Bold Call: Microsoft To Pass Android, Grab No. 2 Spot In Tablets Behind Apple
Forbes ^ | 6/01/2012 | Brian Caulfield

Morgan Stanley analyst Kathryn Huberty upped her sales projections for the tablet computer market Thursday, and argued that Microsoft will grab the number two spot in the market, after Apple iPad and ahead of tablets running Google‘s Android software, with the launch of Windows 8 later this year.

Huberty and the tech team at Morgan Stanley are now estimating shipments of 133 million tablets in 2012, up 57% from their original estimates; and 216 million tablets in 2013, up 112%. No surprise there, tablet sales have been growing fast — despite high-profile stumbles by Hewlett-Packard and Dell — thanks to demand for Apple’s iPad tablet computer.

The bold call: Microsoft will grab a substantial chunk of the market with the introduction of Windows 8 later this year. “Our survey suggests 25% of users expect to buy Windows 8 tablet and Office is a key feature, especially for those considering their first tablet purchase,” Huberty and her team wrote in an analysis of the market released Thursday.

I have an iPad, using it right now, in fact. As soon as Win8 comes out, I’m selling this thing.

A tablet is only as good at the market it connects to.

Apple owns the #1 spot because the Apple App Store is 100 times better than the alternatives. Especially if you like free stuff.

As much as its going to tick off the anti-MS people to hear this, it really is isnt a bold call that is being made. It’s more of a duh.

Don't think your right. I have a new Nokia windows phone 8 cellphone and have been playing around with the beta release of windows 8 for PC and I think Microsoft has hit a triple and maybe a home run.

It sure beats android for ease of use and even my technology handicapped wife (who never could use android) took to the windows phone immediately.

Great satire, FRiend. LOL. iOS is so fantastic that I don’t even need and iPad. My iPhone 4GS is fantastic. If MS thinks they can beat Android and then catch up to iOS after that, they are sorely ignorant. iOS already has the first 6 spots of all phone/tablet shipments from March through May, and this will not change any time in the foreseeable future.

MS came out with the very first of these devices (a handheld about the size of an IPhone), way back in the 90s, and then they got scared and backed off. They even had an e-reader, but they never supported it and were never able to get publishers involved. I am an early-adopter type so I had one but they never even upgraded the earlier users to their second version, and they never got into the fact that consumers wanted good displays and readable text, so they never entered into agreements with publishers or made it easy or even possible to buy media.

That said, I had a Droid phone and got rid of it and bought an IPhone. The Droid just didn’t give me the connectivity, at least in part because while it was originally a very open system, Google started closing it up to “protect” its space, and things simply ceased to work well or even at all.

Apple was famous for its closed loop, so to speak, but I find that even Apple is making more of an effort to connect cross-platform. And it provides a lot more apps.

This could all change, but at the moment I’m happy with my IPhone, IPad, etc, although I have a Windows based PC which is my “home port.”

I don’t know exactly where Android/Google went wrong, but they did, and maybe MS will turn out to be the next rival to Apple once again.

They will if Apple has such a similar attitude.

My overall Microsoft experience is poor, and so many people have the same sort of very poor experience that i expect Win8 devices to get good penetration only where their use is compulsory and dictated; i.e., corporate issued devices.

I refuse to go to Win8 because the reality has never met the promise - from windows 1.0 to 3.0 to 3.11 to 98 to xp to that abortion that followed to win 7. I expect it to suck.

I am moving to all Apple OS and Android OS devices by end of year.

I’m in the market for a new cell phone in a few days. I was leaning Samsung Galaxy S II, but then I hear so much about Windows phones. HOWEVER, the dealbreaker for me on windows phones is that they are apparantly incapable of wifi calling (UMA) and I need that. My house is in a cell dead spot. So I think, issues aside, it will be Android and Samsung for me.

Really, The Win8 “tiles” is the ugliest GUI I’ve seen. I despise the GUI on the Windows Phone, and they are trying to standardize it to the desktop/tablet as well. Why?

You really like that interface - the mind boggles.

XP has been a solid operating system. Win 7 has similar reviews, though I have limited experience with it.

Laz - this post comes to you from a Galaxy S II on the AT&T network. Long time happy user. My daughter also picked it over the iPhone in part because she’s an independent type but she also loves it.

If you are an AT&T customer i recommend you check out their microcell. It’s a CISCO device that connects to you home internet an provides you with your own personal cell tower. You configure it for only the numbers you authorize so your neighbors can’t use it :-)

We put one in our cabin in NC where amazingly we get fast DSL from Frontier but no cell service. It works great.

Just curious. If ypu have already invested $500 or so in an ipad which seems to be pretty cool - why would you sell it for a different tablet? What don’t you like about the ipad?

I'm a T-Mobile guy.... my experiences with AT&T have not been happy ones.... but thanks for the S II 'seconded opinion'. Now I don't feel so apprehensive. I'm leaving the Blackberry universe after having been a loyal user of Blackberries for about 32 years.

Oh, ok. That was an exaggeration. More like since 2007.

I completely agree. I experience a physical reaction of revulsion when I see that damn tile setup, especially on the PC. IDK why I am so repelled by it, but I hate the look.
