DENTON, Texas The Stars and Stripes go hand-in-hand with Memorial Day. But when a truck driver saw a truck stop that wasn't flying the American flag, he took matters into his own hands.
He put up a American flag himself. The problem is, it didn't stay up for long.
David Ray Thornburg couldn't understand why the Travel Centers of America truck stop off Interstate 35 in Denton wasn't displaying Old Glory especially on Memorial Day.
So he grabbed his video camera and went to Walmart. The store donated a flag. Thornburg went back to the truck stop, climbed up the pole and put up the flag.
His YouTube video tells the rest of the story. He explains that just after he put the flag up, truck stop employees took it down.
Thornburg called it a slap in the face.

Still, I applaud the trucker for his act of civil disobedience. However, defending the Constitution means it has to apply to everyone.
Where is your link verifying that, and what would it have to do with this event of a Memorial day flying of a new flag?
From TA's President: On May 23, all of our location mgrs were reminded to fly the American flag on Memorial Day. We also distributed over 75,000 American flag decals to customers at our locations in recognition of veterans. Obviously, our franchisee-operated site in Denton, TX, failed to comply. For that, we sincerely apologize. Despite the dangers associated with a customer climbing a pole, we applaud the actions of the driver in reminding us of the sacrifices made by service men and women. If true, then it was the local manager who failed to put it up and then took it down. I would also point out that the end of the video where the flag is missing is at sundown. No excuse for it not being up in the first place but perhaps it was taken down because of sunset. This would be proper protocol. I would also note that there was no line on the pole. It is possible that the reason there was no flag in the first place was because the manager was too lazy to replace the line rather than a calculated disrespect. I would urge that all avoid rash judgment until all is known.TAPetro
Early model cell phone Good-Buddy.
Only problem, it was a party-line, no privacy.
And I have the right to spend money at any place I like.

Run a business. Try it. See if you don't get a visit from the bunny inspector.
Come nightfall, who's going to come take it down?
Were there any other businesses in the area who didn't even have a flagpole? Are they the focus of derision?
Unless I missed something the video appeared to show the flag down after sundown as it should be, unless it was illuminated. Did they take it down because of such flag protocol or otherwise? No one said.
That doesn’t excuse many businesses for not flying a flag at least on such holidays. Many do not do it for a variety of reasons from cost to the illumination required. Myself, I fly a 5 by 8 flag on a 32 ft flagpole but I don’t ridicule others who don’t. I salute the truck driver’s fortitude and initiative.
WRONG! Proper Freep protocol is to scream and shout, denounce whoever the media or youtube says to denounce and ignore any other options.
The anti-American jerk managing the store isn’t taking a stand for the constitution, he is making a political deliberately insulting protest statement against it, and against the nation, and it’s history.
This is all about private citizens using their constitutional rights calling out an anti-American act formally carried out by a business they frequent.
Let the constitutionally legal boycott begin, (if you two will allow protesting and boycotting from our side).
No, you provide evidence for your claim that you stated as a fact and the reason why that manager took such a dramatic anti-american, anti-customer action.
A smart man managing a store for patriotic American truck drivers does not go to such bizarre extremes to get in their face on Memorial Day.
It's about knee-jerks, not anti-American jerks.
He may not know anything about the constitution. How do you know he's making a political statement of any kind.
Some arsehole comes in and starts climbing a pole at a gas station? Really?
Say they called the cops. The cops come and arrest the guy for trespassing on private property, disturbing the peace, whatever and keep him from endangering himself. All Constitutional too. You ok with that?
So does he call the police to deal with it in your world? Just let the idiot crack his skull on the pavement? So he doesn't call the police and handles it quietly. Never mind! Get the manager fired! yay!
It's similar to a beeber, but larger.
It's a two way radio, works in the 27. mhz, 11 meter band, very effective for close in communication and in many cases, better than cell phones depending on the venue and they do not require cell towers to operate. In addition, unlike cell phones, they are free to use. Hundreds of thousands of truck drivers use them, among others.
That’s the Idea.
Truckstops of America do not have to fly a flag any more than I have to spend my money there, Which I won’t.
I heard about this story earlier today, and some ANGRY truckers said they will never stop there again. They tweeted this to a lot of their fellow truckers. That place will be shut in months.
There's no telling what the Fascist Police State has done to this business owner, regulatory or otherwise.
Are you drunk?
Any pole climbing was long over, it was done to install the rope.
Flag flying, rope installed, your claimed drama over, and they go out and run the flag down.
Well, the point is we don't know one way or another, but what the hell happened to private damn property?
Fly the flag or don't. If they had flown the flag upside down in distress I'd probably have agreed with them. The nation is in distress.
And the bigger issue is, I can't imagine how many fallen soldiers and sailors etc are spinning in their graves with the freedoms they fought for come to nearly naught.
