ever has to happen, there is no if ands or buts about it.
This idea that you aren't going to compromise your pinciples means you should never vote. No one is perfect, no one is totally principled, not even you, no one is even close.
You write off my carefully thought-out (I don't write these posts in three minutes -- I spend quite a lot of time on them to make my arguments as understandable as possible) and reasoned posts presenting an argument for a very different (and shocking, and unorthodox) strategy on how to DEAL with the fact that we're looking at an authoritarian statist liberal president no matter which guy wins.
That is a fact that we have to DEAL WITH. You think ABO is the best way to deal with it; I think ABO is avoiding dealing with it altogether.
I keep the posts as free of anger and emotion as I can. And you regard them as "volumes of empty rhetoric."
All I can do is shake my head and sigh at what looks very much to me like obstinate, or desperate, or fearful, refusal to consider any other strategy than ABO. Your mind has closed completely, it appears to me.
As for your question, although I suspect that you've already determined to consider whatever reply I make as "hollow words":
Sounds like you at least acknowledge that either Romney or Obama will be the next president. You wake up the day after the election and turn on the news, who do YOU PREFER (even if its by a 0.000001% difference) they say is our next president? Mitt Romney or Barack Obama?
I am absolutely neutral as to preference, exactly the same way that I am neutral as to Coke or Pepsi. You will probably interpret that as comparing Obama/Romney to Coke/Pepsi, but you would be quite wrong; it is an illustration of the nature of my preference, or lack thereof.
There is ONE THING that I prefer: that whichever guy wins, goes into office with a final vote tally where two out of every three voters OPPOSED him.
Now I know that you will consider those hollow words because, I believe, it's the only way you can comfortably deal with them. It is what it is.
I believe like you, don’t take your eye off the bouncing ball. The only reason the Dems haven’t bounced Obama is they foolishly believe he has the proper message to stay in office and to do their number one objective. THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES. Put on enough hard line left thinking justices to turn this country into a banana republic.
Perhaps it's time for a brief reality check for all of us. Personally, my Conservative credentials are intact. I maxed out to Gingich, and also did major fund-raising for The Hermanator. I was the co-founder of the infamous Seminole Seven who forced a court in Seminole County to send a case threatening to disenfranchise 1800 Bush military voters up to Leon County (Tallahassee) for our final victory.
I am not nearly so much pro-Rerpublican as I am pro-conservative, to the extent when I was with network in New York, I was registered as a member of the Conservative Party, not a Republican.
But that is not the real issue. The real issue is that in about four months, America will elect a new president. I wish the Republican candidate was The Newtster, The Hermanator, or Mr. Santorum, rather than Romney.... but to my dislike, we lost that primary battle.
That said, I realize that in the wide, wide world of political reality, either Mr. Romney or Mr. Obama will be elected. No third party candidate has seriously started, much less emerged from the “static.” BTW, if one does, it could be disastrous. Ross Perot begat Clinton in 1992. Had Perot not run, Clinton would have lost.
41 was not all that different from Clinton in some ways, but he was the MORE conservative candidate.
That's what it amounts to now. Romney is far from a true Movement Conservative, but he is certainly MORE conservative than the current resident Marxist, Obama.
America, and every American faces a binary choice. Will we help Obama get elected by voting for him or sitting home, or will we support the more conservative candidate, Romney? If you have a problem with using Romeny’s name in the same sentence with “conservative,” then just call him “less liberal”.
Finally, the issue of trolls. Are they here? Of course they are. DUmmies are politically uninformed, lazy, likely to be ultra thin druggies if male, fat and ugly if female, and probably on some form of psychotropic medication plus welfare, but they are not stupid, so of course they are here.... messing with us.... just as some of us lurk at DU, watch what they are doing, and throw in the occasional grenade just to see who will leap on top of it. I know one FReeper who has 3 DU accounts. Sometimes he even argues with himself just to add to his “creds.”
We cannot ignore the troll factor, just as we cannot ignore the cold hard fact that Romney or Obama will be the next president. Like Romney or not, I simply could not face my grandchildren if I had not done everything (legal) to stop Obama and Obamaism.
Could you?

Obama would have no power at all if it were not given to him by God.
Do you agree with that statement?
If that is a true statement, then you have to ask the question "Why on Earth would God send us Obama to be our president?"
Maybe it is because as a nation we have lost faith in Him. Maybe since America has been more than willing to trust in the Arm of Flesh rather than to place their collective trust in God, He has visited upon us EXACTLY WHAT WE ASKED FOR.
Now he has given us a very difficult conundrum. Do we trust in God or do we trust in Romney?
Again we are putting our faith in the arm of flesh, this time we are going to put our collective trust in a man who has spent his entire adult political career advocating for abortion on demand, gay marriage, gay adoptions and on top of everything else believes that God is just one of a gazillion gods who meet every once in a while on the planet Kolob and vote to exalt some more gods.
Betty, Romney is going to win the presidency. Of that I am pretty convinced. But he is not going to save the country. Only God will do that. And God will only do that if there is a remnant of his people who fear Him more than they fear the man He has ordained to be our president for the last 4 years.
I will not vote for Romney. I compromised my principles years ago to vote for Schwarzenegger because I feared the mess that Gray Davis would leave our state. Things got much worse under Schwarzenegger than they ever got under Gray Davis. I don't see the country getting any better under Romney. But I expect he will be elected. Just not with my vote. I learned my lesson when Schwarzenegger was elected with my vote in the mix. Now we have Brown. We're doomed.
Praise God.
But I gather you believe I am an "unprincipled conservative."
You haven't voted yet, have you?
You have First Amendment protection for this sort of thing until such time as Obama destroys the First Amendment....
See paragraph 1.

Thank God that we have citizens that won't compromise their principles.

Amen, Brother FReeper.
God before Country. I fear God more than I fear Obama. Romney promoted, and it is on record, a homosexual organization (Gay Youth Pride) whose "outreach" includes 12-year-old kids, and Romney knew it. He just recently confirmed his belief that homosexual couples "who love each other" should have a right to adopt children -- which really means that Romney believes the government has the right to punish adoption agencies that refuse to hand over the children entrusted to them to homosexual couples.
When I refuse to be part of knowingly, willingly handing political power to a person like that, I KNOW I am doing right by God.
Christians who, out of fear and desperation and pretzel-like rationale, voted FOR a person who believes that depravity is "right," who then asked God to bless our America, have a different view of God than I do.
I won’t be grieving.
You beautifully expressed what I have been feeling.
Thank you.
