In Case You Don't Like Romney...
Columnist Andrew McCarthy gives us what probably is the most important question regarding the upcoming presidential election
If Romney wins the nomination, as seems very likely, I will enthusiastically support his candidacy. For my friends who may have hesitation on that score, Id just ask you to keep four things in mind:
1.. Justice Scalia just turned 78
2.. Justice Kennedy will turn 78 later this year
3.. Justice Breyer will be 76 in August
4.. Justice Ginsburg turned 81 about a week ago and has had cancer twice.
Whoever we elect as president in November is almost certainly going to choose at least one and maybe more new members of the Supreme Court in addition to hundreds of other life-tenured federal judges, all of whom will be making momentous decisions about our lives for decades to come.
If you dont think it matters whether the guy making those calls is Mitt Romney or Barack Obama, I think youre smokin something funky .
So for anybody who is thinking of not voting because your favorite didnt get nominated, or writing in a candidate who can't win ... just imagine this possibility:
'SUPREME COURT JUSTICE ERIC HOLDER'
Did that get your attention!
Just looking at the election through the lens of SCOTUS, Romney is the bigger threat. Let me explain.
Unless they screw it up, the GOP-e should have 52-54 Senators at their disposal starting in 2013, enough to toss Obama nominees like Holder and Clinton (enough to demand at least a moderate pick or stonewall the position blank for years)
Imagine the politics of a recess appointment to the SCOTUS. Now, imagine a real opposition party with the stones to bump out that appointment session after session, leaving the position open in 2016. Of course, the GOP-e doesn’t want to play hardball; they want to go along, get along.
If the GOP-e doesn’t have what it takes to block liberal nominees, then the fault is theirs, BOTH for not having the stones to do what it takes to win, AND for not providing a reasonable alternative re: a SCOTUS picker.
Now, with Romney, the GOP-e cannot use that tactic. You have to dance with them what you brought to the dance. Romney cannot be persuaded by Conservative pressure like G.W. was. He’s a much a more committed liberal ideologue than that. Romney believes you all can go to hell. You’ll eat his shingle sandwich because you have no choice. Won’t you?
The chances of a more liberal pick for SCOTUS comes from Romney, UNLESS the GOP-e cops out. If they do, that’s not my fault, no matter how I vote for President.
I don’t know how I’m going to vote. I’m tired of being pressured into ‘a vote for anybody but Romney is a vote for Obama’. Horse Hockey.
I am, however, picking apart this particular argument. If SCOTUS is our lens, Romney is the wrong choice. If I’m going to be badgered about sucking up on Romney, at least use a decent argument. This one isn’t.
I know a guy at work that’s better than him.
Goode has no name recognition or national game plan.
I know a the local Cafe that talks a great game.
All We can doe is work from the roots up “Were the guy can actually win”
Virgil aint gonna even get mentioned outside of a small percentage of FR folks on the national stage.
I would wager 99$% of folks on FR dont even know his platform outside of “some guy on FR” told me he is a constitutionalist.
Heck Fred Thompson was a constitutionalist with name recognition and I backed him.
Didn’t work out so well.
Virgil Goode was not even on the primary Ballot in Tx.
Yup He’s gonna be a national contender /s
Heck I voted Ron Paul on the Texas primary JUST TO DENY ROMNEY delegates and force things toward Tampa.
I aint a Paulite, I did it to try to get things to Tampa.
Paul got 10% of the vote.
Lemme know when Virgil gets 11% anywhere.
Let me know when Virgil gets 2%
I voted Ted Cruz for senate here in Texas and we forced a run off.
I will vote Cruz again 7/31/12.
My Son voted Walker in his first election up in Wi (it was all him), I never coached him)
And I will vote Romney with a lot of folks, to hold his flop floppin feet to the fire.
Oh, and my Brothers in Ohio are all Kasich.
We are stacking **** against Obama and Romney.
We conservatives lost the primary. We need to get over it. The why we lost is meaningless. The question is; do we build on our Wisconsin win, or do we squander it in petty internecine crybaby bickering?
