Are conservative Christians hypocritical and selective when it comes to the Bible’s condemnation of homosexuality? With all that the Bible condemns, why the focus on gay sex and same-sex marriage?

Given the heated nature of our current debates, it’s a question conservative Christians have learned to expect. “Look,” we are told, “the Bible condemns eating shellfish, wearing mixed fabrics and any number of other things. Why do you ignore those things and insist that the Bible must be obeyed when it comes to sex?”

Exactly, the other sins aren’t being shoved down our kids’ throats by government policy that says that we have to allow it or we’ll be penalized.

Yes they do.

They care about the homosexual vote, and, to get it, they'll pretend to care. Every "constituency" counts, and, it's all about the votes they can get.

Democrats are good at dividing and conquering, and thus, they divide people into groups, and then swoop in with their promises and giveaways to buy those votes.

It's all about the votes, and what it take to purchase them. Democrats don't care where the votes come from, as long as they can get enough of them to get people elected in order to implement their agenda.

Even above and beyond Christianity, homosexuality has always been recognized by most human societies for what it is - an unnatural and disgusting act.

The Ancient Romans looked down on the acceptance of homosxuality by some Greek societies as a symbol of their cultural degeneracy. Until that is, when that evil and filthy practise had infiltrated their own and even then, open homosexuality was often regarded with disdain or amusement. One of the statements made about Julies Caesar by his political opponents was “He was every woman’s man and every man’s woman.”

God wants us to be happy. Societies that countenance homosexuality cannot be happy. Hence the condemnation.

The comments are very interesting. You have the “You are God, God is you” guy, the “there has never been any proof that gays choose to be gay” (I must have missed all the proof of the “gay” gene that causes them to be homosexual in the first place) and the troll who says “gays spread AIDS and cancer more than anyone and need to be removed from the US”.

Homosexuality, along with all other sexual sins, are nearly unique in being specifically condemened by the New Testament as well as the Old. The first council of Jerusalem, asked to advise the first Greek (i.e. non-Jewish) converts) on Christian conduct, only constrained them to: 1. avoid dietary habits that were repellent to Jewish believers and 2. abstain from all sexual immorality. The Church correctly identified sexual sin as the most serious problem facing average believers in modern society.

I've heard that old chestnut so often I honestly wonder if those using it really do "hate the sin."

I once asked a relative "You hang so many qualifiers and caveats on the prohibition against homosexuality every time it's mentioned, I seriously wonder how you intend to teach your child there's actually anything wrong with the practice?"

Her answer: "I don't know that I will."

That told me all I needed to know about her sincerity.

In the book of Romans, St. Paul says that when we were still "enemies of God," Christ died for us. His love (and ours) is specifically directed toward those who are opposed to Him.

The person "opposed to God" should be the target of the Works of Mercy

• To instruct the ignorant;
• To counsel the doubtful;
• To admonish sinners;
• To pray for conversion of the offender

as well as to restrain their evildoing, to expose and counter their lies, to stop their aggression, to refuse them any cooperation, and to counteract their malice with goodness.

Some of us here were once those "deliberately opposed to God." That's exactly why the whole human race needed (and needs) a Savior.
