What a beatutiful tribute

Right from the prayers are done and said our last good-byes to the fact that I referred to Dad as the Old Man (when I sing along to "Streets of New York", I say "old man" instead of "old fellow" just out of habit).

In 1965, Martha & the Vandellas picked up another effort from Holland, Dozier and Holland and got another hit.

Holland, Dozier and Holland spent 1965 trying to get the Four Tops into the same position that the Supremes occupied. The first entry for that year missed the Top 10 but showed some promise.

The Four Tops: “Something About You”

Then the guys rang the cash register. If you follow the chord pattern, you’ll recognize that they’re the same chords as “Where Did Our Love Go”, which is why I always referred to this song as “Where Did Our Love Go With Different Lyrics”. Still, it made it all the way to #1 and gave the Four Tops their first real hit.

The Four Tops: “I Can’t Help Myself”

The guys followed that up with the same thing, simply writing new lyrics to the same basic chord pattern and getting a second huge hit. They even kidded Gordy about it by giving it this title. Note that there is a flub in the recording at 1:51. The line reads, “But this memory keeps lingering on.” Stubbs sings, “But this memory keep ring-a-ling on.” After one too many takes, the producers decided to leave it in.

The Four Tops: “It’s the Same Old Song”

One song from Holland, Dozier and Holland that didn’t quite make it into the Top 10 was this classic from 1965. Eddie Holland wrote the vocal track first, and it was originally intended for Martha Reeves. The single release was quite adequate, but this alternate track is amazing. Catch Benny Benjamin’s drum work.

In 1966, Holland, Dozier and Holland provided another hit for Martha Reeves. This dramatic song tells its story very well. At 1:50 there is an unconscionably sloppy edit that mars the recording.

In 1966, the team of Holland, Dozier and Holland tried to find a new groove for the Four Tops. This failed to make the Top 10 and returned to the groove of “Something About You”.

The Four Tops: “Shake Me, Wake Me”

Perhaps Berry Gordy gave them a dirty look in the hall after that one. The guys needed to find a new groove for the Four Tops without reverting to the same old song. In the late summer of ‘66, they hit the jackpot. Those are Arabic harmonies and melodies, and the vocal approach of Levi Stubbs was black Bob Dylan. This was something new for Motown and the guys, and it was Motown’s biggest hit to date.

The Four Tops: “Reach Out I’ll be There”

What came next sold well but has to be considered an embarrassment for the guys. It’s their last hit with different lyrics.

The Four Tops: “Standing in the Shadows of Love”