I see you have the same arrogant attitude that romney has. You insult and try to intimidate people and then you EXPECT people to vote for YOUR GUY; someone we see as socially equal to obama? Your the one whining that conservatives won't do what you want. I will be the one standing before God and having to explain why I voted for a pro abortion, pro gay & gay adoption liberal. I have never voted for one and I won't vote for one ever.
You call yourself a conservative? A conservative would NEVER vote for a person who thinks killing a baby up to 9 months in the womb is ok. To be honest with you, I'm wondering if you are one of the many mormons who were told to go out and sell romney on those who say they won't vote for him or are you anne coulter, matt drudge, Karl Rove? Am I getting close. Probably a paid internet blogger. Do you get commission for every vote you can get for romney? He bought the primary, why not continue the pattern and buy the general. You say you really don't like romney. Your forward attack on real conservatives says you are a romney tool trying to intimidate people into doing something they consider wrong.
A conservative would not push people to vote for a man who forced schools to indoctrinate children in the gay “lifestyle” over parents objections.
As governor, to please Massachusetts militant homosexual groups, Romney aggressively BOOSTED government funding for pro-homosexuality indoctrination, starting in kindergarten. He refused to defend schoolchildren and parents rights against this indoctrination. He refused to order his education officials to obey the law guaranteeing that parents can protect their children from sexual brainwashing. This is a continuation of his views since 1994 when he opposed congressional efforts to protect children by banning federal funding to public schools that encourage homosexuality as a positive lifestyle alternative. His deference to militant homosexual groups right to indoctrinate other peoples children was jaw-dropping:
Every general election is either the more-conservative candidate, or the more-liberal. So it is this year. Do you want the more-liberal candidate, or the more-conservative candidate? Those are the only two choices, and your actions will help elect one of them.
No, this year there are two big libs. Romney does not care an iota about conservatives. There is NOT a drop of conservative blood in romneys vains. Now why the hell would I vote for someone I would not let watch my dog for an hour? The people who voted for romney in the primary are the ones who gave us liberal romney and ultimately obama. I did not vote for either. Just because ignorant people voted for a liberal, does not mean I have to continue the idiotic pattern.
I thought votes, not talking elected people. I go to several blogs and people are starting to see who romney really is and are scared. Kinda like when people started finding out stuff about obama.
That is reality. The rest is crying over split milk. Period.
I am not crying; I just enjoy exposing romney for the liberal he is. I did not spill the milk and will not clean up someone else’s mess. I will tell you that romney is like spoiled milk and will smell quickly if he becomes president. You will see people with bumper stickers that say, “Don't blame me, I voted for the conservative. At least I can say, I had nothing to do with him. The eleftist in the gop and people like you gave us romney. I want nothing to do with him. He is socially equal to obama.
I think I come from a different angle on this issue. I am what some would call a ‘birther’. I believe our Constitution as stated by the Founders is quite clear, with historical records, and explicit as to eligibility for POTUSA. Obama does not pass through the eye of a needle test for this. I have spent much thought and time defending my view on this issue. If Romney chooses a VP candidate that is muddied up as to eligibility as is Obama I would have to choose between my clinging to my Constitutional first beliefs and the expediency of voting for Romney with reservations. I believe Romney has some undesirable political baggage but this baggage is nothing in comparison to Obama’s. I will wait and see how the scales of my decision balance out.
That sums it up very well, except for the part were You are doing all the crying.
“Therefore, to protect the Urban Feral habitats, we Must elect Romney.
It’s the highest insult, in a free country, to tell me who I “must” vote for.”
Do accept my apologies for omitting /sarc.
Get a mop Linda.
If Things go to a convention and Goode gets a decent margin And I would need to know more about his background, I would consider it, but I don’t see a percentage in this at this point.
STANDING OVATION!!! SoConPubbie is a person many people look up to. Someone who knows what is right and stands firm. I have been on FR for several years and KNOW SoConPubbie is a godly person (not to be confused with romney who thinks he is a god) When you insult SoConPubbie, you insult a lot of us. I hope when I read the remainer of the post, you have apologized to him.
